Understanding Senior Executives' Use of Information Technology and the Internet

The Internet and information technology (IT) have received considerable attention from senior executives, yet they still have not committed themselves fully to these technologies. Consequently, they are not reaping the full benefits. Recent studies investigated the factors that influence senior executives’ use of IT and the Internet. Surprisingly, only a few factors had a significant influence on usage, directly or indirectly. A better understanding of these factors can facilitate the design of interventions that address the adoption and acceptance of a new IT tool, an information system or the Internet. This chapter proposes a limited number of interventions aimed at improving usage. The Internet will change the way information is being gathered, evaluated, and communicated. This also applies for senior executives and their main constituencies. Now is the time for senior executives to hone their Internet skills so that they can receive the right information in the right way, leading to enhanced decision-making.

The development of the field of information technology is very rapid, therefore many companies, industries, shops and other business entities are using information systems to increase their business. Online sales information systems are used to carry out business processes such as distribution, sales, purchasing, marketing of goods or services by using communication networks and the internet. Online sales information systems can help people who do not have a place or shop to carry out their business. Students in this case, especially at the Catholic University of Santo Thomas, are an opportunity to take advantage of this facility in carrying out their business, especially if they do not have a place or shop to carry out their business. For this reason, an online sales information system was built that can be accessed through the website.

Information systems built in the form of social media and the internet make us able to carry out various activities without having to meet face to face. Social media is currently the main attraction for people to communicate and find information quickly. This is a great opportunity for companies to reach and expand their market. With an information system built in the form of social media and the internet, all obstacles, both distance and high costs, can be suppressed and communication can be carried out effectively. So far, PT. Red Eye Utama conducts marketing through radio advertisements, newspapers / billboards, this is what causes problems, due to limited space and time, as well as high costs to carry out all these processes. The negotiation process between the company and the customer is one of the obstacles that affects the company's service to customers. Therefore, one solution to the problems in this system is to build a Social Media Advertise Maintenance Information System. By using PIECES method analysis for improvements based on performance indicators, indicator information, economic indicators, control indicators, efficiency indicators and service indicators. To design the new system, object-oriented modeling is used, namely UML (Unified Modeling Language) which is the right tool to use in describing the system design that will be made according to User needs.

Information technology has opened up digital economic opportunities in Indonesia. A number of applications of information technology are the internet, websites and social media. The internet has become a medium of data and information traffic with very large capacities and very high speeds. Website can be used as virtual places for various purposes. Social media can be used as an online social media. Small and medium businesses are one of the pillars of national economic growth. But with the existing limitations, the small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) actors/officers are still constrained by the promotion of their products. All the facilities and advances in information technology need to be packaged in such a way that they can be utilized by SMEs in running their business. This research will design a Palembang culinary information system website. The method used is web engineering which consists of 5 (five) phases: communication, planning, modeling, construction, and dissemination. The results of this study are in the form of web prototype Palembang's culinary information system that can provide information about Palembang's culinary products for social media-based SMEs.

Abstrak Teknologi informasi (TI) menjadi bagian penting dalam menentukan keberhasilan perusahaan. TI memberikan kesempatan untuk mendapatkan keunggulan kompetitif dan menawarkan perlengkapan untuk meningkatkan produktifitas. PT Triexpi Properti Advisindo merupakan Perusahaan Konsultan dibidang properti, yang sudah menerapkan penggunaan teknologi informasi untuk pengelolaan data sistem informasi penyewaan properti yang berbasis web. Untuk memaksimal penggunaan teknologi informasi di perusahaan ini, maka akan dibutuhkan kegiatan audit IT. Audit TI yang dilakukan pada penelitian ini akan difokuskan untuk melakukan evaluasi terhadap rancangan database pada sistem informasi penyewaan properti pada PT Triexpi Properti Advisindo. Kegiatan audit TI ini bertujuan untuk evaluasi pengelolaan data pada sistem informasi penyewaan dengan menggunakan Domain Delivery & Support (DS)-DS11, yang membahas tentang bagaimana mengelola data secara efektif, yaitu dengan melakukan identifikasi kebutuhan data menggunakan kerangka kerja Cobit 4.1. Kemudian akan digunakan model maturity untuk mengontrol proses-proses TI, dengan menggunakan metode penilaian/scoring. Dengan adanya audit pada sistem informasi ini, diharapkan dapat menunjang semua kegiatan perusahaan dan memberikan informasi yang dibutuhkan baik oleh karyawan maupun Direktur dalam menentukan pengambilan keputusan. IT provides an opportunity to gain competitive advantage and offer equipment to increase productivity. PT Triexpi Properti Advisindo is a property consultant company, which has applied the use of information technology for data management of web based property rental information system. To maximize the use of information technology in this company, it will require IT audit activities. IT audit conducted in this research will be focused to evaluate the database design on property information rental system at PT Triexpi Properti Advisindo. This IT audit activity aims to evaluate the management of data on rental information systems using Domain Delivery & Support (DS) - DS11, which discusses how to effectively manage data by identifying data needs using Cobit 4.1. Then the maturity model will be used to control the IT processes, using the scoring method. With the audit on this information system, is expected to support all the activities of the company and provide information needed both by employees and Directors in determining decision making. The Internet changed the way of learning; it promotes interactivity and autonomy. Through Web 2.0 many tools could be used to plan strategies to motivate students for autonomous learning. This paper presents an analysis of such strategies applied to an industrial engineering course. It discusses an application in an Organizational Productive Arrangement (OPA) course using web tools to promote autonomous learning using an active strategy methodology. Two tools were used: a blog to promote interaction and a wiki to motivate research and collaboration. An information system was used to support an active strategy methodology. A survey of 40 students was conducted; the data is presented and discussed.

