The Entrepreneur as Strategist and Improviser

The chapter deals with the search for relevant strategic responses to the challenges of a dynamic and competitive, international and multicultural business environment where new strategic approaches like Strategic Entrepreneurship (SE) and tools to meet the specific characteristics and needs of SMEs are launched. The entrepreneurial opportunities, and their exploration and exploitation through the entrepreneur's/ manager's various roles as a strategist, leader, and improviser, are analyzed. It is shown that in most cases the entrepreneur (especially in long-term dynamic, ambiguous conditions) acts without sufficient formal information and resources and therefore has to improvise taking certain risks (strategic improviser). Difficulties in the understanding and the implementation of entrepreneurial roles, especially those of strategist and improviser, require non-traditional approaches, forms and methods in the education of students in entrepreneurship, and in training/ consulting for both new and established entrepreneurs. The forms and methods of mythology, metaphorical representation and jargon, as tools of the so-called subjective (qualitative) approach, are widely accepted. The chapter employs examples of original myths and metaphors to demonstrate how better to understand the linkages across strategic orientation/ management, improvisation and strategic learning, thus helping entrepreneurs/ managers to better adapt theories, concepts and tools for effective working in a dynamic, competitive environment.

As empresas florestais estão vinculadas a inúmeros outros setores da economia e têm a necessidade de um alinhamento estratégico que aufira um posicionamento competitivo tempo a tempo na busca do sucesso frente às incertezas do ambiente. Não obstante, o ciclo produtivo de longo prazo, na atividade florestal, determina a necessidade de preparo para enfrentar as oscilações do ambiente de negócios, o que exige a decisão orientada por estratégia bem definida para garantir a competitividade. O desenvolvimento desta pesquisa objetivou a análise da orientação estratégica das empresas florestais, com base nas estratégias genéricas de Porter (1980). Para tanto, foi aplicado o método de pesquisa qualitativa exploratória, complementada por métodos analíticos com a análise multivariada, através da análise fatorial e análise de agrupamentos (“cluster”). Os resultados indicaram que o alinhamento estratégico identificado para o grupamento de empresas participantes, representativas do setor florestal, é em uma estratégia híbrida composta pela estratégica genérica da diferenciação com uma tênue combinação com a estratégia genérica do foco.Palavras-chave: Competitividade; estratégias genéricas; negócio florestal; análise fatorial. AbstractIdentification of a strategic orientation of Brazilian forestry company - an application of Porter’s Theory. Forestry companies are bonded to several sectors of economy and need strategic alignment for their competitive positioning at the ready in order to establish successful results due to environment uncertainty. Nevertheless, the long term productive cycle, in forest activity, determines the necessity of being prepared to face business environment difficulties, which demands oriented decision to a well-defined strategy for competitiveness guarantee. This research aimed to analyze strategic orientation of forest companies, based on Porter (1980) generic strategies. For so much, it was applied the method of exploratory quantitative research complemented by analytic methods with multi-variable analysis, by the factorial and cluster analysis. The results indicated that, for the group of participant companies, as representatives ones for forestry sector, the identified strategic alignment is a hybrid strategy composed by generic strategy of differentiation tenuously combined with generic strategy of focus. Abstract. Assessing change during long-term psychotherapy can be a challenging and uncertain task. Psychological assessments can be a valuable tool and can offer a perspective from outside the therapy dyad, independent of the powerful and distorting influences of transference and countertransference. Subtle structural changes that may not yet have manifested behaviorally can also be assessed. However, it can be difficult to find a balance between a rigorous, systematic approach to data, while also allowing for the richness of the patient’s internal world to emerge. In this article, the authors discuss a primarily qualitative approach to the data and demonstrate the ways in which this kind of approach can deepen the understanding of the more subtle or complex changes a particular patient is undergoing while in treatment, as well as provide more detail about the nature of an individual’s internal world. The authors also outline several developmental frameworks that focus on the ways a patient constructs their reality and can guide the interpretation of qualitative data. The authors then analyze testing data from a patient in long-term psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy in order to demonstrate an approach to data analysis and to show an example of how change can unfold over long-term treatments.

Financial performance of individual organizations differ very significantly, however, the performance is distinguishable between public sector companies and private sector companies as their nature and size of investment and business environment is different . The ECIL is a very vast growing company which requires additional funds on a regular basis, whether internal or external. Particularly, the company needs both long term and short-term finances in view of its present position and enormous scope for improvement in the services provided. The present paper is a modest attempt to discuss the financial performance analysis of ECIL, Hyderabad in terms operating profits, capital employed ratios and turnover in a comprehensive manner over a period of 10 years.

