Therefore the objective of this study was to examine the differences of calf temperature by infrared thermal imager between on anti-fatigue matt and on the floor without mat. The subjects were instructed to wear short pants. It was measured with bare feet because influence of shoes and socks was to except. Subjects worked during 1 hour on the mat or without mat and next day without mat or on the mat. The order and load of work kept regularly. In this study, there was also a significant difference (p < 0.001) in the calf skin temperature between conditions, and calf temperature was higher when the subjects were standing on the mat than when they were standing on the floor without mat. By providing an elastic surface to stand on, a matt simulates muscle activity in feet and legs promote blood circulation. As a cross-modality evaluation, electromyogram was measured. There was the significant difference in Median Frequency (p < 0.001) and Median Power Frequency (p < 0.05) of EMG between two conditions. Median Frequency and Median Power Frequency showed a tendency to more decrease on the floor.

Thermography information of foot is playing very important role in body character and related products design. The purpose of this study is to investigate the distribution and change character of foot skin temperature variety during low-intensity movement. Totally 19 subjects participated in this testing, skin surface temperature monitor was using high-precision Infrared Thermal Imager. The average foot skin temperature existed a significant difference at rest condition. After 30min persistent low-intensity exercise, each area of the foot was increased, and the increasing trend was quite similar. This study could provide the basis of foot physiological function understanding.

Objective. To ascertain pathological information on hyperplasia of mammary glands (HMG) of patients via the infrared radiation temperature of acupoints.Method. Patients with HMG and healthy controls were tested using an infrared thermal imager.Results. In controls, no significant difference in temperature was observed between points with the same name (P>0.05). The temperature of all tested points was found to be higher in the group with HMG than in that of the healthy controls, except for the left and right Zusanli (ST36). The temperature of the right Rugen (ST18), Guanyuan (CV4), Qihai (CV6), and Hegu (LI4) reached a statistically significant heightened level (P=0.046~P<0.001). The temperature of the Zusanli (ST36) and Hegu (LI4) present on the right side was significantly higher than that of the left (P=0.001andP=0.004, resp.), while the temperature of the left Youmen (KI21) was significantly higher than that of the right (P=0.008).Conclusion. The temperature of the bilateral acupoints in healthy controls was symmetrical, and the raised temperatures observed of the Rugen (ST18), Guanyuan (CV4), Qihai (CV6), and Hegu (LI4) acupoints of HMG patients and the imbalance of the temperature of the bilateral acupoints Zusanli (ST36), Youmen (KI21), and Hegu (LI4) carried special pathological information about HMG disease.

The proper slaughter positioning of animals is among the most crucial factors in animal welfare. The lateral position in Halal slaughter is a technique used around the world by Muslims, with a few practicing the upright position. The literature on the effects of slaughter in upright versus lateral positions on pain and stress is scarce. Thus, this study was designed to evaluate the effects of slaughter positions on blood biochemical parameters, plasma catecholamines, and electroencephalographic (EEG) responses. Twenty Brahman crossbred steers were subjected to slaughter in either lateral recumbency (LP) (n = 10) or an upright position (UP) (n = 10). There was a significant increase in adrenaline (p < 0.0001) and noradrenaline (p < 0.05) at T2 compared to T1 in the animals of both groups. A significant difference (p < 0.0001) was observed in the median frequency (MF) and total power (Ptot) of EEG, parameters for pain and stress, between the animals slaughtered in the upright and the lateral position. However, MF and delta waves were significantly higher (p < 0.05) after slaughter in the UP group than in the LP group. The results demonstrate a lesser amount of stress and pain responses among the LP group.

AbstractBased on the improved computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method (CFD-DEM), heat transfer and two-component flow of biomass and quartz sand have been studied from experiments and numerical simulation in this paper. During experiments, the particle temperature and moving images are respectively recorded by infrared thermal imager and high speed camera. With the increase of the velocity, the mixing index (MI) and the cooling rate of the particles are rising. Due to larger heat capacity and mass, the temperature of biomass drops slower than that of quartz sand. Fictitious element method is employed to solve the incompatibility of the traditional CFD-DEM where the cylindrical biomass are considered as an aggregation of numerous fictitious sphere particles arranged in certain sequence. By the comparison of data collected by infrared thermal imager and the simulated results, it can be concluded that experimental data is basically agreement with numerical simulation results. Directly affected by inflow air (25℃), the average temperature of particles in the bed height area (h>30 mm) is about 3 degrees lower than that of the other heights. When the superficial gas velocity is larger, the fluidization is good, and the gas temperature distribution is more uniform in the whole area. On the contrary, bubbles are not easy to produce and the fluidization is restricted at lower superficial gas velocity. Gas-solid heat transfer mainly exists under the bed height of 10 mm, and decreases rapidly on fluidized bed height. The mixing index (MI) is employed to quantitatively discuss the mixing effectiveness, which first rises accelerate, then rising speed decreases, finally tends to a upper limit.

