Using iREAD in Understanding Online Reading Strategies Applied by Science and Technology Students

This article describes how with the growth of online learning, reading hypertext materials requires both online reading and navigational strategies. This article was conducted as part of a pilot study on qualitative data collection into reading of Science and Technology hypertexts that focuses on reading and navigational strategies of five university students enrolled in undergraduate Engineering programs. It presents the application of iREAD; Interactive Reading for Academic Disciplines that integrates various e-literacy tools to facilitate reading of academic hypertexts. Student's participation was within iREAD through the use of annotation tool and discussion forum. The two-phased data collection was conducted qualitatively through semi-structured interviews, screen records, and retrospective interviews. The results show that the participants mainly used a global reading strategy, serial, and mixed overview navigational strategies in the online reading environment. In addition, the article concluded that iREAD assists students to understand and organize hypertexts materials better with the use of e-tools.

The aim of this study is to present the details of a practice that is carried out within the scope of Community ServicePractices Course from a scientific perspective. And also to investigate the views of the pre-service teachers related tothe topic. Research design is determined as a case study method. For the data collection, interview method was usedfrom qualitative data collection methods. The sample is composed of 8 pre-service primary school teachers. Within therelevant course, a potted flower to be determined by the pre-service teachers was planted in a pot in a suitable place inthe faculty, and the students were given the task of undertaking all kinds of care for the flower during the semester.Semi-structured interviews with the pre-service teachers were held at the end of the term and their opinions were taken.According to the results, all of the pre-service teachers find the implementation useful and important for their teachingcareer. They stated that they got information about flower care, they gained awareness and they were impressedaffectively.

The scientific knowledge related to online reading dispositions and factors affecting the occurrence of these dispositions is limited. Therefore, this treatise aims at studying the impact of metacognitive online reading strategies on online reading dispositions. To achieve this goal, the mixed method was employed using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Students’ responses were keyed to AMOS software. The statistical analysis has shown students’ preference for utilizing support strategies to tackle the problems they might face while they engage with online materials. Reflection, as a disposition, was the most frequently reported by students through their responses to the questionnaires. Further, the results confirmed the impact of metacognitive online reading strategies on online reading dispositions, which was the aim of this paper. These findings provide a holistic understanding of the nature of the relationship between metacognition and dispositions, paving the way for further research that touch other aspects of online reading dispositions

The Live Library in Hospitals Project is a strategy adopted by several health institutions for the purpose of providing hospitalized children and adolescents the reading mediation of infant-juvenile stories through professionals and volunteers capable of this function. This study aimed to find out to what extent the reading of stories strategy proposed by this project in hospitals can be a communication resource to use with hospitalized children. In order to do that, empirical data collection was carried out through the use of semi structured interviews with the reader and children above the age of seven years and observation of reading sections. The qualitative data analysis was doing it and it was verified that the reading mediation favors the dialogs and relationships; contribute for the expansion of the diagnostic and therapeutic and development processes of children, relatives and health professionals.

Abstract The present article discusses the notion of translation hacking and attempts to chart the history of this practice in the Arabic context. It also discusses the current practices of translation hacking by examining the work of a well-organized online community of Arab translation hackers called Games in Arabic (GiA). To this end, the study adopts two methods for data collection. First, semi-structured interviews were conducted with the first translation hackers in the Arab world in order to document the history of this practice. Second, a cyberethnographic approach was adopted to collect qualitative data related to GiA, including their translation hacking practices and the technologies used to facilitate their collaborative work. Subsequently, this article attempts to reveal the roles played by the different GiA community members in executing their projects and how they control for quality in their work. Ultimately, the article attempts to provide insights into the practice of Arabic game localization performed by amateur translators, hackers, and gamers, in the hope of adding to current professional and pedagogical practices in Arabic game localization.

The rapid developments throughout language technologies have catered tremendous chances for learning and teaching vocabulary in second language learning. The development of vocabulary knowledge does not merely oscillate in academic vocabulary, high frequency vocabulary and technical vocabulary, English major students should also need to learn low-frequency vocabulary or rare vocabulary which enhance their language proficiency. In order to accommodate students with vocabulary knowledge of rare words, it should come with the best resort of teaching technique that can help them to learn in a meaningful way. One of the rarely used multimedia tools is animated cartoons. This paper aims at exploring the students’ perceptions of using animated cartoons in improving their English vocabulary knowledge of rare words in Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Terengganu. Employing a semi-structured interview, the qualitative data collection method was conducted. Employing the qualitative data collection method, semi-structured interviews were conducted to six students who learned vocabulary using animated cartoons to obtain their perceptions towards these multimedia materials in improving the English vocabulary knowledge of rare words. The results of semi-structured interviews highlighted the positive responses from the students who preferred animated cartoons as these materials in improving their English vocabulary knowledge of rare words. In conclusion, this study contributes to the current literature on English vocabulary learning of rare words by exposing and underlining the impacts of animated cartoons which provide opportunities for students to encounter a conducive technological-based learning environment.