Le nombre de réfugiés dans le monde ne cesse d’augmenter. Le Haut commissariat des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés estime le nombre record de déplacés forcés en 2011 à 43,7 millions. En France, plus de 57 000 ont introduit une demande de protection à l’Office français de protection des réfugiés et apatrides. Les Somaliens constituent en France l’un des groupes en constante augmentation en raison de la crise humanitaire, politique et sécuritaire qui secoue leur pays. De nombreuses études ont été menées dans le cadre de l’accueil des réfugiés en France et de la fragilisation du droit d’asile. Les recherches s’intéressant à analyser les usages des technologies de l’information et de la communication (TIC) tels que internet et la télévision par les réfugiés restent embryonnaires. Cette présente recherche tente de combler cet écart en contribuant à l’analyse des usages d’internet et de la télévision par les réfugiés Somaliens pendant leur installation en France. Abstract The number of refugees on a global scale is increasing. In fact, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that in 2011 there were 43.7 million forcibly displaced persons reaching a worldwide record. In France, more than 57 thousand persons applied for protection to the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons. Somalis are among the refugee groups on the rise in France due to the humanitarian, political and security crises that shook their country. Numerous studies have been conducted in the context of the reception of refugees in France and the weakening of the right to asylum. This study aims to analyze the uses of Information Technology and Communication (ICT), in particular Internet and television, by refugees as such studies remains limited. This research study strives to fill this gap by contributing to the analysis of the usage of the Internet and television by Somali refugees during their settlement in France.

ABSTRACT The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Sanctuaries Hazardous Incident Emergency Logistics Database System (SHIELDS) is an Internet-based information system designed to improve access to critical data, plans, and tools for National Marine Sanctuary (NMS) personnel and their partners for contingency planning and response situations. At the core of the SHIELDS project is a website developed for each of the thirteen National Marine Sanctuaries and one coral reef ecosystem reserve in the sanctuary designation process. Each site hosts general planning and response information, such as policies and contingency plans. More so, SHIELDS takes advantage of leading information technology to improve the availability of vital response information and folds it into one comprehensive website. The use of Geographic Information System (GIS) data has expanded from static hardcopy maps to web-based interactive mapping, allowing Internet users to easily examine Sanctuary-specific geographic data from any location. SHIELDS offers NOAA modeling tools to analyze the fate of pollutants and live buoy data for real-time oceanographic conditions. Web-based databases within SHIELDS allow the user to enter or query information on personnel contact and location, potential Sanctuary threats, geographic response plans (GRPs) and Resources and UnderSea Threats (RUST) data, post updated incident text and documentation, or look up response glossary terms. Although SHIELDS relies extensively on the use of the Internet to distribute its information, it has also been designed to work as a stand-alone product for those inevitable circumstances when Internet access is not available during a response. The user can load the SHIELDS webpages and data onto their personal computer and carry it to any remote location to access the same data found on the Internet. SHIELDS provides the most comprehensive incident planning and response information for the National Marine Sanctuary Program (NMSP). This ensures that NOAA fulfills its role as stewards of Sanctuary resources and provides effective and timely response information about their trust resources.

Information technology becomes one of the important elements for an organization or company in realizing the effectiveness and efficiency of performance.  To create a company that has a good performance, it requiring the existence of an information system to assisting the management in taking a decision. In its implementation, the use of existing information system still encounter some obstacles during the operation. In this study, the authors used application belongs to Mail and Logistic (MLO) agenpos application. Therefore, SWOT analysis is needed to know the strengths and weakness in internal factors and to know the opportunities and threats in external factors. Choosing the right strategy can maximize the strengths and opportunities, on the other side can minimize the weaknesses and threats.

The relevance of the material stated in article, is caused by urgent needs of society in creation of information systems, assistance to introduction of the newest information technology into the management processes by education. Creation of information system of scientific researches planning in Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine on the Internet basis (ІS "Planning") will provide an information and technological support of processes of planning of scientific researches which are being carried out in scientific institutions of Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, and will solve a problem of effective maintenance of their performance. Organizational bases of ІS " Planning" construction, considered in the article, define directions of designing of this system and the requirements to receiving and processing procedures of the documents of scientific researches planning.