Background: Canine distemper has been classified as highly contagious for most of domestic and wild carnivores, and the infection can be fatal. Canine distemper inclusion bodies, also denominated Lenz inclusion bodies, are large aggregates of viral nucleocapsid particles that can be form in red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs) and epithelial cells in many tissues during the acute phase of infection. Their presence in blood is transient and rarely encountered in light microscopy but are pathognomonic when identified in blood smears. The objective of this study was to investigate the frequency of distemper inclusions in erythrocytes according to the fraction of the sample used for blood smears. Materials, Methods & Results: The study was conducted with routine blood sample provided by the Veterinary Laboratory of Clinical Analysis from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. The EDTA-K2 blood sample of a 40 days old male dog, mixed breed, no immunization records, presenting diarrhea, hyporexia, myoclonus and pustules in the abdomen, was selected. In a routine peripheral blood smear examination, several distemper inclusions were observed in the erythrocytes. From this sample, ten smears were performed using a whole blood (WB) and top erythrocyte fraction combined with buffy coat, denominated of expanded buffy coat (EBC). The EBC fraction was obtained after centrifugation of EDTA whole blood in microhematocrit tubes at 9600 x g for 5 min to obtained the packed cell volume (PCV) and buffy coat. After centrifugation, the blood cells are separated into three layers based on density: platelets (adjacent to supernatant), WBCs, and RBCs in the bottom. The PCV was measured and the microhematocrit tube was ruptured 2% below the interface between leukocytes and plasma, deposited into a plastic microtubes, homogenized and used for blood smear preparation. All smears were stained with Diff-Quick Stain. The frequency of observation of RBCs with distemper inclusions bodies was performed under optical microscopy, in the immersion objective (100x), accounting for complete fields up to a minimum of 1000 RBCs, and compared between WB and EBC. In comparison between blood smears obtained from WB and EBC, a highly significant difference (P = 0.0004) was observed in the frequency distribution of distemper inclusion. The median of frequency of RBCs with distemper inclusions in a WB smears was 12.68/1000 RBCs (10.1 - 16.1/1000 RBCs), with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 12%. Median of frequency of distemper inclusions from EBC smears was 54.23/1000 RBCs (45-77.9/1000 RBCs), CV of 18% were observed. The median frequency of inclusions found in EBC smears was 4.27 times higher than the WB smears. Discussion: Buffy coat smear providing a concentrated preparation of nucleated cells and this procedure is useful to looking for low-incidence infectious organisms or other hematologic alterations. The upper fraction of the RBC column, below the buffy coat, is composed of young RBCs. Selection of these portion, and their possible formed in the bone marrow viral replication phase, could justified the increase in the frequency of RBCs containing viral inclusions in EBC, which would also increase the sensitivity of the technique. EBC was homogenized previously to make the smears, certifying the adequate cell distribution in the slide surface without interfere with the frequency of distemper inclusion in RBCs observation. These results were confirmed with the coefficients of variation. In conclusion, distemper inclusions bodies in RBCs from EBC is a recommended diagnosis method in patients suspected of canine Distemper infection. The observation being more frequent in the EBC in comparison with WB, commonly used in veterinary hematology.

Thrombocytopenia or platelet deficiency is a condition, in which platelet level in the blood circulation is below normal, which is less than 150,000 cells/µl. Thrombocytopenia is classified into some conditions, including decreased platelet production, increased need for platelets, and other thrombocytopenia. The need for increased platelets can be subdivided into primary immune thrombocytopenia, secondary immune thrombocytopenia, non-primary ITP, and thrombocytopenia that are not immune-mediated. Several cytokines play a role in the process of thrombocytopenia, one of which is Interleukin-17 (IL-17) that will be further discussed in this study. A previous study reported that IL-17 production increased in ITP and cITP patients. The objective of this study was to analyze the IL-17 levels and figure out the differences in IL-17 levels in the serums of patients with primary ITP and secondary ITP. The samples were taken from Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital and the specimens were examined in the Research Unit Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Hasanuddin/Hospital of Universitas Hasanuddin. The comparative test resulted in p-value = 0.005, where p <α = 0.05; and therefore, there was a significant difference between IL 17 levels in ITP and non-primary ITP.

