Managing Students' Attendance using NFC-Enabled Mobile Phones

Attendance management for educational institutions is very important; it gives clear picture of students who regularly attend classes. Participating in academic activities such as lectures, laboratory experiments by students affects their academic performance. However, the conventional way of attendance registration is time consuming and prone to proxy attendance. The process involves the lecturer passing a paper to the students in a class to write their names and sign, or find their names in the paper to sign along their names. Several technologies like Biometric, RFID, NFC, etc can be used to simplify and improve the attendance system, since user identification is the most important aspect that needs to be handled cautiously in this type of applications. In this work we propose a smart attendance system using NFC that will simplify the attendance process, by simply touching a poster or the lecturer's NFC based mobile device in the class.

Academic performance is taken as the process of carrying out academic activities and discourses by faculty members to enhance their academic activities and discourses. The purpose of this research was to identify the faculty member's level of academic performance in higher educational institutions. To conduct this research, a quantitative methodology was employed. The tools to measure the academic performance of faculty members were developed using Delphi method. The data were collected with 445 sampled respondents from four universities. The factor analysis was used to explore the dimensions of academic performance. The factor analysis identified four factors of academic performance i.e., research and publication, innovation, interactive learning, and capacity building. To analyze the level of academic performance, mean and the standard deviation was used. It was found that individual differences and the organizational environment, culture, and technological infrastructure were crucial to influence the pace and level academic performance in academia.

Academic performance is the driving force of academic institutions to carry out innovative ideas. This research aims to identify how the faculty members are practising their knowledge of academic activities to enhance academic discourses in their academic life. The academic discourses are determined by the academic activities of the faculty and these enhance the capabilities of both faculty members and students. In this regard, applying knowledge creation theory, the study explored the dimensions of academic activities practised by the faculty members in higher educational institutions. Adopting a survey method, the data was collected from 445 faculty members from four universities of Nepal. To identify the key dimensions of academic performance, factor analysis was used. The analysis identified four dimensions of academic performance as research and publication, innovation, interactive learning, and capacity building. The study claims that research and publication are less prioritized in Nepali academia while capacity building is identified as a new priority area in the context of university.

Currently, in Colombia, different problems in education exist; one of them is the inconvenience in tracing and controlling the learning trajectories that decide the topics taught in the country’s educational institutions. This work aims to implement a logic-based system that allows teachers and educational institutions to carry out a continuous monitoring process of students’ academic performance, facilitating early corrections of errors or failures in teaching methods, to promote educational support spaces within the educational institution.

Curriculum and instructional planning is important to ensure that academic activities run without interruption in an academic year or term. Heads of departments (HODs of Science) play a pivotal role in implementation of curriculum in secondary schools. Planning is one of the functions vested on HODs to ensure proper implementation of curriculum in their departments. This paper therefore looks at HODs planning skills towards academic performance improvement in three science subjects in public secondary schools in Nandi County, Kenya. The decision to choose HODs of science was due to the importance that is placed on science subject but which has recorded below average performance compared to other subjects in Kenya Certificate of Secondary School. The three science subjects under investigation are; Physics, Biology and Chemistry for secondary schools. The study used mixed method research design. The study had three target populations that comprised of 231 heads of departments, 231 principals and 693 teachers. The sample size of the study was determined using Krejcie and Morgan formulae of determining sample size and comprised of 23 principals, 128 HODS of science and 247 teachers who were selected through stratified random sampling. Data collection was through questionnaires and interview schedule. Analysis of data was performed through quantitative and qualitative methods. The correlation analysis was computed from HODs and science teachers’ data. The study discovered that most of them only planned for science practicals to be conducted on occasional basis by teachers in the department. Moreover, the HODs of Science ensured that the planned activities were conducted as planned. However, the HODs of Science were found not to have proper planning skills on ICT usage, acquisition of instructional material and conducting training needs assessment for teachers. The computed correlation statistics showed that there existed significant influence (p<0.05) between planning skills by HODs of Science and academic performance of students in sciences in public secondary schools in Nandi County. The study recommends that HODs of Science need to be informed by Quality Assurance and Standards Officers (QASOs) that they need to be proactive and not reactive to the responsibilities under their docket. Participatory planning practices needs also to be embraced by HODs of Science for improved implementation and execution of set objectives and targets. Mobile phones have become so ubiquitous that they turned into an important part of our life. According to Parsons, mobile subscriptions exceed 6 billion subscriptions globally. Similarly, Ipsos and Verizon (as cited in Tan & El-Bendary) found out that adopting mobile phones with smart technologies has increased fast which also coincided with a more utilization of their Internet capabilities. With the abundance of knowledge the Internet provides, mobile phones become an invaluable pathway for that knowledge. The fact that these gadgets are well-liked by students make them one of the best tools to be adopted by educational institutions. This study will investigate the actual academic use of mobile phones among students and teachers, their attitudes toward using them as learning or teaching tools, and if there is a significant difference in attitudes of the participants toward using mobile as learning or teaching tools based on the job criteria (Student vs. Faculty Member).

