In order to know seismic damage characteristics of multi-story brick masonry structure and improve its seismic capability, five kinds of earthquake damage or collapse forms of multi-story masonry brick structure are summed up based on earthquake disaster survey, each of which is analyzed with mechanics. And the failure mechanism of each seismic damage form of multi-story brick masonry structure are proposed, which provides effective engineering experience for the seismic or anti-collapse design of multi-story masonry brick structure. The research has the important significance in improving the seismic capacity of multi-story brick masonry structure and reducing the earthquake casualties.

Single-story brick column workshops are widely used as the production or storage room of medium and small-sized enterprises in China. Based on the field investigation of single-story brick column workshops at the earthquake-affected area after Lushan 7.0 earthquake, the damage characteristics of workshops are summed up. Damage prediction analyses are carried out for two typical single-story brick column workshops, and failure mechanism researches are conducted by using ABAQUS finite element software for a workshop. Finally, according to the results of failure mechanism researches, some relevant suggestions of the seismic reinforcement are put forward.

The seismic damage and loss of service of pipeline engineering may have great influence on the society, so the seismic research of pipeline engineering had always been highly valued. In this paper, the seismic damage characteristics of pipeline and vulnerability of water pipeline system in Wenchuan earthquake are analyzed, some revelations have been presented. The seismic capacity of pipeline engineering in some towns and cities was not adequate, the pipeline systems suffered great losses in Wenchuan Earthquake, and effective seismic countermeasures should be considered in design and construction of water pipeline system in order to improve this situation.

China is one of the countries with the most serious earthquake disaster in the world. Buildings damaged and collapsed caused by earthquakes are the main reason of the economic loss and casualties. Most of non-engineered buildings are self-built houses, which occupy a considerable proportion in damaged buildings during earthquakes. It is significant to statistic and to analyze these house damage data in former earthquakes for the seismic capacity evaluation of the non-engineered buildings. The main types of non-engineered buildings are wood house, earth and wood house, brick and wood house, and brick masonry house. It is the seismogenic zone provinces for Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu and Yunnan in China. Based on the four type houses in the four provincial regions. The article focused on the 105 reports of earthquake disaster selected from 1990 and 2013. And then the article demonstrated that the average damage ratio of different house types in these four provincial regions. Through the comparing of the average damage ratio of the same house types in the four regions, it is clearly to understanding the seismic capacity of these types of non-engineered buildings in the different regions.

Damage data of 52 masonry structures in Yuxi Village which is the macroscopic epicenter of Ms 7.0 LuShan strong earthquake were summarized and analyzed to study basic seismic capacity of the rural residence in Southwest China, and the following conclusions were obtained: summarized structural features of the main rural residence structure in Southwest China that exemplified by Yuxi Village; summarized damage characteristics of masonry structure in Yuxi Village, given brief analysis of its damage causes and provided reinforcement and improvement suggestions according to the corresponding damage characteristics; analyzed general damage characteristics of the village houses in the macroscopic level based on statistically analyze seismic site survey data. The basic seismic capacity of rural residential status in Southwest China is initially grasped, and it has important reference value to understand of the damage characteristics of various types of structure, the development of earthquake disaster mitigation planning and revision of seismic design code.

Non-engineered buildings are most of self-built house, which locate in rural area in China. The structural defect of non-engineered buildings could reduce seismic capacity. The damage of these buildings are the main cause of earthquakes casualties and economic losses. The main types of the building structures include the wooden house, soil and wood house, brick and wood house and masonry house. It is the seismogenic provincial regions for Xinjiang, Qinghai, Gansu and Yunnan in China. Based on the four type houses in the four regions, 104 earthquake disaster loss reports were selected from 1990 and 2013. This article focused on the analysis of house damage data. This article proposes "the average damage ratio" concept, which takes one provincial region as an area and studies the whole area data. Due to a combination of multiple and differenteffects of earthquakes within one provincial region, the average damage ratio can be on behalf of the damage ratio, and reflects the non-engineered building characteristics in the provincial region. And then the article demonstrates that the earthquake damage matrix of different house types in these four provinces area. The earthquake damage matrix provides a more reliable basis for the earthquake disaster evaluation in rural area.

Wenchuan earthquake caused huge losses in rural areas. The subject briefly introduced the earthquake damage characteristics of masonry structures, analyzed the earthquake damage reasons. The main purpose is to propose some measures to improve the seismic capacity of rural buildings in Beijing area. Through two seismic fortification measures, can effectively enhance the integrity of the masonry structure, reduce the seismic response, effectively improve the seismic capacity of the structure.

Abstract: The elastic modulus values of masonry were studied by using homogenization with microscopic mechanics. The formulate of the elastic modulus of brick masonry were derived from the formulae of the elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio of brick and mortar. The calculated results according to the methods agreed better with our current national codes and the frequently-used formulas. This has paved the way for the study of the failure mechanism of masonry ,and make the analysis of masonry structure more accurate more and convenient.

Bottom-business multi-story masonry structure is widely used in small and middle towns in the southward in China. In the downtown of Beichuan county which affected by Wenchuan earthquake, more than 80% of this kind of building collapsed. But the Apartment of Beichuan Telecommunication Bureau behaved well earthquake resistant capacity with a moderate damage in the earthquake. The obvious difference between this building and others is the setting of winged columns in the front longitudinal wall of the first floor. For proving the influence of these members in the structure seismic capacity, the earthquake simulation shaking table test of 2 1/5 reduced scale models were designed and carried out. The models dynamic response, acceleration, displacement and strain were measured and collected, that model with winged columns behave well was testified. And the reinforcement method of balancing stiffness and increasing ductility is put forward. The results provide a foundation for the retrofitting design of the existing houses.
