Role-play is a holistic pedagogy in teaching. The technique instills critical thinking in pupils, enhances emotional intelligence, and improves morality and forms of realism about information. The chapter examines the influence of role-play teaching technique on English performance among the pupils with hearing impairment in Kenyan primary schools. The chapter looks at several elements of role-playing such as games, real-life expression, imitation, positive impact, and the challenges facing the effective implementation of the use of role-play in teaching and learning in primary schools of learners with hearing impairment. This study is a desktop review and only relies on secondary materials. The literature was sourced in various databases. The review revealed that role-play improves the self-efficacy of the learner since the technique is grounded in reality. Learning is enhanced when the activities involved are memorable and engaging.

Der argumenteres for, at rollespillet er et eksempel på en strategisk praksis, der fungerer ved at inddrage de lærende i påvirkningen af sig selv og hinanden. Gennem et feltstudie af et træningsforløb for forældre med udadreagerende børn er rollespil som læringsteknologi undersøgt. Med et foucaultiansk magtperspektiv belyses de specifikke teknikker, der gør rollespillet til en legende praksis, for siden at tillægge det en anden alvor. Artiklen viser, hvordan rollespillet tager form i samspillet mellem instruktører og forældre og viser sig virksomt ved at inkludere forældrene i udførelsen og omdirigere deres modstand. ENGELSK ABSTRACT: Lotte Galløe: Imaginary Real Life. The Governed Learning of Role Playing This paper examines role-playing as a learning technology. It focuses on role-playing, as employed in the social services, as an advanced form of governance aiming to produce a certain behavior on the part of the learners. Based on an ethnographic interpretation of Michel Foucault’s notion of power, the paper sheds light on role-playing in practice in Parent Management Training (PMTO) group sessions. Role-playing in PMTO exemplifies the use of particular techniques that shape role-playing as an imaginary game, and simultaneously ascribes it significance in real life. The article argues that role-playing’s apparent non-serious approach enables a strategic practice engaging the learners in the governing actions targeted towards shaping them as subjects. The paper shows how the techniques of enactment, instruction, and evaluation unfold by involving the parents in the performance. Finally the paper shows how resistance is rejected or adapted within the governing practice. Keywords: role-play, Foucault, governance, PMTO, learning.

It is known that the lexicon of a particular language is much more than a list of individual words. The English language is full of somewhat formulaic language, especially established idiomatic expressions. Considering everyday situations in which such expressions are used and the significant role that they play in communication, there has been increasing awareness of these expressions in second language teaching and learning. It is therefore very important for lecturers to create strategies to make these expressions more understandable and memorable to their students as possible. This study investigates teaching strategies used by lecturers in teaching translation of idiomatic expressions to translation students and to what extent are these strategies effective. The researchers conducted informal open-ended interviews with experts in the field of translation that analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that lecturers employ several different strategies in teaching translation of idiomatic expressions to improve students’ comprehension, which are authentic materials from real life, teaching within context, using L1 to comprehend L2 expressions, pictures, exercises, and activities, and dialogues and role play. In addition, the lecturers consider these strategies effective and useful in teaching figurative expressions. In light of these findings, the researcher recommends that idiomatic language should be taught inside classrooms before encountering the real English world, and it is the lecturers’ role to raise students’ awareness of these expressions and explore strategies that can improve students’ comprehension and production of these expressions. The study offers pedagogical suggestions on using multimodal strategies to teaching translation of English idiomatic expressions.

