Among the multitude of problems existing in the fast urbanizing towns and cities in Nigeria, Solid waste appears to be the most prominent in recent years. Solid waste is seen in huge heaps on any piece of unused land, around buildings and in the open market places. Living with solid waste littered around appears to be an acceptable way of life among the people in most cities in Nigeria in recent years. The work reported in this paper involves a preliminary study of residential solid waste management in the Lagos metropolis in Nigeria. A site-specific study was carried out to estimate the quantity of residential solid waste generation, disposal and management in the metropolis. Structured questionnaires were applied to collect primary information such as size of households, income, Educational level etc. from households. The results obtained indicated that the problem of insufficient available data, insufficient funding, poor understanding of solid waste management by the PSP operators and poor publics attitude are the causes of solid waste crisis in Nigeria. Proposal on strategies for the improvement of the effectiveness of the PSP operators in Lagos metropolis has been presented.

Managing Solid Waste is always a challenge for any developing nations due to poor infrastructure and awareness. The emergency situation due to COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the dynamics of solid waste generation globally. However, its impact varies from developed world to developing nation. Multiple knowledge gaps exist regarding the containment of waste during pandemic situation in developing nation. For overcoming health crisis, a multifaceted coordinated approach between civic authorities, policymakers and scientific community is required. Therefore, present review article highlights the challenges associated with solid waste management and role of policymakers in combating pandemic strategically.

Solid waste management in any large urban city like Lahore requires special disposal measures. In thisregard, Lakhodair landfill and Mehmood booti dump sites collect and handle major bulk of all the solid waste comingfrom ten towns of Lahore, with the city’s waste generation rate of being 0.84kg/capita per day. Spatial expanse of boththe sites was calculated in Arc GIS 10.3 system. The findings clearly showed that the extent of both these dump siteshad increased during 2006-2016 due to an enormous rise in solid waste generation. During 2006, the area of MehmoodBooti dump site and Lakhodair Landfill site was only 15 hectares and 17 hectares respectively. By 2016, this area hadincreased to 32 hectares and 52 hectares respectively. The mapping of these two sites can help in future researchesbased on investigating the disease patterns among people residing around these sites and by determining methaneemissions in the study area.

Abstract Chilean legislation dictates that Municipalities are responsible for household solid waste management, but this doesn’t include the clean-up of illegal dumpsites. These in-city dumpsites usually are located on public roads, parks or abandoned sites; have a wide variety of origins, from household trash to business waste, and feature a high component of construction debris. One of the main problems that municipalities have managing these sites is that when they are cleaned, the dumpsites immediately reappear. Therefore, a site survey and visual characterization was performed for these illegal dumpsites at the Municipality of La Granja, and a cost analysis associated with the constant clean-up costs was performed. La Granja Municipality has an established clean-up program with a frequency that varies from one to three withdrawals a week per dumpsite. Santiago is Chile's capital and is divided into 32 municipalities, the general population of the city is 5.250.565 habitants according to the 2017 census. La Granja is one of Santiago’s municipalities; according to the last census, it has 116.571 inhabitants and a total of 34.423 households divided into 69 neighbourhoods. The social economical income of the municipality corresponds to medium low to lower level. The study detected 35 critical sites that were catalogued as recuring dumpsites. The mayor cause of these dumpsites corresponds to illegal dumping of construction waste, mayor appliance and household waste, and only one dumpsite didn’t present construction debris during the length of the study. The average volume measured in site, for most of the dumpsites varied from 1 to 3 m3 and only 2 sites exceeded 8 m3. The most important characteristics of the dumpsites were the ease accessibility (82,4%), followed by the total lack of public illumination, high vehicular traffic and to or more intersections (67,7%). The equipment and personnel cost were estimated for the clean-up service of the 35 dumpsites. The cost analysis showed that the associated cost of the clean-up corresponds to a 5,8% of the municipal budget for solid waste management. As a result of the study, 4 sites were intervened through the generation of green area or small parks, with an emphasis in the protection or blocking of the access and roadside.

Purpose Due to the increasing population and prosperity, the generation rate of municipal solid waste (MSW) has increased significantly, resulting in serious problems on public health and the environment. Every single person in the world is affected by the municipal solid waste management (MSWM) issue. MSWM is reaching a critical level in almost all areas of the world and seeking the development of MSW strategies for a sustainable environment. This paper aims to present the existing global status of MSW generation, composition, management and related problems. Design/methodology/approach A total of 59 developed and developing countries have been grouped based on their gross national income to compare the status of various MSWM technologies among them. A total of 19 selection criteria have been discussed to select appropriate MSWM technology(s) for a city/town, which affects their applicability, operational suitability and performance. All risks and challenges arising during the life cycle of the waste to energy (WtE) project have also been discussed. This paper also gives a comparative overview of different globally accepted MSWM technologies and the present market growth of all WtE technologies. Findings It was found that most developed countries have effectively implemented the solid waste management (SWM) hierarchy and are now focusing heavily on reducing, reusing and recycling of MSW. On the other hand, SWM has become very serious in low-income and low-middle-income countries because most of the MSW openly dumps and most countries are dependent on inadequate waste infrastructure and the informal sector. There are also some other major challenges related to effective waste policies, availability of funds, appropriate technology selection and adequacy of trained people. This study clears the picture of MSW generation, composition, management strategies and policies at the worldwide context. This manuscript could be valuable for all nations around the world where effective MSWM has not yet been implemented. Originality/value This study clears the picture of solid waste generation, composition, management strategies and policies at the worldwide context. This manuscript could be valuable for all nations around the world where effective MSWM has not yet been implemented. In this study, no data was generated. All supporting data were obtained from previously published papers in journals, the outcomes of the international conferences and published reports by government organizations.

