AIM: The aim of the study was to compare the retention of two modalities: Multi-suction cup denture, and denture adhesive and to evaluate the change of retention by different time intervals. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twelve completely edentulous patients were selected. The patients received two dentures: One conventional denture, and the other with multi-suction cups. The retention was measured by a universal testing machine at insertion, 15 min, 30 min, 1 h, 2 h, and 4 h. All values were recorded in Newtons. Statistical analysis was carried out using two-way analysis of variance with post hoc Tukey’s test. RESULTS: Retention was higher in denture adhesive than multi-suction cup, and the change of retention was not statistically significant by time. CONCLUSION: Denture adhesive showed better retention clinically and simplified laboratory procedures than multi-suction denture.

Aim: The tear strength of three different types of elastomeric impression materials was measured after disinfection and sterilization. Material and Method: Dumb-bell shaped Tear strength specimens were prepared according to ISO 34-1 standardization. Ninety samples were prepared followed by disinfection and sterilization and tested with trouser piece method on Instron universal testing machine at a speed of 10 mm/min. One-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey post hoc test was used for statistical analysis. Results: No signicant difference was found when AFFINIS, SPEEDEX and AQUASIL were compared individually. When materials were compared with each other signicant difference was present, highest AQUASIL while SPEEDEX and AFFINIS almost alike. Conclusion: It was concluded that tear strength of AQUASIL was the highest. Disinfection and autoclaving had no signicant inuence on the three materials and showed adequate tear strength.

Objective: to measure pH values of bleaching agents that are indicated to intracoronal bleaching technique in different time intervals. Methods: Each group (G) received five samples (n=5): G1 – distilled water (AD); G2 – hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) 30%; G3 – sodium perborate (PbS) + AD; G4 – PbS + H2O2 30%; G5 – sodium percarbonate (PcS) + AD; and G6 – PcS + H2O2 30%. pH values were stated using a digital pHmeter, in different time intervals: immediately after handling (T0), 24 hours (T1) and 168 hours after handling (T2). The results were submitted to statistical analysis through Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney tests, in this order, allowing multiple comparisons among the groups. To verify the effect of time in each group, Friedman test was applied. Results: In the evaluation of the effect of time in each group, it was observed that G2 presented acid behavior, while the other groups exhibited values close to neutrality or alkaline. Conclusions: H2O2 30% was the only agent that showed acidic behavior in every evaluation time. Meanwhile, PcS + H2O had the highest pH values.

Objectives: This study was made to detect the effect of accelerating aging on retention and measuring the release period of clips in a 2 and 3 bar retained maxillary implant overdenture. Materials and Methods: Four implants were placed in two maxillary edentulous epoxy models. One model had two bar attachments with two clips overdenture while the other model had three bar attachments with three clips in the overdenture. Retention and release period of the clips were checked before applying insertion removal cycles. Retention was measured using universal testing machine after 540 cycles (6 months) and 1080 cycles (1 year) of insertion removal on a chewing simulator.Results and Conclusions: There was a significant difference in retention and release period between two bars and three bars implant retained maxillary overdentures. A significant difference was also seen in each group after accelerated aging. Therefore, the three bar implant retained overdenture had higher retention values than two bar. Retention loss occurred in both groups after the insertion removal cycles. Release period value was lower in two bar overdenture than three bar overdenture.

This study evaluated the bond strength (push-out method) and Knoop hardness of Z250 composite resin, photoactivated with XL 2500 curing unit, using different protocols: continuous mode (700mW/cm² for 20s) (CO); soft-start (50 mW/cm² for 5 s, followed by 700 mW/cm² for 15 s) (SS1); soft-start (100 mW/cm² for 5 s, followed by 700 mW/cm² for 15 s) (SS2); soft-start (150 mW/cm² for 5 s, followed by 700mW/cm² for 15s) (SS3); soft-start (200mW/cm² for 5s, followed by 700mW/cm² for 15s) (SS4); soft-start (250mW/cm² for 5 s, followed by 700 mW/cm² for 15 s) (SS5); soft-start (300 mW/cm² for 5 s, followed by 700 mW/cm² for 15 s) (SS6). For the push-out test, the specimens were tested in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. For the hardness test, the specimens were polished for the hardness measurements, using a 50 g load for 15 s. Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha=5%). The results of bond strength showed that the SS3 group obtained the highest bond strength when compared to the CO group. There were no significant differences among the other modes in relation to the other groups. Regarding the other results in hardness, there were no significant differences among the groups in the surface region and up to 4 mm depth.