The purpose of this research is to know the description of interest, understanding of history subject, and creativity, effectiveness of teaching and learning activity in class in history subject at SMA Negeri 2 Banjarmasin. The research used qualitative method and the research type used was classroom action research. Descriptive research aims to give factual and accurate description regarding the facts of situation at SMA Negeri 2 Banjarmasin, especially on the role play  method in increasing the history learning interest. Data taken consist of primary and secondary data.The result of research indicates that role playing method in increasing the interest of  history at SMA Negeri 2 Banjarmasin has run well and succeeded. The assessment seen from the cognition , psychomotor, and affective aspect  of students has depicted on overall students’ learning results and objectivity. The problems faced in applying role playing method were (1) limitation of time , (2) limitation of materials which are required in the subject, (3) lack of knowledge of teacher in role playing method, and (4) less comprehension of students about role playing. Keywords: Interest and method of role playing Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui gambaran minat, pemahaman pelajaran sejarah, dan kreativitas, efektifitas kegiatan belajar mengajar siswa pada mata pelajaran sejarah di SMA Negeri 2 Banjarmasin.Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Penelitian deskriptif bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran secara faktual dan akurat mengenai fakta-fakta tentang keadaan Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri  2 Banjarmasin, khususnya dalam hal metode Bermain Peran (Role Playing) untuk meningkatkan minat  belajar sejarah. Data yang diambil terdiri dari data primer dan data sekunder.Hasil penelitian menunjukkanmetode Bermain Peran (Role Playing) untuk meningkatkan minat  belajar sejarah pada Mata Pelajaran Sejarah kelas XII IPS-4 SMA Negeri 2 Banjarmasin sudah dapat dikatakan berjalan dengan semestinya dan berhasil.Penilaian dengan melihat aspek kognitif, psikomotor, dan afektif siswa sudah menggambarkan keseluruhan hasil belajar siswa dan objektivitas.Masalah-masalah yang dihadapi dalam penerapan metode Bermain Peran (Role Playing) disini adalah (1) sedikitnya waktu, (2) materi yang dibutuhkan dalam pelajaran ini sangat terbatas, (3) guru kurangnya pengetahuan tentang metode bermain peran, dan (4) siswa kurang memahami tentang Bermain Peran.Kata Kunci:Minat dan metode  bermain peran (Role Playing)

Abstract The traditional curriculum for medical students in Japan does not include sufficient opportunity for the students to develop their skills for musculoskeletal examination and clinical reasoning and diagnosis. So, many residents report a lack of confidence in performing these tasks. Our aim was to assess the effectiveness of peer role-playing to improving these skills among 90 women medical students who were completing their first orthopaedic clinical clerkship. Participants were allocated into two groups. One group participated in role-play (the simulation group) and the other did not participate in role-play because of the clerkship schedule or almanac circumstance (the no-simulation group). This program consisted of two modules: the simulation-based module and the outpatient encounter module. Each module included two sessions. The simulation-based module had two parts: a structured encounter with role-play for musculoskeletal cases, and a structured debriefing with the course supervisor including self-reflection. The students’ performance was observed and assessed using the mini clinical evaluation exercise (mini-CEX) for musculoskeletal cases in the simulation-based module (Day1) and the outpatient encounter module (Day2). The simulation-based module increased the physical examination score on the mini-CEX because of the encounters with real-life patients with musculoskeletal symptoms. This result suggests that role-play as a peer enhancing simulation may help to improve the competency of medical students in performing a musculoskeletal physical examination in a clinical setting.

Role-playing is an effective technique in teaching and learning a third language. This technique can not only help achieve learning objectives but also increase interest among students. At the same time, the role play can be used as one of the evaluation instruments. A case study of 253 students taking Japanese as a third language course was conducted. A set of survey questions consisting of three (3) sections is given to students to (i) assess students' readiness to undergo role-playing tests as an assessment instrument in Japanese language teaching, (ii) evaluate the effectiveness of items tested in role-playing and (iii ) provide an opportunity for students to provide suggestions for improvement on the assessment instruments conducted. The results of the study found that most students agreed that role playing (i) is able to test students' language skills, (ii) improve speaking skills, (iii) increase confidence to write in Japanese, (iv) enable better interaction in Japanese, (v) enhance cooperation among group members during the preparation of the script, and (vi) is suitable as a research instrument. The results also found that in preparing the role play script (i) students are given enough time to prepare the script and practice, (ii) vocabulary given is sufficient to help students prepare the role play script, (iii) lecturers provide guidance in preparing the play script roles, (iv) the syllabus helps to prepare the script according to the theme and (v) the use of the application helps in the preparation of the acting script. Through the survey conducted, students also provided some suggestions for improvement to this assessment instrument.

