This chapter presents the preliminary findings of a qualitative study exploring people’s information experiences during the 2012 Queensland State election in Australia. Six residents of South East Queensland who were eligible to vote in the state election participated in a semi-structured interview. The interviews revealed five themes that depict participants’ information experience during the election: information sources, information flow, personal politics, party politics, and sense making. Together these themes represent what is experienced as information, how information is experienced, as well as contextual aspects that were unique to voting in an election. The study outlined here is one in an emerging area of enquiry that has explored information experience as a research object. This study has revealed that people’s information experiences are rich, complex, and dynamic, and that information experience as a construct of scholarly inquiry provides deep insights into the ways in which people relate to their information worlds. More studies exploring information experience within different contexts are needed to help develop our theoretical understanding of this important and emerging construct.

Objetivo: O objetivo desse estudo foi de identificar as dificuldades do profissional enfermeiro frente à criança com câncer, verificar se há preparo adequado para atender às necessidades de uma criança com doenças oncológicas; e qual a forma de enfrentamento utilizada pelo profissional diante das dificuldades encontradas, no atendimento a essa criança. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, objetivando identificar quais dificuldades o profissional de enfermagem enfrenta no cuidado de criança com câncer e de seus familiares, os mecanismos de enfrentamento dessas dificuldades no atendimento dos mesmos e se há preparo adequado dos mesmos para atender as necessidades dessas crianças. Os sujeitos foram quatro enfermeiras que cuidam ou já cuidaram de crianças com câncer no Hospital Bom Pastor – Varginha/MG. A coleta de dados foi desenvolvida por uma entrevista semiestruturada. Resultados: Constatou-se que as dificuldades são: cuidar de criança em estado grave, seus pais e o envolvimento emocional. Aos meios de enfrentamento referem à oração e a distração. Quanto ao preparo do profissional referem despreparo para atuar nesta área. Conclusão: Conclui-se que há falta de preparo aos profissionais, embora os mesmos cuidem com humanização dessas crianças.  Palavras-chave: Enfermeiro; Crianças; Câncer.   ABSTRACT: Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the difficulties of the professional nurse when taking care of a child with cancer, check the adequate preparation to meet the needs of children with oncological diseases; and what form of coping with the situation the professionals used when taking care of this child. Methodology: This was a qualitative study , aiming to identify the difficulties the professional faces in the care of children with cancer and their families , the coping mechanisms of these difficulties in the care  and if there is adequate preparation thereof to meet the needs of these children. The subjects were four nurses who care or have cared for children with cancer at Good Shepherd Hospital – Varginha/MG. Data collection was carried out by a semi - structured interview. Results: It was found that the difficulties are care of a child in serious condition, his parents and the emotional involvement. Means of coping relate to prayer and distraction. As to their preparation, professionals refer as being unprepared to act in this area. Conclusion: We concluded that there is lack of preparation of professionals, although they take care of these children in a humanistic way  Keywords: Nurse; children; Cancer.

This article aimed to analyze, through a qualitative study (i.e., semi-structured interview), the opinions and knowledge of fourth-year future teachers at a Spanish public university (University of Granada) regarding training and the need for first aid (FA) at school. With a sample of 70 subjects in their last year of training, our conclusion is that although they are aware of the importance of first aid for their professional development, there is no such training in their careers, and thus they have great difficulty understanding how to react to emergency situations on the job.

AbstractResearch on mathematical problem solving has a long tradition: retracing its fascinating story sheds light on its intricacies and, therefore, on its needs. When we analyze this impressive literature, a critical issue emerges clearly, namely, the presence of words and expressions having many and sometimes opposite meanings. Significant examples are the terms ‘realistic’ and ‘modeling’ associated with word problems in school. Understanding how these terms are used is important in research, because this issue relates to the design of several studies and to the interpretation of a large number of phenomena, such as the well-known phenomenon of students’ suspension of sense making when they solve mathematical problems. In order to deepen our understanding of this phenomenon, we describe a large empirical and qualitative study focused on the effects of variations in the presentation (text, picture, format) of word problems on students’ approaches to these problems. The results of our study show that the phenomenon of suspension of sense making is more precisely a phenomenon of activation of alternative kinds of sense making: the different kinds of active sense making appear to be strongly affected by the presentation of the word problem.

The aim of this study was to gain insight on the views of Hindi-speaking mothers on readily available English language oral health education materials and to evaluate the acceptability of Hindi language adapted versions of these materials. This qualitative study is nested within an ongoing multi-centre birth cohort study in Greater Western Sydney, Australia. Following purposive selection of Hindi-speaking mothers (n = 19), a semi-structured interview was conducted. Two English leaflets were mailed to participants prior to the interview. The simplified English and translated Hindi versions of the leaflets were provided at the interview, and the participants were asked to compare and evaluate all three versions. Interviews were audio recorded, and thematic analysis was used to analyse data from interview transcripts. A majority of the participants reported a certain degree of difficulty in reading and comprehending oral health messages in Hindi. Although Hindi translations were accurate, mothers preferred the simplified English as opposed to the Hindi version. Visual illustrations and a simple layout facilitated the understanding of oral health messages. Developers of oral health education leaflets should thoroughly research their prospective user groups, particularly migrant populations, and identify the need for simplified or translated oral health education leaflets.