SUMMARY The objective of this project was to study the influence of artificial aging and surface treatment on the microtensile bond strengths (μTBS) between zirconia and a phosphate monomer–based self-adhesive cement. Thirty zirconia disks (IPS e.max ZirCAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) were randomly assigned to two aging regimens: AR, used as received, which served as a control, and AG, artificial aging to simulate low-temperature degradation. Subsequently, the disks of each aging regimen were assigned to three surface treatments: NT, no surface treatment; CO, surface silicatization with CoJet sand (3M ESPE); and ZP, zirconia surface treated with Z-Prime Plus (Bisco Inc). Thirty discs were made of Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE) composite resin and luted to the zirconia discs using RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE). The specimens were sectioned with a diamond blade in X and Y directions to obtain bonded beams with a cross-section of 1.0 ± 0.2 mm. The beams were tested in tensile mode in a universal testing machine at a speed of 0.5 mm/min to measure μTBS. Selected beams were selected for fractographic analysis under the SEM. Statistical analysis was carried out with two-way analysis of variance and Dunnett T3 post hoc test at a significance level of 95%. The mean μTBS for the three AR subgroups (AR-NT, AR-CO, and AR-ZP) were significantly higher than those of the corresponding AG groups (p<0.0001). Both AR-CO and AR-ZP resulted in statistically significant higher mean bond strengths than the group AR-NT (p<0.006 and p<0.0001, respectively). Both AG-CO and AG-ZP resulted in statistically significant higher mean bond strengths than the group AG-NT (both at p<0.0001). Overall, AG decreased mean μTBS. Under the SEM, mixed failures showed residual cement attached to the zirconia side of the beams. CO resulted in a characteristic roughness of the zirconia surface. AR-ZP was the only group for which the amount of residual cement occupied at least 50% of the interface in mixed failures.

UsingTCP(TransmissionControlProtocol)inwirelessnetworkscanaffectitsperformanceduetoits lack of ability to identify packets losses properly, causing the triggering of its congestion control mechanism. Some TCP variants were proposed to improve this control, being TCP-UEM one of them. This variant allows the evaluation of the link reliability in wireless networks in time intervals, keeping the end-to-end semantics. TCP-UEM was implemented in FreeBSD OS and its performance with relation to segment transfer rate (in Mbps) was compared to two other variants, TCP-NEWRENO and TCP-CUBIC. This paper describes TCP-UEM, discusses results of the tests and the statistical analysis that were carried out using two scenarios. For each scenario, 30 samples of 30 seconds of execution time with different loss rates were collected. The results showed that TCP-UEM presented a good performance, achieving a performance higher than the other two variants in the majority of the tests, with different loss rates.

Resin akrilik merupakan bahan yang sering digunakan dalam pembuatan basis gigi tiruan. Kelemahan resin akrilik adalah mudah patah. Salah satu cara untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut adalah dengan menambahkan polyethylene (PE) atau glass fiber. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh jenis dan volumetrik fiber terhadap kekuatan transversal reparasi plat resin akrilik. Penelitian ini menggunakan dua puluh lima plat resin akrilik kuring panas berukuran 65 x 10 x 2,5 mm. Subjek dipreparasi untuk membuat jarak 3 mm dan sudut bevel 45o. Subjek dibagi menjadi 5 kelompok, masingmasing kelompok terdiri dari 5 subjek. Kelompok 1 (kontrol) tanpa penambahan fiber, kelompok II dengan penambahan 3,7% v/v PE fiber, kelompok III dengan penambahan 7,4% v/v PE fiber, kelompok IV dengan penambahan 3,7% v/v E-glass fiber, dan kelompok V dengan penambahan 7,4% v/v E-glass fiber. Seluruh plat direndam dalam air destilasi selama satu hari pada suhu 37oC. Pengujian kekuatan transversal plat resin akrilik dengan menggunakan Universal Testing Machine dan data yang didapat dianalisis menggunakan ANAVA dua jalur dengan tingkat kepercayaan 95%. Rerata kekuatan transversal (MPa) reparasi plat resin akrilik yang diperkuat fiber: 3,7% v/v PE fiber (67,77±3,34); 7,4% v/v PE fiber (80,37±8,42); 3,7% v/v E-glass fiber (96,72±5,43); 7,4% v/v E-glass fiber (109,44±4,98); sedangkan reparasi plat resin yang tidak diperkuat fiber menghasilkan kekuatan transversal 56,27±4,7 MPa. Hasil analisis menggunakanANAVA dua jalur menunjukkan variabel jenis dan volumetrik fiber memberikan pengaruh signifikan (p<0,05), sedangkan interaksi antara jenis dan volumetrik fiber tidak berpengaruh signifikan (p>0,05). Uji post hoc Tukey menunjukkan perbedaan signifikan (p<0,05) untuk seluruh kelompok perlakuan. Penambahan E-glass fiber dalam reparasi plat resinakrilik mampu meningkatkan kekuatan transversal lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan menggunakan PE fiber. Peningkatan volumetrik fiber dapat meningkatkan kekuatan transversal reparasi plat resin akrilik. Effect Of Type And Volumetric Fiber On Transverse Strength Of Acrylic Resin Plate Repair. Acrylic resin is the most common denture base material. A disadvantage of acrylic resin is that it is easily fractured. One way to resolve this problem is by adding polyethylene (PE) or glass fibers. The purpose of this research is to find out about the effect of type and volumetric fiber on transverse strength of acrylic resin plate repaired. The experiment involved twenty five plates of heat cured acrylic with the dimensions of 65 x 10 x 2.5 mm. The speciments were prepared to create a 3 mm gap and 45° bevel. The subjects were divided into 5 groups; each group consisted of 5. Group I (control) was without fiber reinforcement, group II reinforced with 3.7% v/v PE fiber, group III reinforced with 7.4% v/v PE fiber, group IV reinforced with 3.7% v/v E-glass fiber, and group V reinforced with 7.4% v/v E-glass fiber. All plates were soaked in distilled water for one day at 37° C temperature. The plates were tested for transverse strength with Universal Testing Machine and all data obtained were analyzed with two way ANOVA at 95% confidence level. The mean of transverse strength (MPa) of the acrylic resin plate repair reinforced with fiber: 3.7% v/v PE fiber was (67.77±3.34); 7.4% v/v PE fiber (80.37±8.42); 3.7% v/v E-glass fiber (96.72±5.43); 7.4% v/v E-glass fiber (109.44±4.98); while the transverse strength of the acrylic resin plate with no fiber reinforced was 56.27±4.7 MPa. Two way ANOVA analysis shows that type and volumetric fiber had significant effect (p<0.05), while the interaction between type and volumetric fiber had no significant effect (p>0.05). Tukey post hoc test shows significant difference (p<0.05) for all groups. The addition of E-glass fibers in the acrylic resin plate repaired increased the transverse strength higher than that with PE fibers. The increase in volumetric fibers might improve the transverse strength of the acrylic resin plate repaired.