Abstract Focusing on seven major agricultural commodities with a long history of trade, this study employs data-driven analytics to decipher patterns of trade, namely using supervised machine learning (ML), as well as neural networks. The supervised ML and neural network techniques are trained on data until 2010 and 2014, respectively. Results show the high relevance of ML models to forecasting trade patterns in near- and long-term relative to traditional approaches, which are often subjective assessments or time-series projections. While supervised ML techniques quantified key economic factors underlying agricultural trade flows, neural network approaches provide better fits over the long term.

The Japanese ocean-going shipbuilding industry has evolved into two distinct sectors and today's second tier or medium-sized firms build close to half the nation's output of large ocean-going vessels. Many vessels recently delivered by the major and the medium-sized shipbuilders are of similar size and complexity. However, the medium-sized shipbuilding companies of Japan differ considerably from the majors in business strategy and corporate structure. To date, studies published in English on the Japanese shipbuilding industry have focused mainly on the seven major firms. In this paper Japan's medium-sized shipbuilders are introduced. Their competitive environment, operations, and strategies are compared with those of the seven major firms. The relative strengths and weaknesses of the major and medium-sized shipbuilders are considered and the role of technological development in the long-term prospects of both is discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an understanding of corporate risk management practices in Romanian companies, by investigating the risk management approaches Romanian companies take. Our main findings are that Romanian managers are not aware of the magnitude of exposure their companies have to various types of risk – hazard, operational, financial and strategic risks, while they are able to manage rather well all these risks, even the ones that have the lowest impact on the business. At the same time, risk management systems employed by Romanian companies are rather inarticulate and based on traditional approaches towards risk management, which might represent by itself a major source of risk, given the complexity of the business environment they face.

There are statistics that foreign direct investments (FDI) in Albania have significantly declined. Business climate and skill of policies to attract FDI in Albania has apparently not impacted the promotion of investments from foreign businesses. This study assesses the business environment disadvantages and the readiness and availability of foreign investors to take risks with their investments in a foreign market facing the business climate of the host country, as well as the skill or failure of the latter for long term cooperation. Some basic components of the business climate in Albania, impact and their attractiveness to foreign investors will be analyzed and assessed. The research methodology selected for this study is the quantitative one, where a number of about 100 CEO and administrators of medium and big foreign companies in Albania have been planned to be interviewed. The measuring instrument will be standardized and after data collection, a series of analyses will be built such as correlation, means, standard deviations, frequencies, Chi-square (χ2) where the value p00.5. Analysis of variables will be realized through SPSS program. The study will be closed with relevant conclusions and recommendations.

Both at European and national level tertiary and quaternary sectors are concentrated in the metropolitan centre. In the rural areas only the sites of such sectors can be found the premises of which temporarily transform the sectoral structure of these areas, but from the regional development aspect they did not prove to be an effective strategy.The European Commission is now focusing on growth from innovation, which could become the driving force behind productivity growth and the economy’s long-term trend. The innovation-oriented economic development’s key players are on the one hand the knowledge-intensive enterprises, on the other hand the universities. Tertiary education can play a role – among others – in shaping and creating the development of knowledge intensive business environment and conditions, on the other hand it can assist the development of network contacts – another precondition of employment growth.

The development of the business environment in globalization era has been triggered an increasingly tight business competition. Every companies who have an established its own strategies to manage a variety of information, human resources, allocation of funds and others. Accounting information system is a great resources that very valuable to an organization for the smoothness management of the company’s financial and decision making wheter it is to long term and short term, however there are several aspect that can be a factors the effectiveness of the accounting information system, that is manager’s participation. The research is aimed to proves that manager’s participation and manager’s involvement had a positive influence on the effectiveness of accounting information system (AIS) at manufacturing company, especially in the industrial zone Batamindo Mukakuning Batam City. The research method is using regression analysis to proves are the manager’s participation (independent variable) and manager’s involvement (independent variable) gives effect to the effectiveness of information system (dependent variable) or not. The result of this research is shows that variable of manager’s participation and manager’s involvement has a significant influence to the effectiveness of information system. The method is using purposive sampling is done by taking a sampling of the population according to certain criteria.
