A Multipoint Diffraction Strain Sensor (MISS) with the novel feature of simultaneous strain measurement at multiple points is characterized. Unlike conventional interferometry based systems, this patented sensor uses principles of diffraction to directly measure strain at large number of points. In this sensor, a high-frequency diffraction grating is illuminated by two symmetric laser beams and the diffracted beams are sampled on a CCD camera via a micro-lens array into an array of dots. The shift of the individual dots is sensed and strains or rigid body tilt are calculated directly. This novel technique is expected to be very valuable in numerous industrial applications.

The remote prognosis and diagnosis of bearings can prevent industrial system failures, but the availability of realistic experimental data, being as close as possible to those detected in industrial applications, is essential to validate the monitoring algorithms. In this paper, an innovative bearing test rig architecture is presented, based on the novel concept of “self-contained box”. The monitoring activity is applicable to a set of four middle-sized bearings simultaneously, while undergoing the independent application of radial and axial loads in order to simulate the behavior of the real industrial machinery. The impact of actions on the platform and supports is mitigated by the so-called “self-contained box” layout, leading to self-balancing of actions within the rotor system. Moreover, the high modularity of this innovative layout allows installing various sized bearings, just changing mechanical adapters. This leads to a reduction of cost as well as of system down-time required to change bearings. The test rig is equipped with suitable instrumentation to develop effective procedures and tools for in- and out-monitoring of the system. An initial characterization of the healthy system is presented.

The overwhelming scale of climate change demands new ways of bridging national, cultural, and taxonomic differences. However, ecocritical frameworks that emphasise non-human agency in an attempt to make human individuals empathise with other people, other species, and the earth are haunted by the tenacious spectre of nineteenth-century classical liberalism’s characterization of personhood through specious, fragile dichotomies that can largely fall under the general rubric of agency versus determinism. The putatively opposed terms of these binaries are malleable, and control of their designation is a key element of control societies. Contemporary scholarship has identified several ways subjects bleed into objects, but, even though the ‘individual’ should theoretically collapse under its own ontological pressure in our current biopolitical age, neoliberalism largely holds onto classical liberalism’s central dogma of a person as an agential individual. I analyse the novel Never Let Me Go (2005) by Kazuo Ishiguro and its critical analyses to show how the plight to recognise agency is a prison of analysis that upholds an ideal of the individual as the bastion of personhood. As seen through the afterlife of slavery post-emancipation, those in power can discursively recognise the humanity in people formerly designated 'things' while still perpetuating systematic exploitation and dehumanisation. The metric of ‘agency’ as a unit of hope is an epistemic barrier to effective political rhetoric regarding climate change and species thinking.

In the context of avoiding the use of non-renewable energy sources, employing lignocellulosic biomass for ethanol production remains a challenge. Cellulases play an important role in this scenario: they are some of the most important industrial enzymes that can hydrolyze lignocellulose. This study aims to improve on the characterization of a thermostable Aspergillus fumigatus endo-1,4-β-glucanase GH7 (Af-EGL7). To this end, Af-EGL7 was successfully expressed in Pichia pastoris X-33. The kinetic parameters Km and Vmax were estimated and suggested a robust enzyme. The recombinant protein was highly stable within an extreme pH range (3.0–8.0) and was highly thermostable at 55 °C for 72 h. Low Cu2+ concentrations (0.1–1.0 mM) stimulated Af-EGL7 activity up to 117%. Af-EGL7 was tolerant to inhibition by products, such as glucose and cellobiose. Glucose at 50 mM did not inhibit Af-EGL7 activity, whereas 50 mM cellobiose inhibited Af-EGL7 activity by just 35%. Additionally, the Celluclast® 1.5L cocktail supplemented with Af-EGL7 provided improved hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse “in natura”, sugarcane exploded bagasse (SEB), corncob, rice straw, and bean straw. In conclusion, the novel characterization of Af-EGL7 conducted in this study highlights the extraordinary properties that make Af-EGL7 a promising candidate for industrial applications.

