The existence and stability of subharmonic oscillations in a two end-fixed fluid conveying pipe whose base is subjected to a harmonic excitation are investigated. A Galerkin approach is utilized to reduce the equation of motion to a second order nonlinear differential equation. The conditions for the existence of subharmonic oscillations are given by using Melnikov method. The stability of subharmonic oscillations is discussed in detail by using action-angle variable and averaging method. It is shown that the velocity of fluid plays an important role in the stability of subharmonic oscillations.

The subharmonic and chaotic behavior of a two end-fixed fluid conveying pipe whose base is subjected to a harmonic excitation are investigated. Melnikov method is applied for the system, and Melnikov criterions for subharmonic and homoclinic bifurcations are obtained analytically. The numerical simulations (including bifurcation diagrams, maximal Lyapunov exponents, phase portraits and Poincare map) confirm the analytical predictions and exhibit the complicated dynamical behaviors.

The chaotic behavior of a carbon nanotube with waviness along its axis is investigated. The equation of motion involves a quadratic and cubic terms due to the curved geometry and the mid-plane stretching. Melnikov method is applied for the system, and Melnikov criterion for global homoclinic bifurcations is obtained analytically. The numerical solution of the system using a fourth-order-Runge–Kutta method confirms the analytical predictions and shows that the transition from regular to chaotic motion is often associated with increasing the energy of an oscillator. Moreover, a detailed numerical study of the periodic attractor in the period window is also carried out.

In this paper, the continuation technique is used to investigate the non-linear response of a suspended cable under harmonic excitation. A modified iteration procedure is applied to the nonlinear oscillator containing a quadratic term. From the formulated mathematical model of the suspended cable, the solution for the cable is obtained by means of the mixed averaging method. Also we can give the frequency simple with the modified iteration procedure. Moreover, the results obtained by this method and the numerical integration are compared. Also the offset is studied. Finally, the effects of the amplitude of the harmonic excitation on the suspended cable and the stability of the system are investigated.

Abstract The transverse vibrating motion of a simple beam with one end fixed while driven harmonically along its axial direction from the other end is investigated. For a special case of zero value for the rigidity of the beam, the system reduces to that of a vibrating string with the corresponding equation of its motion. The sufficient condition for the periodic solution of the beam is then derived by means of the Green’s function and Schauder’s fixed point theorem. The criteria for the stability of the system is well defined and the condition for which the performance of the beam behaves as a nonlinear function is stated.

The equation of motion of a long slender beam submerged in an infinite fluid moving with constant speed is derived using Hamilton’s principle. The upstream end of the beam is pinned and the downstream end is free to move. The resulting equation of motion is then used to perform the stability analysis of a string, i.e., a beam with negligible bending stiffness. It is found that the string is stable if (a) the external tension at the free end exceeds the value of a U2, where a is the “added mass” of the string and U the fluid speed; or (b) the length-over-diameter ratio exceeds the value 2Cf/π, where Cf is the frictional coefficient of the string.

Parametric vibrations occur in many mechanical systems such as gears where the stiffness variation and external excitations generally occur at integer multiples of the rotational speed. This paper describes a procedure based on the Ritz Averaging Method for developing closed form solutions for the response of such systems to harmonic excitations. Although the method is illustrated in the paper by the case of a linear system with harmonic stiffness fluctuation (defined by Mathieu’s equation) it can be readily applied to determine approximate solutions for systems with nonlinear characteristics and any periodic variations of parameters.

This paper investigates the existence and stability of Einstein universe in the context of f(R, T, Q) gravity, where Q = R[Formula: see text] T[Formula: see text]. Considering linear homogeneous perturbations around scale factor and energy density, we formulate static as well as perturbed field equations. We parametrize the stability regions corresponding to conserved as well as non-conserved energy–momentum tensor using linear equation of state parameter for particular models of this gravity. The graphical analysis concludes that for a suitable choice of parameters, stable regions of the Einstein universe are obtained which indicates that the big bang singularity can be avoided successfully by the emergent mechanism in non-minimal matter-curvature coupled gravity.

In this work we study a system of two van der Pol oscillators, x and y, coupled via a “bath” z: x¨−ε(1−x2)x˙+x=k(z−x)y¨−ε(1−y2)y˙+y=k(z−y)z˙=k(x−z)+k(y−z) We investigate the existence and stability of the in-phase and out-of-phase modes for parameters ε > 0 and k > 0. To this end we use Floquet theory and numerical integration. Surprisingly, our results show that the out-of-phase mode exists and is stable for a wider range of parameters than is the in-phase mode. This behavior is compared to that of two directly coupled van der Pol oscillators, and it is shown that the effect of the bath is to reduce the stability of the in-phase mode. We also investigate the occurrence of other periodic motions by using bifurcation theory and the AUTO bifurcation and continuation software package. Our motivation for studying this system comes from the presence of circadian rhythms in the chemistry of the eyes. We present a simplified model of a circadian oscillator which shows that it can be modeled as a van der Pol oscillator. Although there is no direct connection between the two eyes, they can influence each other by affecting the concentration of melatonin in the bloodstream, which is represented by the bath in our model.

Abstract The present study generalises previous research work on the dynamics of discrete oscillators with piecewise linear characteristics and investigates the response of a continuous model system with clearance and motion-limiting constraints. More specifically, in the first part of this work, an analysis is presented for determining exact periodic response of a periodically excited deformable rod, whose motion is constrained by a flexible obstacle. This methodology is based on the exact solution form obtained within response intervals where the system parameters remain constant and its behavior is governed by a linear equation of motion. The unknowns of the problem are subsequently determined by imposing an appropriate set of periodicity and matching conditions. The analytical part is complemented by a suitable method for determining the stability properties of the located periodic motions. In the second part of the study, the analysis is applied to several cases in order to investigate the effect of the system parameters on its dynamics. Special emphasis is placed on comparing these results with results obtained for similar but rigid rods. Finally, direct integration of the equation of motion in selected areas reveals the existence of motions, which are more complicated than the periodic motions determined analytically.
