Unimorph cantilever is widely used in many applications with its bending and tip-deflection. In this paper, a model of the cantilever with the applied voltage and tip-deflection is presented. With the use of this model, a prototype, fabricated by VHB and polycarbonate, is estimated for its bending tip-deflection under a high voltage. And the experiment system is established with a signal generator, high voltage amplifier and laser displacement meter. The experimental results and the theoretical ones are both the same. The conclusions in this paper can be used to make further research on the deformation control of structures.

The paper presents the novel HF-GEN method for determining the characteristics of Electrical Appliance (EA) operating in the end-user environment. The method includes a measurement system that uses a pulse signal generator to improve the quality of EA identification. Its structure and the principles of operation are presented. A method for determining the characteristics of the current signals’ transients using the cross-correlation is described. Its result is the appliance signature with a set of features characterizing its state of operation. The quality of the obtained signature is evaluated in the standard classification task with the aim of identifying the particular appliance’s state based on the analysis of features by three independent algorithms. Experimental results for 15 EAs categories show the usefulness of the proposed approach.

This paper proposes a highly simplified optical voltage sensor by using a piezoelectric bimorph and a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) that can be used for high voltage applications with a relatively good accuracy and stability. In this work the theoretical framework for the whole opto-mechanical operation of the optical sensor is detailed and compared to experimental results. In the analysis, a correction term to the electric field is derived to account for the linear strain distribution across the piezoelectric layer improving the designing equations and giving more criteria for future developments. Finally, some experimental results from a laboratory scale optical-based high voltage sensing setup are discussed, and shown to be in excellent agreement with theoretical expected behavior for different voltage magnitudes.

Due to the large increase in the use of precast concrete structures in multistory buildings, this work covers a study on the behavior of beam-column connection with emphasis on the continuity provided by the slab reinforcement. Two prototypes were tested, each one with a different detail of the continuity reinforcement distribution. In both connections, the steel area used on the concrete cover of the hollow core slab was the same, varying the amount of bars that passed through the column and the ones that were placed adjacent to the column. The experimental results showed that the connection with bars adjacent to the column presented stiffness increase and a better cracking control. According to the classification the two tested connections can be considered semi-rigid.

A novel refractometer based on photoelectric sensor technology and differential method is proposed. Sensing principle and mathematical model are introduced; structure and key parameters of sensing probe are designed through detail calculation. Theoretical solution shows resolution reaches order of 10-5. Preliminary experiments verify the feasibility of the design, experimental results show stability error better than ±1.02×10-4, error caused by temperature is 6.65×10-6/°C.

Model tests with five different keels in combination with one particular hull form have been carried out in the Delft Towing Tank. The variations include a plain deep keel, a keel-centre board, a plain restricted draft keel,a "Scheel" keel and a "winglet" keel. Based on the experimental results performance predictions are given for a 63 ft yacht for windspeeds up to 25 knots. The measured side force and resistance as a function of heeling angle, leeway angle and forward speed are used to analyse the relative merits of the considered keel-hull combinations.

To improve the voltage gain of step-up converters, the cascaded technique is considered as a possible solution in this paper. By considering the concept of cascading two Z-source networks in a conventional boost converter, the proposed topology takes the advantages of both impedance source and cascaded converters. By applying some modifications, the proposed converter provides high voltage gain while the voltage stress of the switch and diodes is still low. Moreover, the low input current ripple of the converter makes it absolutely appropriate for photovoltaic applications in expanding the lifetime of PV panels. After analyzing the operation principles of the proposed converter, we present the simulation and experimental results of a 100 W prototype to verify the proposed converter performance.

Blogs are one of the main user-generated contents on the web and are growing in number rapidly. The characteristics of blogs require the development of specialized search methods which are tuned for the blogosphere. In this paper, we focus on blog retrieval, which aims at ranking blogs with respect to their recurrent relevance to a user’s topic. Although different blog retrieval algorithms have already been proposed, few of them have considered temporal properties of the input queries. Therefore, we propose an efficient approach to improving relevant blog retrieval using temporal property of queries. First, time sensitivity of each query is automatically computed for different time intervals based on an initially retrieved set of relevant posts. Then a temporal score is calculated for each blog and finally all blogs are ranked based on their temporal and content relevancy with regard to the input query. Experimental analysis and comparison of the proposed method are carried out using a standard dataset with 45 diverse queries. Our experimental results demonstrate that, using different measurement criteria, our proposed method outperforms other blog retrieval methods.

The drilling burr is taken as the research object. A mathematical model of electrochemical deburring (ECD) is established and the effects of main influencing factors, such as inter-electrode gap, applied voltage and deburring time, on burr height have been analyzed. The results show that the deburring time increases with the increase of initial burr height, inter-electrode gap, with the decrease of volume of electrochemical equivalent of the workpiece material, conductivity of electrolyte and applied voltage. The deburring time for various burr heights can be predicted by the mathematical model. The calculated results obtained from the mathematical model are approximately consistent with the experimental results. The results show that initial burr height h0=0.722mm is removed, and the fillet radius R=0.211mm is obtained.
