In the United States (U.S.) retail industry, endorsement from an industry key figure spurred the adoption of radio frequency identification (RFID), but this did not turn out to be the case within the pharmaceutical industry. In order to provide insight into adoption drivers that are specific to the pharmaceutical industry, this research develops a theoretical model of RFID adoption factors, in which: (i) technology standardization is the main driver; (ii) three aspects of RFID technology that need to be standardized are specified; (iii) special attention is given to the adoption behavior of late adopters, rather than the existing early adopters; and (iv) a specific context for the pharmaceutical industry is provided by taking into account the key industry characteristics. The model provides practical insight for dealing with some of the adoption challenges faced by the U.S. pharmaceutical industry.

One of the most compelling cases for RFID-embedded technologies in the healthcare field has been made by documenting increased efficiency in supply chain performance measurements, which generally consist of financial and non-financial indicators. The following chapter suggests that patient flows and safety are key measures of hospital operation efficiency. Process bottlenecks in hospitals can delay discharge times, and lead to higher costs and lower quality of service, which in turn affects the overall performance and business of the hospital. Hospitals have struggled to control costs, and RFID-embedded technologies should allow management to prioritize their technology spending and reduce total cost of suppliers and operational expenses.

Counterfeit drugs have become a menace and a dangerous problem for human kind in recent years. The complex nature of pharmaceutical supply chain has made it difficult to control the proliferation of counterfeit drugs being consumed along with the regular drugs. The pharmaceutical industry needs to come up with answers to protect public health, minimize supplier risk, protect brand reputation and promote the integrity of the supply chain. In its report on “Combating Counterfeit Drugs” the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded that RFID tagging appeared to be “the most promising approach to reliable product tracking and tracing.” (FDA, 2004).[3] In this paper, we will explore how counterfeit pharmaceuticals are finding their way into the supply chain, the consequences experienced on a patient level as a result of counterfeit medicine consumption and more importantly how RFID is of help in fighting this global crime efficiently. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) has brought a revolutionary change in many industries, especially in supply chain management. Implementing RFID in pharmaceutical industry is a game changer for the pharmaceutical industry because of the ability it provides to efficiently and effectively track medicines from origin to customer, resulting in an overall reduction of the entrance of medicinal counterfeit items in to the supply chain. Not only will RFID technology use benefit the health industry, but also those at the warehouse level, by eliminating the manual work required when using barcodes.
