This commentary provides a synthetic overview and analytic framework for understanding the papers in this volume of The ANNALS, which focuses on sharing networks in a comparative context. Economic crises endemic to capitalist societies generate the need for support networks, while welfare state configurations influence their importance as an additional survival tool. Social norms set the stage for the degrees of reciprocity and durable obligation that networks engender and the boundary conditions that enable or disable the most vulnerable members of the social hierarchy to tap the resources of more privileged contacts.

Patriarchy and the Social Construction of Femininity In the Novel Love in the Times of CholeraAbstract: This article analyzes a female character (FerminaDaza) in the García Márquez novel Love in theTimes of Cholera. She appears tied to certain socio-culturalvalues imposed by the patriarchal heritage. Nevertheless, she is able to throw off the shackles of oppressivepower in an ineluctable need for women to transcendtheir condition, as she seeks to consolidate her identity, her ideology and her dominant otherness. The centralidea revolves around the social construction of femininitylinked to a patriarchy that opposes any female intellectualpowers, at the beginning of the twentieth centurywhen marriage was the only alternative for women. Thearticle also proposes to show the presence of an incipientfeminism in the novel opposed to patriarchal dominationat the time, when woman was considered a decorativeobject, a kitchen drudge and someone to raise the children;any other domain of open space outside the homewas tacitly forbidden. The issue of motherhood as sourceof identity, idiosyncratically assumed by Fermina, is analyzed,as well as the slight importance given to it by thenarrator, who merely uses it to show the conventions ofthose times. Keywords: patriarchy, literature, feminism, GarcíaMárquez, Love in the Times of Cholera

This article considers the construction of the profilers and criminals in Thomas Harris’ (2013) [1988] novel Silence of the Lambs through the analysis of selected indicative criminal mind-related extracts. The aim is to consider such characters’ construction through analysis of schematic incongruity, conversational power play, language depicting the actual fictional criminal viewpoint and, lastly, psychological profiling language, the style of which has criminal mind style ‘potential’. Schematic incongruity has a role to play in generating impressions of both the normality and abnormality of psychological profilers and the killers they pursue. Serial killers are constructed as not only physically/psychologically ‘abnormal’ but also as ‘abnormals’ amongst other ‘abnormals’ in terms of their conversational patterns, too. Where some criminals’ apparent reluctance, or inability, to accord to conversational norms marks them as uncivilised, killer/profiler Lecter’s mostly conventional conversational politeness marks him out as indirectly mocking the social norms he sometimes chooses to accord to. Where killer Gumb is concerned, profiling language and language depicting his criminal viewpoint draws on metaphors and references to killing being likened to hunting, work and art, suggesting that killing is necessary, commendable and ceremonial, the victims’ mere things to be utilised in a venture that can only be described as worthy. Though Lecter is shown to be ‘born’ into deviant behaviour, and Gumb is suggested to have been ‘made’ into a criminal, the novel undoubtedly suggests connections, similarities even, between both such character types’ extreme criminal behaviour and those wanting to understand ‘criminal minds’ through the profiling practice.

The main objectives of this research are to explore how four major characters negotiate the desire of their lives with the patriarchy and social norms that they should obey. This study employs qualitative research method with a cultural approach using the technique of library research. The text is analyzed by using identity theory by Stuart Hall to interpret how women reach their freedom in life. This study not only analyzes the characters of women who wear a burkha but also analyzes all of the four major characters in this film because the main point of this film is about women's dream that cannot be conveyed. The result shows that the four women characters in this film are trying to reach their dream; freedom for woman. Freedom to dress as she wishes refers to Rehana, a freedom to be loved refers to Shireen, freedom to choose a life partner refers to Leela and freedom to do what they want refers to Usha. The attitude and behavior of the four major characters in this film are limited by the patriarchy (manpower) and the social norms. The patriarchy in this film refers to Rehana and Shireen’s life because there are men power represented by the father figure in Rehana’s life and husband figure in Shireen's life. Then, the social norms appear in Leela and Usha’s lifeasboth of them do immoral acts and make them feel ashame.