PurposeThis study explores how the implementation of problem-based learning (PBL) in technical and vocational education training (TVET) systems of Nigerian higher education (HE) can enhance quality graduate outcomes. The study also explores the issues and challenges of PBL implementation in the TVET system of Nigerian HE.Design/methodology/approachThis study follows the assumptions of qualitative research. The authors interviewed 55 participants and had a focus group with 7 TVET postgraduate students. The 55 interviewees were drawn from TVET teachers (n = 33; 24 males and 9 females), Directors at National Board for Technical Education (n = 4; 3 males and 1 female), Directors of National Directorate of Employment (n = 5; 3 males and 2 females), Directors at the Federal Ministry of Education (n = 3 males), and industry executives (n = 10; 7 males and 3 females). Data were collected through a semistructured interview approach, transcribed and coded using NVivo 12 plus and analyzed through thematic analysis.FindingsThe results show that PBL in the Nigerian TVET system has positive implications for quality TVET graduate outcomes in that it can enable integrating theory and practice, motivate learning, improve students' self-efficacy, allow students to construct learning on their own, enhance graduate competencies and graduate employability. It also revealed six perceived possible major challenges to effective implementation of PBL in the Nigerian TVET system, which includes inadequacy of teaching and learning facilities; corruption in Nigerian education sector; recruitment of unqualified incompetent TVET teachers; difficulties in identifying real-life problems, among others. Participants offered benchmarks and actions and standards for improving the identified challenges, which formed a framework for coping with issues, challenges, and barriers to effective implementation of PBL in the TVET system of Nigerian HE (Table 1).Originality/valueThe results of this study are original and serve as an advocacy for Nigerian HE authorities to explore how PBL can be implemented in the TVET system to improve graduate outcomes. The study serves as a starting point for more research in the domain of improving the quality of TVET programs in Nigerian HE. Industry leaders and policymakers in Nigeria and other developing countries could use the findings from this study to increase HE and industry participation and partnership for quality of TVET program.

Although drama takes several forms such as role-playing, story-telling, dialogues, etc., it is majorly used for the purpose of communication. Drama is an influential language tool to prepare learners how to function appropriately in real life situations. A language learning environment in which dramatic activities are employed to practice the language helps learners produce discourse in realistic conversations. The present paper shows the benefits of drama in language learning. In particular, the paper aims to reveal the contributions of engaging in conversation contents through role-play and simulation activities to the development of communication skills. The great difference between the pre survey and post survey questionnaires indicated that the students demonstrated a move towards the inclusion of drama in language learning and oral skills development.

Role-playing is a teaching technique that provides students with an opportunity to engage with the material in a unique way within the classroom setting. A classroom role-play can involve students reading pre-designed scripts, students play acting characters described on role cards, or students acting out characters of their own creation. Regardless of the specific approach, role-play activities can serve to increase student retention, understanding, and engagement with the course material. In this session, educators explore the benefits and challenges associated with using role-play activities in the classroom. Participants get a chance to experience a role-play activity and consider how to facilitate a role-play that creates a memorable experience and contributes to course learning outcomes. The ultimate goal is to provide participants with the tools to use role-playing in their own teaching practices.

The Simulations and Role Play I track examined a broad range of approaches to classroom simulations and role-playing exercises. The presentations covered designs that operate online and face-to-face, model decision making at local and international levels, and run from only a few minutes to an entire semester. Participants and discussants identified several elements that are common to successful simulations. These elements included establishing clear objectives for a simulation prior to its use in a course, designing simulations to actively engage students in the learning process, and using simulations to develop professional skills, empathy, and intercultural understanding among students. The track members agreed that simulations need not be time intensive in preparation or presentation, but can be flexible and made to fit unique situations. Finally, while simulations may not increase student perceptions of the quality of instruction, the simulations do seem to increase student empathy and student decision-making skills, which are worthwhile achievements.

The objective of this study is to assess student’s attitude towards role-playing in agricultural sciences. For the purpose, an initiative was taken to develop an attitude scale using Likert’s summated rating method. Twenty one (21) statements were selected by consulting the specialists and by reviewing literature and were given to the non-sample students of B.Sc. Agriculture who were exposed to the role-playing technique. Using Likert’s Summation formula, the t- value of each statement was analyzed. From the t- value, 8 statements were retained for the final scale. The reliability and validity of the scale indicate its precision and consistency of the results. This scale is the first of its kind and can be used in future to measure the attitude of the students of various disciplines towards role-playing with suitable modifications.
