In order to study the effect of the raw material’s properties to the HMA’s pavement performance, the asphalt, coarse aggregate and fine aggregate are studied. The test results show that: the modified asphalt content is more than the base asphalt with the same aggregate and gradation. The former’s pavement performance is obviously better than the latter’s. The granite mixture’s asphalt content is less than the gabbro mixture. Their high and low temperature performances are in the same level, but the former’s water stability is worse.

The performance of asphalt concrete mixed with 3 types of fine aggregate respectively (i.e. natural sand, limestone, basalt) are compared. The results of Marshall test and rutting test show that the high temperature performance of asphalt mixture mixed with basalt is the best, that of asphalt mixture mixed with natural sand is the worst, and that of asphalt mixture mixed with limestone is between the above two. The result of immersion Marshall test show that the water stability of asphalt mixture mixed with basalt and that of asphalt mixture mixed with limestone are similar, but better than that of asphalt mixture mixed with natural sand. Therefore, it indicates that the machine-made aggregate (of basalt or limestone) have better pavement performance and environment benefit than the natural sand.

This study has investigated the impact of graphene oxide (GO) in enhancing the performance properties of an asphalt binder. The control asphalt binder (60/70 PEN) was blended with GO in contents of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5%. The permanent deformation behavior of the modified asphalt binders was evaluated based on the zero shear viscosity (ZSV) parameter through a steady shear test approach. Superpave fatigue test and the linear amplitude sweep (LAS) method were used to evaluate the fatigue behavior of the binders. A bending beam rheometer (BBR) test was conducted to evaluate the low-temperature cracking behavior. Furthermore, the storage stability of the binders was investigated using a separation test. The results of the ZSV test showed that GO considerably enhanced the steady shear viscosity and ZSV value, showing a significant contribution of the GO to the deformation resistance; moreover, GO modification changed the asphalt binder’s behavior from Newtonian to shear-thinning flow. A notable improvement in fatigue life was observed with the addition of GO to the binder based on the LAS test results and Superpave fatigue parameter. The BBR test results revealed that compared to the control asphalt, the GO-modified binders showed lower creep stiffness (S) and higher creep rate (m-value), indicating increased cracking resistance at low temperatures. Finally, the GO-modified asphalt binders exhibited good storage stability under high temperatures.

The objective of the study is to investigate the potential of using Porous Concrete Paving Blocks (PCPB) as a part of paving surface. Laboratory tests were conducted to compare and examine the effect of particle sizes of coarse aggregate. Two coarse aggregate sizes were selected; passing 8 mm retains 5 mm and passing 10 mm retains 8 mm. The fine aggregate was eliminated from mixes. The water to cement ratio used was 0.35. Compressive strength and skid resistance tests were performed to evaluate the properties of PCPB. The test results indicated that there was a reduction in the strength when coarse aggregate at different size was used. Scanning electron microscopy showed that voids, poor bonding and lack of adhesion at the boundaries of the aggregate with cement paste contributing to the low PCPB strength. However, both PCPB specimens provide 30 % to 40 % increase in skid resistance compared to Concrete Paving Blocks (CPB).

the influence of mixing amount of mineral admixture, volume content of fine and coarse aggregate have been systematical studied on the workability, mechanical properties and volume stability of self-compacting concrete. Test results showed that with the fly ash content increased, the workability of self-compacting concrete improved significantly, early compressive strength decreased, but increase rate of later strength improved remarkably, and the mixing amount of fly ash inhibited significantly the dry shrinkage of self-compacting concrete; with the volume content of coarse aggregate increased, the workability of self-compacting concrete decreased significantly, but the volume stability of self-compacting concrete improved obviously, thus the optimum volume content of coarse aggregate of self-compacting concrete was range from 0.30 to 0.34; when the volume content of fine aggregate varied at the range of 0.40~0.50, there may be little effects on the workability of self-compacting concrete, but the increase self-compacting concretes volume content could reduce obviously the dry shrinkage of self-compacting concrete. Moreover, the variation in the volume content of coarse and fine aggregate should have slight influence on the early strength of self-compacting concrete, and the influence of the volume content variety on the later strength of self-compacting concrete could be neglected eventually.

As environmentally friendly materials, carbon black and bio-oil can be used as modifiers to effectively enhance the poor high-temperature and low-temperature performance of base asphalt and its mixture. Different carbon black and bio-oil contents and shear time were selected as the test influencing factors in this work. Based on the Box–Behnken design (BBD), carbon black/bio-oil composite modified asphalt was prepared to perform the softening point, penetration, multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR), and bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests. The response surface method (RSM) was used to analyze the test results. In addition, the base asphalt mixtures and the optimal performance carbon black/bio-oil composite modified asphalt mixtures were formed for rutting and low-temperature splitting tests. The results show that incorporating carbon black can enhance the asphalt’s high-temperature performance by the test results of irrecoverable creep compliance (Jnr) and strain recovery rate (R). By contrast, the stiffness modulus (S) and creep rate (M) test results show that bio-oil can enhance the asphalt’s low-temperature performance. The quadratic function models between the performance indicators of carbon black/bio-oil composite modified asphalt and the test influencing factors were established based on the RSM. The optimal performance modified asphalt mixture’s carbon black and bio-oil content was 15.05% and 9.631%, and the shear time was 62.667 min. It was revealed that the high-temperature stability and low-temperature crack resistance of the carbon black/bio-oil composite modified asphalt mixture were better than that of the base asphalt mixture because of its higher dynamic stability (DS) and toughness. Therefore, carbon black/bio-oil composite modified asphalt mixture can be used as a new type of choice for road construction materials, which is in line with green development.
