The Use of Social Media in Facilitating Participatory Design

This chapter examines the effectiveness of using social media as an aid to primary school students participating in the design of their classroom interior layout. It describes two different attempts to do this that achieved varying degrees of success. Where a blog and Facebook page were set up to provide a virtual space for classroom design to happen, and despite teachers' expressed enthusiasm for involving students in the design of their classroom layout, very few participants resulted. However, one school successfully used the virtual space to show the work of the children and this example is described in the chapter. Social media was of more use in a second example where it formed an additional channel of communication between the researcher in the role of architect and the students. However, here it built on face-to-face communication, suggesting social media can aid in participatory design but is not a substitute for the latter.

Increased access and the convenience of participation to and through the internet encourage connectivity among citizens. These new and enhanced connections are no longer dependent on real-life, face-to-face interactions, and are less restricted by the boundaries of time and space (Frissen, 2005). In this chapter, two cases from the Philippines are documented and assessed in order to look at online citizen engagement. The first case looks at how people participate in promoting tourism in the Philippines through social media. The second case involves their use of social media for disaster response. Previous studies on ICTs and participation in the Philippines have looked at the role of intermediaries (see Alampay, 2002). Since then, the role of social media, in particular that of Facebook and Twitter, has grown dramatically and at times completely circumvents traditional notions of intermediation. The role of Facebook, in particular, will be highlighted in this chapter, and the authors will analyze its effectiveness, vis-à-vis traditional government channels for communication and delivery of similar services. By looking at these two cases and assessing the abovementioned aspects, it is hoped that the use of social media can be seen as an integral part of e-governance especially in engaging citizens to participate in local and national governance.

Banyak kasus yang menunjukkan lunturnya karakter santun di kalangan siswa di Sekolah  Dasar akibat kurangnya perhatian keluarga terhadap sikap dan perilaku anak juga akibat pengaruh negatif yang ditimbulkan oleh media sosial. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengategorikan peran keluarga dan media sosial dalam membentuk karakter santun siswa di Sekolah Dasar serta menyanggah atau menyetujui teori habitus Pierre Bordieu. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Subjek penelitian adalah empat siswa kelas lima Sekolah Dasar Supriyadi dan Sekolah Dasar Primadana Semarang beserta orang tua mereka. Pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Analisis data menggunakan teknik induktif interaktif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keluarga berperan dalam mendidik, mengajarkan pengetahuan, dan mengevaluasi setiap sikap dan perilaku siswa Sekolah Dasar selama ia berada di lingkup keluarga, sekolah, dan masyarakat. Sedangkan media sosial tidak berperan positif dalam pembentukan karakter santun siswa, akan tetapi justru berperan mengganggu dan merusak karakter santunnya. Oleh karena itu, keluarga harus berperan melakukan manajemen penggunaan media sosial untuk anak dalam berbagai fungsinya, seperti manajemen sebagai sarana edukasi, sarana hiburan, dan alat komunikasi untuk mempertahankan karakter santunnya. Kata Kunci: Peran, keluarga, media sosial, karakter santun THE ROLE OF FAMILY AND SOCIAL MEDIA IN BUILDING STUDENT'S POLITE CHARACTER IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Abstract: Many cases show the declining character of politeness among students in elementary school due to the lack of family attention to their attitudes and behavior as well as the negative influence caused by social media. The purpose of this study is to categorize the role of family and social media in shaping the polite character of students in elementary schools and refuting or agreeing with habitus theory of Pierre Bordieu. This research uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The research subjects were four fifth grade students of Supriyadi Elementary School and Primadana Elementary School in Semarang and their parents. Data collection uses interview, observation, and documentation techniques. Data analysis uses interactive inductive techniques. The results show that the family has a role in educating, teaching knowledge, and evaluating every attitude and behavior of elementary school students as long as he was in the scope of the family, school, and community. Whereas social media does not play a positive role in shaping students' polite character, but instead plays a role in disrupting and damaging their polite characters. Therefore, the family must play a role in managing the use of social media for children in a variety of functions, such as management as a means of education, entertainment, and communication tools to maintain their polite character. Keywords: Role, family, social media, polite character

We sought to identify the key dynamics in the relationship between social media and violence by identifying new mechanisms that elucidate how Internet banging becomes offline violence through the perceptions of the Black and Latino boys and men. We conducted 33 interviews with Black and Latino boys and men aged 14–24 who live in Chicago, have experience with gang violence, and are social media users. In our investigation of the use of social media by boys and young men to navigate neighborhood violence, we uncovered a recurring narrative about gender relationships in violence. Male participants often attributed escalations of violence to girls and young women, beginning with online communications that migrated to face-to-face meetings. They described girls and young women as the precipitators of violence through “set-up” meetings that began under the guise of romance, dating, and courtship. This study provides an in-depth examination of how males perceive girls and young women as unique threats to their personal safety, a narrative we must engage with in order to further current violence prevention efforts. Future research is needed to examine the lived experiences of young women, their experience with and exposure to social media-related gang violence, and their view of social media behaviors of men that may lead to violence.