The current study was aimed to examine the impact of psychological adjustment / maladjustment on the academic performance of Russian university students. Previous studies have shown that academic performance is closely related to alienation from study, study engagement, academic motivation, perceived stress, academic control, and boredom proneness. Some researchers also have suggested that adolescent apathy may be the risk factor for academic failure among university students. In turn, the American psychologist R. Handelman defined adolescent apathy as a specific state of lack of goal-setting, energy and interest, indifference to changes and experience of difficulties in making decisions in young adults [27]. In September 2019, 103 students (73 females and 30 males) aged 16 to 21 years from several Moscow universities filled out instruments assessing adolescent apathy, alienation from study, study engagement, academic motivation, perceived stress, academic control, and boredom proneness. The study was conducted at seminars in psychological disciplines. All study participants received bonus points in these disciplines. In January 2019, based on the results of the examination session, an average score was calculated for each study participant. This score became a criterion for academic performance of university students. There were no statistically significant age and gender differences in the scores of psychological adjustment / maladjustment. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that adolescent apathy was the single indicator that affects the academic performance of university students. Thus, the higher scores of adolescent apathy university students showed at the beginning of the academic year, the lower the average scores they received for the first exam session. Based on these data, it was concluded that adolescent apathy is a risk factor for academic failure and can serve as a target for preventive and interventional measures related to academic failure among Russian university students. Currently, in foreign practice, programs and recommendations are being developed and implemented for teachers of higher educational institutions who are faced with the adolescent apathy outcomes. Perhaps this study, which has proved the importance of adolescent apathy in the context of academic failure among university students, will be the first step towards the development and implementation of similar programs and recommendations for Russian educational institutions.

The student's academic development, retention, and attainment gap are considered as the common key factors that influence the institutional academic performance. In this regard, educational institutions are focusing to reduce the attainment gap between good, average, and poor performing students. Two different datasets are taken for this study. Students' data is collected through questionnaire, and Dataset 1 (D1) is created. The second dataset (D2) is taken from the repository. Both the datasets have been preprocessed followed by attribute selection and predictive modeling. In this study, predictive models have been built, and the learners are classified as high, average, and low performers based on their academic scores as well as on their demographic characters. The three classifier models are applied on the datasets. Based on the evaluation measures, the best classifier is identified. This early identification of low performance students will help the educators as well as the learners to put a special care to enhance the learning process as well as to improve the academic performance.

AbstractObjective:The present study investigated the relationship between academic performance, self efficacy and perceived social support of visually impaired students.Sample:A purposive sample consisting of 60 visually impaired students was selected from three institutions in Lahore, comprising boys and girls in equal number.Instruments: Translated versions of Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale by Zimet, Dehlam and Farley and Generalized Self Efficacy Scale by Jerusalem were used for the purpose of data collection.Results:Significant correlation was found between academic performance, self efficacy, and perceived social support. Gender differences were found in academic achievement. Girls secured a higher percentage of marks than boys.Conclusion:Visually impaired students can make King Edward Medical University/ Mayo Hospital, Lahore significant educational attainments if they are provided support. This in turn will add to their self efficacy which may lead to even greater achievement. Educational institutions need to design and set up support networks by involving faculty and students for promoting higher achievement and selfreliance in visually impaired students.

This study evaluates the relationship between Internet addiction and academic performance among students of eight Afghan universities. The differences between internet addiction in terms of gender was also identified. The survey/research method adopted the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) based on Young’s survey applied with some modifications. From 1000 distributed questionnaires only 976 participants (358 females, and 618 males) were responded completely. The descriptive analysis was used to identify the demographic characteristics of student’s Internet usage profile. The independents sample t-test was performed to determine the differences in the level of Internet addiction in terms of gender. Statistical significance was set at a value of p <0.01. Likewise, the correlation test was implemented to identify the relationship between Internet addiction and academic performance, with referencing of sample. The results indicated that statistically there is a significant correlation among Internet addiction and academic performance. Results also indicated that statistically there were significant differences between Internet addictions in terms of demographic characteristics. This study suggests that future researchers need to work on large sample while conducting the related research. It emphasizes that students should concentrate more on their academic activities than spending time on unnecessary Internet surfing. Findings also revealed that, in Afghanistan the problem of Internet addiction is not a serious challenge, but this information should be disseminated among undergraduate university students to stop the indulgent in using the Internet.

In educational institutions, the use of virtual assistants has beenencouraged due to the possibility of disseminating relevant information,assisting in communication between actors and providingsupport in organizing academic activities. Despite the existence ofseveral virtual assistants, these systems do not present real-timeinformation or data at a personalized level of detail. In addition,the systems that provide this information are not free of charge,making it difficult for institutions with low resources to adopt them.Considering the importance of assisting students and teachers duringacademic activities through the provision of information, thiswork presents a proposal for a virtual assistant application forFederal Institute of Amazonas Campus Manaus Distrito Industrial(IFAM/CMDI). Brainstorming and benchmarking techniques wereapplied to survey the functionalities to be presented by the systemand a high-fidelity prototype of the system was developed. As aresult, it was possible to present the various dialogues that theassistant will provide and the types of information that will bepresented to the various actors within the educational institution.