Nowadays, direct taxation of personal income is used in almost all countries of the world, and to this day there are various changes that shift the share of revenue from these taxes towards increasing the state budget. The significance of the personal income tax in economic policy is also due to the fact that it affects the interests of almost the entire population of the country. A variety of disputes constantly arise around the personal income tax, which can be explained by a wide range of taxpayers in various social strata. The ongoing transformations in the tax area predetermine the construction of the individuals taxation fair system as the fulfillment of one of the conditions for improving the living standards of the population. The relevance of the study lies in the need to reform the tax system in Russia, namely, the taxation of personal income, in order to implement the principle of social justice, as well as to satisfy the fiscal component of this tax, respectively, to fulfill the interests of participants in tax relations. The purpose of the article is a theoretical understanding of the conceptual directions of the taxation theories development through the prism of realizing the interests of the state and taxpayers in the taxation system of personal income. The subject of this research is the set of economic relations between the state and individuals, formed in the process of taxation of personal income in Russia. The methodological basis was the conceptual provisions of the theories of taxation, scientific methods and methods of analysis. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that the results of the methodological analysis of the taxation theories development through the prism of realizing the state interests and taxpayers will make it possible to solve from a theoretical point of view the issue of interests balance achieving of all parties, which will contribute to the development of practical measures to achieve a decent standard of living for the population.

The aim of this article is to analyze the fears about menstruation and health that have been passed down to us by oral transmission from a gender perspective. A qualitative study, whose design was the Grounded Theory, performed in Seville, Spain, with 24 rural and urban women from different generations, young (18-25, 26-35 years), middle aged (36-45, 46-55, 56-65 years) and elderly (> 65 years). The semi-structured interview was used as a data collection technique. The discourses were subjected to content analysis, following the steps of Grounded Theory. The results highlight the abundant fears related to use of water during menstruation, with very harmful effects to health. As a conclusion to highlight the lack of women's knowledge about reproductive health and that despite Health Education campaigns there are still ancient misconceptions present about menstruation.

In this qualitative study, we evaluated parents’ and facilitators’ experiences of the Group Stepping Stones Triple P (GSSTP) programme for parents of children with disabilities. The study was embedded in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of GSSTP and carried out in the Irish public health service. Eight parents and three psychologists participated in the study. We used a semi-structured interview schedule to collect data and conducted a thematic content analysis of interview transcripts to identify particularly useful and less helpful aspects of the programme and ways that its future delivery may be improved. We conducted separate analyses on parent and psychologist data. The main findings were that parents considered the GSSTP to have helped them develop better self-regulation and behaviour management skills, which contributed to improved family relations. Negative aspects of the programme included the use of dated videos, the volume of programme content, the attrition rate and the shortcomings of the programme in meeting the complex needs of vulnerable families. Improvement suggestions included increasing flexibility of manualised content, providing follow-up support to vulnerable parents, incentivizing parents to attend and updating videos.

Purpose Stuttering behaviors and moments of stuttering are typically defined by what a listener perceives. This study evaluated participants' perceptions of their own experience of moments of stuttering. Method Thirteen adults who stutter participated in a phenomenological qualitative study examining their experience of moments of stuttering. Analysis yielded several common themes and subthemes culminating in an essential structure describing the shared experience. Results Speakers experience anticipation and react in action and nonaction ways. Many speakers experience a loss of control that relates to a lack of a well-formed speech plan or agency. The experience of moments of stuttering changes through therapy, over time, with self-help, and across situations. Many speakers experience so-called typical stuttering behaviors as reactions rather than direct consequences of trying to speak. Interactions with listeners can affect the experience of stuttering. Conclusion Although research recognizes that the experience of the stuttering disorder involves more than just speech behaviors, people who stutter experience stuttering behaviors in time as involving more than just the disruption in speech. This finding has implications for both the theoretical understanding of stuttering and the clinical evaluation and treatment of the stuttering disorder.

Stillbirth, the loss of a baby during pregnancy or childbirth, is one of the most devastating losses a parent can experience. The experience of stillbirth is associated with trauma and intense grief, but mothers’ belief systems can be protective against the impacts of grief. Women in Nigeria endure a high burden of stillbirth and the aim in this study was to describe the beliefs and strategies for coping with stillbirth. Twenty mothers bereaved by stillbirth in Nigeria were interviewed; seven of them also participated in a focus group. The findings of the study revealed that the experience of stillbirth was influenced by beliefs which originated from superstitions, religion, and social expectations. These beliefs played significant roles in how mothers coped with the loss, by providing them with a framework for sense-making and benefit-finding.

Objective: The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify perceptions and barriers to physical activity in childhood and adulthood among Latina adults. Methods: We conducted 3 focus groups, 2 dyadic interviews, and an individual interview using semi-structured interview guides with 23 Latina women aged 21-35. A thematic analysis approach employing inductive and deductive coding was utilized to code, categorize, and summarize data into themes. Results: The themes that emerged focused on: (1) physical activity is enjoyable; (2) family influenced physical activity; (3) different lifestyle in the US influenced physical activity; (4) physical activity is important for health; and (5) responsibilities (eg, work, caregiving) as barriers to physical activity in adulthood. Conclusions: Perceptions and barriers to physical activity experienced in both childhood and adulthood should be considered in the promotion of physical activity among Latinas.
