Intelligent Agents for Knowledge Management in E-Commerce

E-commerce has become a key aspect of the global business environment, causing fundamental changes in markets and organisational structures. This chapter considers how knowledge management, the latest management approach aimed at improving business performance, can create new business opportunities in the new business environment that is defined by electronic commerce. Knowledge management deals with the systematic generation, codification and transfer of knowledge and can be supported by a number of technologies, known as knowledge management tools. It has been argued that intelligent systems can offer additional capabilities and advantages in comparison with more traditional information technologies. This chapter investigates the potential of intelligent agent-based software for more effective knowledge management in the context of e-commerce, adopting the perspective of an SME involved in development of intelligent agents-based knowledge management software. The chapter concludes with a research agenda for knowledge management research in e-commerce.

The main objective of this research study is to investigate the extent to which knowledge management is used within the mining industry. Knowledge management includes the identification and examination of available and required knowledge and the subsequent planning and control of actions to develop knowledge assets to accomplish organizational objectives. A structured questionnaire is used for the study. A total of 300 mines were randomly selected from a research population of mining organizations in South Africa, Africa and globally. The respondents were all part of senior management. A response rate of 64% was achieved. A significant number of respondents indicates that there is no transfer of knowledge about the best practices within their organizations. Some of the participants indicate that their organizations do not have the required technical infrastructure to enable knowledge sharing whilst some agree that the culture in their organizations is not conducive to the sharing of knowledge. A statistically and practically significant positive relationship with a large effect is found between the construct of knowledge management and perceived business performance. The mining organizations in Africa are ranked the lowest in terms of applications of knowledge management principles

Contemporary business environment imposes new business rules. The maximization of profit and shareholder value cannot be the only aim of an enterprise. Instead, enterprises are forced to maximize value of all stakeholders in order to survive in the long run. The issue of sustainability has become of crucial significance, and especially measurement and reporting on sustainability, as well as, its effects on financial performances, as still dominant ones in the contemporary business performance measurement models. Hence, the subject of the research is the enterprise sustainability in the contemporary business environment. The aim of the research is to stress the role and the significance of the sustainability in the process of improving the enterprise efficiency. The research results show that the enterprise sustainability has the positive implications on the business performances in the long run, as well as on the welfare of all stakeholders. In order to be more transparent, it is desirable for enterprises to create the sustainability report, in the integration with the traditional business report, which would give the complete overview of enterprise efficiency.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the main barriers, practices, methods and knowledge management tools in startups that are characterized as agile organizations with dynamic capabilities to meet the demands of a business environment of high volatility, uncertainties, complexity and ambiguity. Design/methodology/approach The conceptual basis of the research focused on the triad: agile organization, dynamic capabilities and knowledge management. Field research began by interviewing experts to identify the barriers, practices, methods and knowledge management tools in startups. Based on the theoretical review, on the desk research and on the result of interviews with experts, a quantitative research was carried out with the leading startups coworking of São Paulo city. The obtained data made it possible to develop descriptive analyses and run linear regressions and cluster analysis for exploratory research. Findings Startups with higher maturity in innovation level, solution development level, and scalability development level, present a higher degree of utilization of the practices, methods and tools dedicated to knowledge management. Practical implications It is expected that results of the research presented in detail will be able to illustrate concrete examples of practices, methods, and knowledge management tools for large established companies seeking the organizational agility of startups. Originality/value This study contributes to the identification of barriers, practices, methods and tools of management of knowledge in startups, through the conceptual triad: agile organization, dynamic capabilities and knowledge management.

In the Czech Republic, Knowledge Management-related problems occur at all knowledge stages with difficulties more predominant at an organisational level. In principal, they originate from the lack of an utilisable and detailed KM implementation methodology; varying perceptions of KM coupled with the notion, that KM equates and is limited to information technologies and the like. As a reaction to these problems, the Faculty of Informatics and Management at the University of Hradec Králové (FIM UHK) developed a new KM implementation methodology. It aims to provide interested parties with a set of ground rules distributed among a number of phases. Further development is underway to elaborate the method by integrating project management tools, benchmarking exercises and critical success factors. Despite this endeavour, there is an on-going need for further research given the reality that small and medium sized enterprises constitute the majority of organisations in the Czech Republic.

Although there is no commonly agreed upon</div><div>definition of knowledge management, companies, governments, institutions and</div><div>organizations are demonstrating an increasing interest in the topic. The key argument</div><div>of this chapter is that most current interpretations of knowledge management</div><div>are relevant to the industrial world of business of the past era. Given their origin in</div><div>the ‘old world’ of business, many such interpretations of knowledge management</div><div>may have serious and adverse implications for information strategy of enterprises,</div><div>governments and institutions.</div><div>The discussion surfaces the key assumptions about information strategy and</div><div>how they need to be considered afresh given the changing assumptions about</div><div>business strategy and competitive business environment. Based on this discussion,</div><div>a new perspective of knowledge management is proposed followed by suggestions</div><div>for the managers to effectively deploy it in the ‘new world’ of e-business. For the</div><div>purpose of this article, the focus of discussion is on e-business enterprises as most</div><div>observations are already evident in such organizations. However, most of the</div><div>arguments, observations and conclusions are also relevant to executives interested</div><div>in information strategy and business transformation for other post-industrial organizations</div><div>in the twenty-first century.</div>

Knowledge management as traditionally espoused has two main strands: dealing with the aggregation of knowledge, and the transfer of knowledge. However, this official discourse and its key concepts grew out of the experience of large, mature, highly structured and dispersed enterprises. A look at the environment in which small enterprises work suggests a different set of key concepts, considering the notions of experience and structural capital as key knowledge manipulation tools. These tools are particularly relevant to environments of high uncertainty, volatility and risk — and so also have a significant contribution to make to the direction of knowledge management for larger enterprises, where adaptiveness and ignorance management tools are becoming increasingly important.

Every organization needs the proper knowledge management (KM) strategy for the development of the organization. In the last decades the business environment has changed and recently it becomes more dynamic and more complex. At present KM is valuable not only for individuals, and organizations, but also, for global humanity. So, the directors of the organizations must emphasize on the existing knowledge and try to develop them to achieve the competitive advantage. The purpose of the study is to explore the recent KM practice in the organizations and to show the ways to develop the new KM strategy in future. An attempt has been taken here to apply KM strategy in business performance, business intelligence, and e-business.

This paper aims to describe the concept of applying Artificial Intelligence to IT Operations (AIOps) and its main components, Big Data, Machine Learning and Trend Analysis. The concept was implemented by developing a multi-layered fusion of the technologies that powers the components in AIOps platforms present on the IT market. The core of an AIOps platform is represented by the Big Data organization structure and by a massive parallel data processing platform like Apache Hadoop. The ML component of the platform is able to infer the future behaviour and the regular operations that are performed from the large volume of collected data, in order to develop the ability to automate the activities. AIOps platforms find their place especially in very complex IT infrastructures, ones that require constant monitoring and quick decisions in case of failures. The case study is based on the Moogsoft AIOps platform, and its features are presented in detail, using the Cloud trial version, clearly showing the potential of such an advanced tool for infrastructure monitoring and reporting. The experiment was focused on the way Moogsoft is monitoring computing resources,    is handling events and records alerts for the defined timespan, alerts grouped by category (like web services, social media, networking). The platform is also able to display at any given moment the unresolved situations and their type of origin, and includes automated remediation tools. The study presents the features of this software category, consisting in benefits for the business environment and their integration into the Internet-of-Things model.
