This paper attempts to solve the following problems of traditional Internet Eng-lish learning websites: the emphasis on the teaching process over the timely feed-back of the students, the bottleneck on the autonomous learning ability of the stu-dents, and the delay in the update of relevant resources. For this purpose, the au-thor established a web-based English autonomous learning platform. Specifically, the conceptual model was analysed by the object-oriented technology, the brows-er/server (B/S) architecture was set up to send data to the ADO.NET-based backend database, and displayed as webpages. The research results show that the design and implementation of the proposed system offers a preliminary solution to the lack of collaborative communication in traditional webpage learning, and widens the range of resource sharing. The system is in line with the English learners’ demand for and interests in Internet learning, and arouses the students’ interests and enthusiasm of English learning.

This study aimed at exploring the use of computer technology and smartphone applications in the learning of English. A case study design using questionnaires and interview data was expected to reveal lecturers and students' perceptions comprehensively. The data obtained were analyzed with quantitative and qualitative data analysis in descriptive statistics and coding. This study indicated that computer technology and smartphone applications in learning English could smoothly run if the internet network was stable and there was a sufficient data quota. In its use, both lecturers and students needed to coordinate well regarding the English learning platform used. Maritime English is defined as the English language used by seafarers both at sea and in port and by individuals working in the shipping and shipbuilding industry. The teachers are required to make the students skillful and ready to work in maritime sectors once they graduate. The existing and relevant maritime English learning materials following STCW 2010 curriculum in Indonesia are still rare and limited. This study aims to conduct a need analysis of android and web-based Maritime English apps based on the students' perspectives. This study uses questionnaires shared and completed randomly by 318 students from different majors and at Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Pelayaran (Maritime Higher Education Institute) Jakarta. The data is gathered and analyzed accordingly to create the essential concept of the MarEng apps design. The questionnaire result indicates that most of the participants need an ME learning platform in order for them to have better access to and to practice the required knowledge and skills. Explicit bilingual instructions and features like video, audio, and text are also preferred to be incorporated. It is suggested to start from the elementary level and cover the four skills, especially listening, speaking, and pronunciation. It is so suggested that the platform can be constructed in easy and fun UI/UX covering the required content.

This study attempts to give teachers a perspective regarding what problems students face during the process of learning English material by employing the Autonomous Learning. The researcher used Pragmatics as the subject of learning to observe the process of Autonomous Learning during one semester. This is a descriptive qualitative research in which 7 students of English Education of PGRI University were employed as the subjects of this study. Those students are the most active ones in class. After they conducted a series of learning process autonomously, they were expected to fill the questionnaire as the data source to reveal the basic need of the students that they are expecting from the teachers. Then the data would be explained descriptively. It is expected that the teachers are going to have some new perspectives regarding the autonomous learning, which is related to the students’ problems. What they want the teachers to do and what the teachers should provide are two fundamental considerations. This study reveals that the autonomous learning does not mean that the students learn the material fully autonomously. Bigger than that, the students still need the presence of the teachers as the agent of autonomous learning.

The English Unit self-access centre (SAC) at Arabian Gulf University, Bahrain, has been an important part of our English for medical purposes programme for first year students for over 12 years. During that time, efforts have been made to involve these students in contributing to the SAC in order to augment their experience of learning English, personalize the facility and increase their responsibility for out-of-class English learning within the institutional setting. This article describes an initiative to elicit student contributions to the SAC, as well as evaluating how successful it was in achieving these aims. The article concludes with a recommendation to those directing similar small scale self-access centres to encourage student participation and involvement in all aspects of their running, without imposing pre-selected ideas and practices for autonomous learning that may not accord with the perceived needs and wishes of the SAC users themselves.

The incorporation of web-based instruction within the educator-student partnership in the English language classroom today has taken on a pivotal role in complementing if not supplementing the traditional face-to-face teaching mode. In this study, the researchers set out to find out how pre-university students from various majors in Taylor's University, perceive Moodle as an online English Language learning environment that is able to capture some of the facets of learner autonomy amidst face-to-face interaction with the educator. It evaluates whether these students recognize the effectiveness of Moodle as a tool that develops autonomous learning in the process of engaging with various online language activities prepared by the educator. An online survey was administered to capture their attitude and personal feedback on learning language through various Moodle features utilized throughout the semester. Findings of the research indicated that the students acknowledge Moodle as a language learning platform that enables autonomous learning to be practiced in a supportive environment.
