Flexible magnetic nanoparticles decorated with dialdehyde starch (DAS) were developed and used as a novel enzyme support for the covalent conjugation of papain. The analyses of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the preparation of magnetic particles with flexible long molecular chains on their surfaces and conjugation of papain with the Fe3O4-DAS nanoparticles. Considering that the immobilized papain was found to exhibit better tolerance to the variations of temperature and medium pH, an advantage of easy to magnetic separation and lack of negative effect on biological activity, the kind of flexible magnetic bioconjugate support should be a good immobilized enzyme carrier, and has potential application in textile, leather, food industries.

The recyclable poly(methacrylic acid) grafted magnetic particles retained excellent aqueous phase dispersibility and high biological activity against bacteria when loaded with an antibiotic. The particles were removed from water solutions using a magnet after antimicrobial testing, thus avoiding nano-based pollution of the biological environment.

In recent years, a large amount of emulsified oily wastewaters were produced from petroleum and food industries, resulting in severe environmental problems. In this study, a series of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-coated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were prepared via one-step solvothermal method by introducing various amounts or types of PVP. The synthesized MNPs were characterized by multiple techniques, and their demulsification performances were evaluated in petrochemical and vegetable oil wastewaters, respectively. Results showed that the introduction of PVP in solvothermal process could significantly enhance the demulsification efficiency of MNPs, although excessive addition of PVP could not further increase its efficiency. Moreover, the effects of pH, surfactant concentration of wastewater, and the recycle number of MNPs on the demulsification performance were investigated in detail. It was found that the demulsification efficiency decreased with the increase of pH and surfactant concentration, and the synthetic MNPs were still effective after being reused for 5 cycles under acidic and neutral conditions. It is expected that the development of the PVP-coated MNPs can provide a simple and powerful route for the oily wastewater treatment.

Fe3O4/chitosan magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by chemical cross-linking technique, using dialdehyde starch as a crosslinker, and the adsorption performance of the adsorbent toward Hg2+ was investigated. The adsorption capacity of mercury ions was greatly affected by pH value, adsorption doses and adsorption time. Results indicated that optimal adsorption conditions were pH value, 6, adsorption doses, 140 mg.L-1, adsorption time, 20 min, and the adsorption capacity was 25.12 mg.g-1. The well-defined nanoparticles with a uniform distribution were observed.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) play an important role in the growth and development of plants. Herein, we describe the synthesis of epimeric mixtures of BR analogs with 24-norcholane type side chains, S/R configuration at C22 and A/B ring cis-type fusion. All epimeric mixtures were synthetized from hyodeoxycholic acid. The biological activity of mixtures was evaluated by using rice lamina inclination test and germination of tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) seeds. The results show that these epimeric mixtures exhibit similar bioactivity to brassinolide in both bioassays. Thus, our results corroborate that the A/B junction has almost no effect on bioactivity and open the possibility of using epimeric mixtures instead of pure compounds. In this approach, the synthesized BR analogs maintain a good level of bioactivity, whereas the synthesis is shorter, cheaper and with higher yields. All these factors make this alternative very interesting for potential application.