Abstract Objective: To test the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the shear bond strength (SBS) and Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) scores of new vs reconditioned self-ligating brackets. Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty permanent extracted bovine teeth were embedded in resin blocks. Three different new and reconditioned self-ligating orthodontic brackets (Smart Clip [3M Unitek]; Quick [Forestadent]; and Damon3MX [Ormco]) were tested. Scanning electron microphotographs of the different new (groups 1, 3, and 5) and reconditioned (groups 2, 4, and 6) bracket bases were taken before starting the experiments. Brackets were then bonded to the teeth using an orthodontic adhesive and were then tested in shear mode using an Instron Universal Testing Machine. ARI scores were then recorded. Statistical analysis was performed to determine significant differences in SBS and ARI Scores. Results: Smart Clip and Damon3MX reconditioned brackets showed significantly lower SBS than did new ones. On the contrary, Quick reconditioned brackets showed significantly higher SBS than did new ones. No significant differences in ARI scores were found after the reconditioning process for the three different brackets tested. Conclusion: The in-office reconditioning procedure alters the SBS of self-ligating brackets, although SBS values still remain clinically acceptable.

In this laboratory study shear bond strengths of three filled and one unfilled adhesive systems to enamel and dentine were compared. Forty-eight extracted intact noncarious human mandibular molars were randomly assigned to two groups of 24 one for bonding to enamel and the other for bonding to dentine. Buccal and lingual surfaces of each tooth were randomly assigned for application of each one of filled (Prime & Bond NT (PBNT), Optibond Solo Plus (OBSP), and Clearfil SE Bond (CSEB)) and unfilled (Single Bond (SB)) adhesive systems (n=12). A universal resin composite was placed into the translucent plastic cylinders (3 mm in diameter and 2 mm in length) and seated against the enamel and dentine surfaces and polymerized for 40 seconds. Shear bond strength was determined using a universal testing machine, and the results were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA, one-way ANOVA,t-test, and Tukey HSD post hoc test with a 5% level of significance.There were no statistically significant differences in bond strength between the adhesive systems in enamel, but CSEB and SB exhibited significantly higher and lower bond strength to dentine, respectively, than the other tested adhesive systems while there were no statistically significant differences between PBNT and OBSP.

The hypothesis tested in this study was that intraoral exposure of elastomeric chains alters their tensile strength. For such purpose, it was evaluated the in situ behavior of different elastomeric chains stretched for 3 weeks. Three kinds of elastomeric chains, Plastic chain (PC), Memory chain (MC) and Super slick chain (SSC), were randomly placed in 3 quadrants of 13 patient in a fixed distance of 16 mm and mean initial force of 180 g. Tensile testing was performed in an universal testing machine at different intervals: initial, 1 h, 24 h, 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks. A two-way ANOVA test was performed to identify the influence of both material and time on the force decrease. A subsequent one-way ANOVAtest with the Tukey's post hoc test was used to identify statistically significant intragroup and intergroup remaining force (g and %) differences at 5% significance level. The effect of both the material and the time factors were significant. All groups showed significant force decrease after the 1-h period (23% for PC and 14% for MC and SSC). At the end of the 3-week period, the remaining force was 57% (96 g), 67% (129 g) and 71% (125 g) for PC, MC and SSC, respectively. In conclusion, intraoral exposure of elastomeric chains altered their tensile strength. In general, the greater force decrease occurred within the first hour. The remaining force of the enhanced chains measured at each time interval was greater than the conventional one (PC). After 3 weeks, only the enhanced chains maintained the force applied over 100 g.