This study analyzes the Iligan City Solid Waste Management as the basis for an effective Solid Waste Management Program. It was conducted among 1593 respondents from Barangays Maria Cristina, Del Carmen, San Miguel, San Roque, and Tubod. The research design is descriptive and employs a triangulation of quantitative and qualitative methods of data gathering and analysis. Data gathering was made with the use of a researcher-made questionnairethat measured the respondent’s level of knowledge and implementation of Recycling, Reducing, Reusing, and Composting solid waste.The data were statistically processed to get the frequency, percentage and mean. It was further analyzed with Kendall’s tau-b and Pearson Moment Correlation to determine the relationship between variables. The results show that the socioeconomic profile of the respondents has a relationship with the respondents’ Knowledge and Implementation of Solid Waste. All the socioeconomic profile of the respondents has a significant relationship with their knowledge on solid waste management, except for the gender of the respondents. Age has a significant relationship with composting; gender with reduction of solid waste generation and composting; family income and educational attainment with recycling, reduction, and reusing.   Keywords - Solid waste management; 3 r’s of solid waste management: recycle, reduce, reuse; composting, Iligan City, Philippines

Solid waste management is considered a pressing global issue calling for an immediate response from the government and its people. The Philippines has a continuously rising amount of waste and is expected to further increase in the succeeding years. As reviewed, associated problems with solid waste management in the country include an increasing amount of solid waste, weak law implementation, scarcity of sanitary landfills, and improper disposal. The ultimate solution existing in the country is the RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 which highlights the practices of segregation, proper disposal, and waste diversion. The importance of envisioning a trash-free Philippines and encouraging people’s participation and awareness is also emphasized. Another possible solution to solid waste management is valorization which can also address other environmental problems such as the depletion of natural resources. These solutions enumerated will only be possible with the presence of good governance, active participation of the people of the country, and the cooperation of all constituents and agencies in the Philippines.

Solid waste problem is happen in many big city, such as Surabaya City. Jemur Wonosari which is participant in Surabaya Green and Clean (SGC) program also have waste management problems. When SGC was conducted, solid waste management is good. However, after the program finished, solid waste management facilities was neglected. In this research we measured solid waste measurement in waste generation and composition from domestic and non-domestic. Also to survey the level of community participation in manage solid waste. The design is quantitative research, data getting from measurement of waste generation and composition also question data to know community participation level in waste management which influenced by internal factors (knowledge, motivation, and environment attitude).The result of research, waste from people in a day is 0,093 kg/person/day. The result of solid waste generation which produced by the community is about 2054,37 kg/day. Waste composition which dominated by food waste, it’s about 43,3%. From the X2 test explain that there is a relation between knowledge, motivation, and environment attitude to community participation and between community participation to solid waste management. The community need to improve composting activities to minimize waste and rise up community participation.

Traditional markets are commercial areas that produce household-type solid waste so that the generation, composition, and the characteristics of the solid waste in Kepanjen Market will be different. This research is related to the reduction potential to improve solid waste management with the aim of determining the generation, composition, characteristics, collection and the transportation of the solid waste. The data used in this study include operational technical solid waste data, as well as secondary data such as area, number of traders, solid waste management resources, collection facilities, transportation routes, supporting maps. Solid waste generation calculation uses load-count analysis method. Calculation of solid waste composition uses the crossroad method. Calculation of physical characteristics includes specific gravity of solid waste. Calculation of transportation of solid waste uses the Hauled Container System method. Mass balance is analyzed using recovery factor values. The results of the analysis show that the solid waste generation average is 2.94 m3/day, with a specific gravity of 190.03 kg/m3. The highest composition of solid waste is food solid waste by 28.67% and vegetable and fruit solid waste by 22.67%. These components can be used as compost raw materials. The potential reduction with the mass balance method shows that the residue is 201.49 kg/day, reduction scenario can reduce solid waste by 36.06% of the total load that must be transported to the Final Processing Site. The solid waste transport result with the capacity/size of 6-10 m3 of a transport vehicle (arm roll truck) shows that the effective working hours for 8 hours can pick up the solid waste in 1 trip, and the transport fleet can serve other markets.