Science and technology are experiencing rapid developments marking the entry of globalization in a country. Globalization has had a major impact, both positive and negative. This globalization affects the lifestyle of the westernized society and reduces the values ​​and nationalism of the Indonesian nation. Education is one of the most effective ways to build good character for the younger generation. This research was conducted using qualitative data collection. It is found that character education has a function as a vehicle for development, improvement, and filter. In addition, character education has other functions, namely developing potential, habits, and behavior, fostering leadership and responsibility, developing abilities and the school environment. Citizenship education has functions including building participatory skills that make Indonesian citizens active, critical, intelligent, and democratic, as well as building a civilized democratic culture. Based on the research, the suggestion that can be given is that there is a need for the involvement of all parties in paying attention and participating in building the character of students as the future generation of the Indonesian nation

ABSTRACTIndonesia is rich in culture and traditional languages, however, the main language remains Indonesian. Talking about Indonesian as the main language to Indonesian as a unifying nation, in its use has increasingly led to the study of the problem of language phenomena for Indonesian language management, ranging from students, students, lecturers, to administrators of the central language. All have a role to make the study of linguistic phenomena so that their use is more appropriate. Therefore, researchers want to take part in contributing studies to improve language by conducting research related to one of the language phenomena. The study was conducted to find out and explain linguistic phenomena, especially in the spelling level of Essay FAST 2015. This research is descriptive qualitative. Data collection using techniques (1) data collection (2) identification of language errors in accordance with the level of language (3) ranking errors (4) correcting errors. The results of this study indicate an error in writing capital letters, punctuation, and italics. Based on these findings, the results of the analysis can be a reference material for researchers, educators, and students so that the work created is better.

A pesquisa teve como objetivo identificar a percepção que os egressos de um campus do Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia (IF) localizado na Amazônia possuem sobre a importância do estágio para as suas formações. A pesquisa utilizou-se de entrevistas semiestruturadas e de questionários estruturados para coleta de dados. Os resultados apontaram que o estágio foi uma ferramenta importante para o desenvolvimento das competências profissionais dos egressos e para que os mesmos conheçam os desafios, e ainda, a dinamicidade do mundo do trabalho. Além de contribuiu para o conhecimento das principais dificuldades e deficiências institucionais que devem ser corrigidas. AbstractThe aim of the research was to identify the perception that the graduates of a campus of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology (IF) located in the Amazon have on the importance of the stage for their formations. The research used semi-structured interviews and structured questionnaires for data collection. The results showed that the internship was an important tool for the development of the professional skills of the graduates and that they are aware of the challenges and the dynamism of the world of work. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengentahui tugas pokok Bidang Kaderisasi DPW PKS Jawa Barat, untuk mengetahui proses tahapan dan sistem model kaderisasi PKS yang marhalah (berjenjang), untuk mengetahui dan mendapatkan data dalam memebentuk kader pemimpin Islami Bidang Kaderisasi DPW PKS Jawa Barat. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini ialah deskrptif kualitatif dengan tekinik pengeumpulan data berupa wawancara terstrurktur, observasi, dan studi dokumentasi.. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa model kaderisi dalam menciptakan pemimpin Islami melalui tahapan-tahapan pembinaan kader yang marhalah (berjenjang). Yaitu, Pertama, ta’lim proses pembelajaran yang mana bertujuan para kader diberikan kurikulum kaderisiasi partai. Kedua, Tandzhim yang mana setelah pembelajaran diharapkan para kader dapat mengasah dan mengimplementasikan hasil kurikulum kaderisasi. Ketiga, taqwin para kader harus dapat menginternalisasi ajaran Islam dalam partai maupun kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara. This research was conducted to identify the main tasks of the West Java PKS DPW Cadre Field Division, to find out the stages and stages of the PKS cadre model model that is marhalah (tiered), to find out and obtain data in forming the Islamic leaders cadre of the West Java PKW DPW Cadre. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques in the form of structured interviews, observations, and documentation studies. The results of this study indicate that the cadre model in creating Islamic leaders through the stages of training cadres who are marhalah (tiered). That is, First, ta'lim the learning process in which the cadres aim to be given a party cadre curriculum. Second, Tandzhim which after learning is expected that the cadres can hone and implement the results of the regeneration curriculum. Third, taqwin of cadres must be able to internalize the teachings of Islam in the party and the life of the nation and state.
