The effect of aging treatments on the mechanical behavior of Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al (Ti153) alloy was evaluated in the present study. Properties of the two-step aged specimens were also compared with those of the one-step aged specimens. The second aging treatment, which was performed at 426o°C for 24 h, apparently raised the tensile strength at the expense of the notched tensile strength for the specimens previously aged at 426°C or below. On the other hand, the second-step aging had a minor effect on further hardening of the specimens prior to aging at 538°C and 593°C. In general, theJ-integral value (fracture toughness) had the same trend as that of the notch brittleness of the specimens. Overall, the specimens subjected to the two-step aging treatment did not show any advantage over the specimens subject to one-step aging treatment.

Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn, β-phase titanium alloy, is subjected to study the temperature effects on microstructure and mechanical behavior by using different aging temperature (426 ∼ 600 oC) and high temperature (450oC) notched tensile test. It follows that the highest hardness of Ti-15V-3Cr-3Al-3Sn would be got up to 420 Hv after 426 oC aging. Afterward, the hardness is decreasing with increasing aging temperature. By means of microstructure analyses, it reveals that the narrow and intragranular α-phase precipitates with lamella-shape in the grains at 426 oC aging treatment caused the age hardening of the titanium alloy. Subsequently, the α-phase precipitates were coarsening with increasing the aging temperature and showed the thick morphologies distributed along grain boundaries, which results in overaging. In the notched tensile test at 450oC, the highest notched tensile strength (1160 MPa) is also obtained after 426oC aging treatment, and then decreasing with increasing aging temperature. Its mechanical behavior is different from the room temperature notched tensile test, which demonstrates the lowest notched tensile strength (813 MPa) after 426 oC aging treatment due to the notched embrittlement effect. According to microstructure study, it suggests that the environment temperature effect enhanced the toughness of the alloy and terminated the notched embrittlement effect resulted from the 426oC aging treatment.

In a recent article Helmut Koester argues against the current practice of distinguishing between canonical Gospels, on the one hand, and apocryphal gospels, on the other, and treating the apocryphal gospels as ‘step children’ of New Testament research. Koester maintains that there are a number of the ‘apocryphal’ gospels which ‘belong to a very early stage in the development of gospel literature — a stage that is comparable to the sources which were used by the gospels of the New Testament.’ One of those texts to which he points is the Nag Hammadi tractate the Apocryphon of James. This paper is an attempt to legitimize one ‘step child’ of New Testament scholarship as a valid source for investigating the earliest levels of the Jesus traditions.

In order to understand the crusading movement it has always been necessary to define what was understood by the ‘crusade’ as a religious exercise within the Christian tradition. This attempt to identify the ‘crusade idea’ goes back to the earliest commentators on the First Crusade, but has gained increasing vitality during the last thirty years. It is not a matter of weighing the relative importance of, on the one hand, the religious and, on the other, the secular or political motives, but of describing the content of the nova religio as such. In this sense Erdmann, who first set up the subject as capable of disciplined study, traced the antecedents in socio-religious forms of behaviour without which the Kreuzzugsidee could not have been conceived, regarding it as in its essentials formulated at the launching of the First Crusade, with Jerusalem as only a minor and ancillary target. Alphandéry, to single out another notable contributor to this type of study, diagnosed the dramatic emergence of a distinctive idée de croisade during the very course of the First Crusade, concentrated on the deliverance of the Holy Places, a unique experience never to be wholly repeated. Another notion of the ‘crusade’ was developed by Rousset—an institution de salut with its characteristic ideology, entertained generally during the first half of the twelfth century.5 There are studies also of the ideas associated with crusading in the crusade appeals, preaching, justification and criticism of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, in the forms of procedure, and in Latin and vernacular poetry.

The present study aims to quantify the properties of Ga-bearing near-titanium alloys in order to aid the future design of new compositions with Ga addition. The effect of different amounts of Sn and Ga, with an almost constant value in the Al equivalent without the formation of 2 phase, on microstructure, tensile strength and Charpy impact toughness was investigated at room temperature and 650°C. The microstructures after forging, hot rolling and heat treatment showed a bimodal structure. Increasing Ga decreased the 0.2% proof stress at 650°C. However, these alloys showed similar impact value at room temperature which was about 40 J/cm2. Increasing the amount of Ga increased the volume fraction of the equiaxed phase. The amount of Ga had only a minor effect on grain size, misorientation angles and grain aspect ratios of the alloy. However, Ga addition had a strong influence on the evolution of texture. Formation of <10-10> and <10-11> || normal direction (ND) fibers were observed in the Ga added samples, in addition to <0001> || ND fiber with a weak <10-11> || ND fiber. The Ga-free sample contained a strong <0001> || ND fiber. Other fibers were not observed.