Balance training devices such as wobble board, basu ball and balance cushion are the tool use in balance training exercise programme in order to improve muscle strength and restore posture balance due degeneration of body function or injury. Recently, self-balancing scooter such as Segway and hover board showed a positive effects on rehabilitation. However, it is less known how these devices affect muscle physiological properties. This study aims to to measure ankle muscles activation on  difference balance training devices and hover board. Besides, a comparison between these device will be done in order to identify if hover board has a promising feature to be an alternative balance training device. In this research, surface EMG (sEMG) was used to record tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscle activities. Seventeen healthy subjects were required to stand on three different types of balance training device such as wobble board, balance cushion, bosu ball and a hover board. They were asked to maintain their standing position on each devices for two minutes. Both time domain and frequency domain analysis were used to identify the features of the EMG signal. Time domain analysis measurement involved average rectified value (ARV) and root mean square (RMS), meanwhile for frequency domain, median frequency (MDF) of the signal were measured. The results shows that, the RMS is differed significantly between the balance training devices (p<0.05) for tibialis anterior muscle but not gastrocnemius muscle. Meanwhile, no significant difference between the devices in the ARV and the MDF value (p>0.05). Besides, less stable devices increased muscle activity were observed. There is not much difference between hover board and the other devices in term of physiological effects of both tibialis anterior and gastrochemious muscle. It is also suggested that hover board offers a promising feature to be an alternative device for balance training device.

Background Dynamic action of anesthetic agents was compared at cortical and subcortical levels during induction of anesthesia. Unconsciousness involved the cortical brain but suppression of movement in response to noxious stimuli was mediated through subcortical structures. Methods Twenty-five patients with Parkinson disease, previously implanted with a deep-brain stimulation electrode, were enrolled during the implantation of the definitive pulse generator. During induction of anesthesia with propofol (n = 13) or sevoflurane (n = 12) alone, cortical (EEG) and subcortical (ESCoG) electrogenesis were obtained, respectively, from a frontal montage (F3-C3) and through the deep-brain electrode (p0-p3). In EEG and ESCoG spectral analysis, spectral edge (90%) frequency, median power frequency, and nonlinear analysis dimensional activation calculations were determined. Results Sevoflurane and propofol decreased EEG and ESCoG activity in a dose-related fashion. EEG values decreased dramatically at loss of consciousness, whereas there was little change in ESCoG values. Quantitative parameters derived from EEG but not from ESCoG were able to predict consciousness versus unconsciousness. Conversely, quantitative parameters derived from ESCoG but not from EEG were able to predict movement in response to laryngoscopy. Conclusion These data suggest that in humans, unconsciousness mainly involves the cortical brain, but that suppression of movement in response to noxious stimuli is mediated through the effect of anesthetic agents on subcortical structures.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the changes in lower extremity muscle morphology and electromyography (EMG) signals during treadmill running (TR) and plastic track running (PR). Methods: A total of 10 healthy male runners aged 22.5±1.3 years, height: 175.5±4.5 cm; weight: 71.9±2.7 kg; BMI: 22.1±1.1 volunteered to participate in this study. Muscle morphology data were collected by a portable ultrasound scanner before and after running. Median frequency (MF), mean power frequency (MPF) and root mean square (RMS) were monitored during TR and PR. Results: The results indicated that muscle thickness and pennation angle have increased after running. The muscle thickness after PR showed significantly higher than TR in tested muscle except tibialis anterior (TA) and medial gastrocnemius (MG). In contrast, only the pennation angle of TA and lateral gastrocnemius (LG) after PR was significantly different from that after TR (P <0.001, P = 0.002). The most significant difference in the change rate of muscle thickness was found at TA. In addition, TA and MG showed significantly higher change rate of the pennation angle after TR than that after PR. Both of MF and MPF showed a downward trend after TR and PR. It could discover that the MF and MPF of LG during TR showed a significantly lower than that during PR both in two phases (P =0.001, P <0.001). However, in the last 5 minutes, MF and MPF of MQ during PR were smaller than that during PR (P = 0.001, P = 0.015). Furthermore, MF of RF during TR showed significantly different from that during PR (P = 0.017). From the point of RMS, in the first five minutes, the RMS of medical quadriceps (MQ), lateral quadriceps (LQ), hamstring muscles (HM) and MG during TR was significantly higher than that of PR (P <0.05). In addition, the RMS of all tested muscles after TR was significantly higher than after PR during the last 5 minutes (P <0.05). Conclusions: The current study indicated that TR and PR would cause different effects to lower extremity muscle morphology. In addition, the EMG signals based on running surfaces are also unconformity. Compared with the plastic track, the treadmill will bring more stimulation to the lower extremity muscles. The preliminary findings provide further insights into the rationality of runners’ choice of the running surface.
