VC/Fe composite samples were fabricated by sintering at 1050, 1100 and 1150°C in vacuum. The microstructure and mechanical properties of samples were examined, and the relationship of structure and mechanical properties for VC/Fe composite sintered at different temperature were studied. The results show that fracture toughness, hardness and density is increasing obviously at 1050-1100°Cwith the increasing sintering temperature, but the growth trend increases slowly at 1100-1150°C; in whole process with temperature increased, Flexure strength heighten trend obviously. The microstructure of VC/Fe composite changed from particles piled up together to the microstructure particles closely, VC particles set gradually into Fe with temperature increased, and the gap reduced gradually.

VC/Fe-based composite samples were fabricated with different volume fraction of VC in vacuum, and the content are 40%, 55%, and 70% respectively. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties for VC/Fe based composite with various VC content were studied. The results indicated VC content had a significant effect on the performance and organization of the VC/Fe-based composites and the effect of VC content on the mechanical properties are varied. With ratio of VC powders increased, the volume fraction of V8C7 particles formed additionally, while the fraction of Fe particles slightly decreased. The flexural strength, fracture toughness, relative density and wear resistant increased with increase of VC content in the range of 0 to 55vol. %, and then decreased with further increase of VC content, while the Vickers hardness increased with the increase of VC content. By comparing the material with 55vol.%VC would show the best combination of properties in the prepared samples.

Ti(C,N)/Fe composites samples were fabricated in vacuum and Ti(C,N) content was respectively 20vol.%, 30vol.% and 40vol.%. The relationship of microstructure and mechanical properties for Ti(C,N)/Fe composites with various Ti(C,N) content were studied. The results indicated that the flexural strength and wear resistant increased with increasing the content of Ti(C,N)in the range of 0 to 30vol.%, then decreased with further increase of Ti(C,N) content, and the fracture toughness decreases with increasing Ti(C,N) content integrally, while the Vickers hardness increased with the increase of Ti(C,N) content. The microstructure of Ti(C,N)/Fe composites is uniform, fine grains, and grains combine more closely with Ti(C,N) 30vol.%. By comparing the properties of the material was relatively good with Ti(C,N) 30vol.% at 1300°C.

Al2O3-TiC-ZrO2ceramic composites (ATZ) were fabricated by hot-pressed sintering. The phases and microstructure of the composites were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The relative density and mechanical properties (flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vicker’s hardness) of the composites were tested. The results show that the microstructure of the composites was the gray core-white rim. With the increase of sintering temperature, the relative density and mechanical properties of the composites increased first and then decreased. The composite sintered at 1705°C has the highest synthetical properties, and its relative density, flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness are 98.3%,970MPa,6.0 MPa•m1/2and 20.5GPa, respectively.

In this paper, a new type of Ti3SiC2/Cu composites with the volume fractions of 30% Ti3SiC2 particle was prepared by hot pressing and vacuum sintering respectively. The effects of sintering temperature and holding time on the density, resistance and Vickers hardness of Cu-30vol%Ti3SiC2 composite were investigated. The results show that the mechanical properties of the composites prepared by hot pressing are better than that prepared by vacuum sintering. The relative densities of Cu-30vol% Ti3SiC2 composites are rather high in suitable sintering conditions. It achieved 100% for the composites prepared by hot pressing at 930°C for 2h, and 98.4% for the composites prepared by vacuum sintering at 1250°C for 1h. At the same time, the maximum Vickers hardness reached 1735MPa at 900°C by hot pressing. The resistance and Vickers hardness of the composites decreased with an increase in sintering temperature, whereas the density increased. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to observe the microstructure of the composites. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties was discussed.

The WC composite powder was synthesized by a new specific chemical activation technique. A large number of lattice defects such as surface humps, dislocations and stacking fault exist in the surface of the WC powder after chemical activation technique. By using such activated WC powder, the binderless WC cemented carbide with high density (15.54 g/cm3), super hardness (average 26.29 GPa) and excellent fracture toughness (8.9 MPa.m1/2) can be fabricated by SPS at 1700 °C and 50 MPa pressure. The improvement in density, hardness and fracture toughness are respectively 4.5%, 15.3% and 17.1% compared to when using the original WC powder. This improvement is because microscopic defects on the surface of the WC powder can greatly improve surface free energy of the powder, which improves the sintering activity and reduces the sintering temperature of the WC powder.

The evolution of snow and glacier research in Switzerland is outlined. The settling, creep, viscosity and slipping of the snow cover are discussed in detail and the relationship of these comparatively simple processes to the more complex movements in a glacier are described. The importance of further research in glacier physics in connection with the crystallographic and mechanical properties of ice is stressed; certain preliminary laboratory experiments and some subjects for further research in the field are suggested. The Great Aletsch Glacier is recommended for this owing to the proximity of the Jungfraujoch Research Institute and facilities for transport by the Jungfraujoch Railway.

Since the very first production trials, it was evident that semi-solid components exhibit excellent mechanical properties, comparable to those of forged material and, in any case, better than permanent mold castings. Over the years, these findings have been confirmed by many authors. Most of the papers available in scientific literature deals with the demonstration of this improvement, especially in order to show the reliability of new and alternative production routes. On the contrary, only some studies focus their attention on the relationship between enhanced mechanical properties and the microstructure. However, it is demonstrated that the increased performance of semi-solid components is not only due to the absence of porosity, but there is a clear relationship between microstructure and properties. This paper reports about the state of knowledge in this subject, in particular for what concerns tensile, fatigue, wear and corrosion resistance.