Serious attempts to estimate the impact of allergic reactions to foods on public health did not begin until the 1980s. Until about 15 years ago, food allergy was considered a minor aspect of food safety. Two developments probably prompted a radical re-appraisal of that situation. The first was the apparently inexorable rise in the prevalence of atopic diseases, of which food allergy forms a part, with its possible consequences highlighted by some well publicised severe reactions. The second was the growth of genetic modification technology, manifested by the commercialization of transgenic crops. Each of these developments impacted on the food industry in distinct ways. On the one hand, food-allergic consumers had to be enabled to avoid specific allergens in products formulated with existing ingredients. Food manufacturers therefore had to identify those specific allergens down to trace amounts in all the ingredients forming the product, and label or remove them. On the other hand, the introduction of products using ingredients from novel sources required an assessment of the allergenicity of these ingredients as an integral part of safety assurance. The approaches used by the food industry to protect existing allergic consumers and those at potential risk of sensitization by novel proteins will be illustrated, emphasizing how they need to be built into every stage of the life cycle of a product.

We investigate how the property of null-recurrence is preserved for Markov chains under a perturbation of the transition probability. After recalling some useful criteria in terms of the one-step transition nucleus we present two methods to determine barrier functions, one in terms of taboo potentials for the unperturbed Markov chain, and the other based on Taylor's formula.

AbstractIn the growth of thin films of compound semiconductors on (001) silicon substrates by vapor deposition techniques, it is usual to employ a two-step process. In this method, an initial (buffer) layer is first grown at a relatively low temperature; once a continuous film has formed on the substrate, its temperature is raised for the subsequent bulk growth. Carrying out the growth in a one-step process by heating the substrate to the final temperature before allowing the gases into the CVD reactor usually results in a polycrystalline aggregate. In this paper, classical nucleation and growth mechanisms are used to explain-the reasons for the different morphology of the one-step and two-step growth films. The heteroepitaxial films on (001) silicon often contain a high density of stacking faults and twins. The occurrence of these planar defects is usually attributed to stresses that arise from lattice mismatch and/or thermal mismatch (differences in coefficients of thermal expansion) between the substrate and the epilayer. It is argued that, in fact, mismatch stresses play a minor role in the generation of planar defects. Instead, an alternative mechanism for their formation is proposed which is based on the facetted shape of nuclei and errors in stacking of {111} planes which occur during deposition on the facets.Conventional and high resolution transmission electron microscopy have been used to investigate three systems grown by CVD or MOCVD: SiC/Si, GaAs/Si and GaP/Si. These systems have different lattice and thermal mismatches, and the results support the proposed model for the formation of defects.

Self-translation is a phenomenon which has always been present, most of all in those sociocultural systems characterized by both their linguistic and cultural richness. One of those is the Spanish peninsular system where more and more bilingual authors tend to write their works in a minor language and subsequently translate them into Spanish. The aim of this paper is to research Xuan Bello’s self-translated poetry from Asturian into Spanish. That way it will be considered whether selftranslation helps this author-translator: on the one hand, to transfer his cultural demands; on the other hand, to define his individual identity. Keywords: self-translation, poetry, Asturian, Spanish, culture, identity.

Titanium alloys are widely used in the aircraft industry. Under sheets form, they can be employed to the manufacturing of pylon or engine parts. With the aim of a cost reduction, this study proposes to act on the starting microstructure so as to improve the mechanical properties during the forming stages. In the present study, investigations are focused on Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo (Ti6242) alloy specially used for the hot areas (e.g. parts close to the engine or the combustion chambe...). Presently, an important mechanical test campaign was performed on Ti6242 alloy, it examines, on the one hand, the microstructure qualified by the aircraft industry and, on the other hand, a new range of refined microstructures obtained by hot straining process. For each test, microstructural observations exhibited complex phenomena including simultaneously both grain growth and dynamic recrystallization. The occurrence, sequencing and coupling of the mechanisms, strongly depend on the starting microstructure and the test conditions (time-temperature and strain rate) investigated. They are not easy to understand and require further tests and observations. In such a framework, the implementation of mechanical models are efficient and relevant to promote a better knowledge of the microstructural evolution observed and their influence on the mechanical behavior.