<p>Very few research studies have been dedicated to understanding the role of social media, diversity and vulnerability during a highly impacting event for a society. Social media are very important nowadays as a way to be in "connection to" and "link between" individuals. Thanks to technological support it is possible to create new virtual and real social relationships and networks and to be always up to date about what happen in the world. The role that virtual space plays "reducing distances", connecting people and places and facilitating the provision of support to people in need, has been receiving increasing interest in disaster studies in last years. In particular, connectivity has assumed an increasing role in relation to the diffusion of means to reach people and places in virtual mode. Furthermore, the use of social media as a means of providing information on disasters and risks could help to reduce exposure in disasters. However, several knowledge gaps are still opened, and in particular which are the potential repercussions of a high connected disaster management process on vulnerability? How can the weight of diversity change into the virtual space? The premise is that not everyone has the same possibility of accessing social media (e.g. to be informed, to know what is happening and to link with rescuers). The difficulty of accessing social media can make people invisible into the disaster management process with the risk that someone could be left behind. Thus, this presentation aims to discuss the challenges that derive from an increasing use of social platform in providing and receiving information during disasters. A second relevant point, that this presentation aims to discuss, is linked to the way citizens perceive communication platforms and how the flow of information significantly impacts on the interpretation and on the management of risk. Conclusions of this work suggest that communication should take into account the risk perception models by the public and therefore the peculiarities of each vulnerable group, to provide "targeted" communications in relation to the cultural context with the aim of reducing vulnerability growing up citizens’ awareness and knowledge. Social media has become widely adopted in both society and business. However, the academy has been slow to leverage social media as a learning tool. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, this study explores student perceptions about the use of social media in face-to-face classroom environments. Second, this study examines how social media, as a learning tool, supports presentation skill development. Using a proprietary social media application, we conducted a sequential mixed method study using students enrolled in undergraduate introductory information systems courses that included a student presentation project. One hundred seventy-seven students responded to a survey based on a facilitator and inhibitor model of social media use and an open-ended questionnaire to understand how social media impacts presentation skill development. The implications of the results from this study are discussed along with directions for future research.

The limitless development of social media, its meaning and function have begun to shift, no longer as a means of establishing relationships, communication, but at the stage of losing the role of ethics and morals, even disputes have occurred triggered by debates from communicating in social media. The purpose of this study is to describe the role of Christian ethics education in relation to the impact of social media development in the era of disruption. Using descriptive qualitative methods with literature literature can find solutions for believers in facing moral decadence due to social media abuse by knowing the era of disruption and ethical challenges from the wrong use of social media can affect moral decadence so that Christian ethics education on a biblical basis can bring modern humans. Believers in particular have become bright in social media and their use in accordance with Christian faith in this era of disruption.

Social networks are taking up more and more place in the daily life of modern people, becoming an integral part of our existence. At the same time, the role of social networks is constantly growing along with the rapid growth in the number of their active users. As online interaction for many has become more used than face-to-face communication, social networks have begun to seriously affect the way of life, communication, interests and psychology of people. The use of social networks is growing exponentially and has covered more than a third of the worlds population; therefore, researchers from different countries are actively studying social networks. Considerable empirical data has been accumulated that requires generalization and understanding, which is the purpose of this review. We found positive links between social media addiction and depression, anxiety, stress, neuroticism, emotional problems, low self-esteem, cyber-victimization, physical health problems, mental disorders, loneliness, procrastination, smartphone and internet addiction, and infidelity in relationships. Negative links were revealed between social media addiction and life satisfaction, academic performance of schoolchildren and students, labor productivity and commitment to the organization of its employees, social capital, and age. The main reason for social media addiction is the need for communication, and women are generally more active in social networks than men. This review provides only those links of social media addiction that have been established in a number of studies conducted in different countries. The presented results were obtained abroad using foreign language questionnaires that determine social media addiction. The lack of such a reliable and valid tool among Russian-speaking psychologists has become a serious factor hindering the conduct of similar domestic research. With this in view, the author developed a specially designed social media addiction questionnaire.

This study aims to explain the role of Social Media "Facebook" and its impacts ahead of the elections of regional heads in 2017 in Aceh Jaya district. Data required in this study was obtained through literature and field research. The research literature is done by reading textbooks, legislation, and other reading materials related to this research. While the field research conducted by interviewing informants. The results showed that social media "Facebook" very effective way of delivering a variety of things including the introduction of a track record as well as the vision and mission of the future leaders of Aceh Jaya fore. Campaigns that use social networking "Facebook" more influential than campaigns that are only focused on the delivery of any information or content (in the sense of simply using billboard and his card only). In the use of social media "Facebook" there are various impacts. There are two impacts: the effect of positive and negative impacts. The positive impact of the using social media "Facebook" in the election of Aceh Jaya, namely (1) the establishment of kinship fellow Team (timses) of each candidate, (2) can foster public participation in politics (3) provides information on the dynamics of the election in Aceh Jaya (4) to introduce the candidates (5) to introduce the vision and mission of the candidates. Social media is web-based application that allows users to communicate, collaborate, and share resources with other people. Both being easy to access and easy to use make social media become an effective way to communicate and exchange ideas. Students can use social media to keep up with their friends, to stay up-to-date with news and current events, to fill up spare time, to find entertaining content, and to share opinions. The use of social media becomes famous for the students nowadays. Thus, the popularity of the social media among students can be used as a tool in language teaching. One of the famous social media is Instagram. Instagram is a social network that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them publicly or privately on the application, as well as through a variety of other social network. Through Instagram the students can post their photos or videos that can be commented by viewers. By using Instagram, teachers are offered great opportunity to develop classroom activities creatively. This paper will give an overview of the use of Instagram in teaching writing recount text in senior high school students.