Purpose The low-temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) microfluidic-microwave devices fabrication requires careful consideration of two main factors: the accuracy of deposition of conductive paths and the modification needed to the standard process of the LTCC technology. Neither of them are well-described in the literature. Design/methodology/approach The first part of this paper deals with the individual impact of screen parameters such as aperture, photosensitive emulsion thickness and mounting angle on the precision of the screen-printed conductive paths fabrication. For the quantitative analysis purposes, the design of experiment method with Taguchi orthogonal array and analysis of variance was used. The second part contains the characterization of the complex permittivity measured for different values of LTCC substrates lamination pressure. Findings It can be concluded, that the combination of aperture, equal to 24 µm, emulsion thickness 20 µm and mounting angle 22.5° ensures the highest quality of printed conductive metallization. Furthermore, the obtained results indicate, that the modification of the lamination pressure does not affect significantly the dielectric parameters of the LTCC substrates. Originality/value This paper shows two aspects of the fabrication of the microfluidic-microwave LTCC devices. First, the resolution of the applied metallization is critical in manufacturing high-frequency structures. The obtained experimental results have shown that optimal screen parameters, in terms of conductive pattern quality, can be found. Second, the received outcomes indicate that the changes in the lamination pressure do not affect significantly the electrical parameters of the substrate. Hence, this effect does not need to be taken into account.

The subject of the present work is Wolfgang Herrndorf’s award-winning youth novel Tsch- ick (i.e. “German Youth Literature Prize” (2011) and “Clemens Brentano Prize” (2012)). The novel, released in 2010, has sold more than two million copies to date and has been translated into more than 25 languages. In the novel, the story is told by Maik Klingenberg, a fourteen- year-old teenager who is left devastated by the surrounding circumstances and his outsider position before the summer holidays, but through his friendship with Tschick (during the summer holidays) experiences a solution and development process that changes his view of the world and his positioning to his environment and to himself in a positive way. The main focus of the work lies on the (explicit and implicit) character selection, characterization and constellation in the text. The methodological approach to textual analysis is based on insights from narratology, sociology and psychoanalysis. After a theoretical-introductory part, the text-analytical part begins with the selection of the staff of the fictitious world depicted in the novel and shows that the author’s novel gives a pluralistic-heterogeneous-inter- or transcul- tural social image of the German capital Berlin and its (wider) environment. In the following chapter of the work, the introductory characterization of the main character and the related figure constellations will be discussed in more detail. It is shown that Herrndorf uses these constellations to address the complex interrelation between the individual and various col- lective identities, such as those into which the subject is born (Maik’s parents), and those to whom the subject belongs based on the present circumstances of life (Maik’s teacher and the other students of the school). The focus of analysis of the following part lies on those figure constellations that have arisen as a result of Maik’s escape from the structures crushing him (Maik’s voluntary social interactions and friendly ties) and by which the author refers to the dynamic constitution of personal identity, of which the developmental process defies static defining and reveals the possibility of self-change and self-development. Based on the pre- viously given text analysis, the last part of the thesis gives a conclusion corresponding to the analysis results.

Objective: The objective of this work is to synthesis thio-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl derivatives for industrial applications. Methods: The synthesis was done by the reaction of (S)-2-amino-2-phenylacetic acid with ethanol-derived ethyl (S)-2-amino-2-phenylacetate. The reaction of ethyl (S)-2-amino-2-phenylacetate with Boc anhydride and hydrazine produces ethyl (S)-2-((tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino)-2-phenylacetate. The intermediate 5-alkyl amino-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiols have been isolated as stable compounds. Results: To study the characteristics of these compounds, they are subjected to 1HNMR, 13CNMR, and IR. These studies examine the chemical structure of synthesized compounds. The mass of the novel compounds was established with the help of the LCMS test. The structural and optical properties were examined by the powder XRD and photoluminescence spectrum respectively. Conclusion: The sharp intense peak in the powder XRD indicates the crystal nature of the sample. The values obtained from the LCMS test indicate that the compounds have good thermal stability. The absorption peak at 358 nm in the PL spectrum indicates that the sample can be used in photoelectronic devices.

Background: Heterocyclic complexes in the current era are aimed at evaluating as new products that possess wide biological, pharmacological, agricultural, medicinal, industrial applications and many more highly significant uses. Although they have been known from long ago for their great biocidal significance, still the researchers pay a great attention for profiling the pharmacological view of novel macrocycles like benzothiazoles. Increasing number of microbial infectious diseases and resistant pathogens create a demand and urgency to develop novel, potent, safe and improved variety of antimicrobial agents. Objective: This initiates a task for current chemistry to synthesize compounds that show promising activity as therapeutic agents with lower toxicity. It is very necessary to introduce new and biologically safe and active drugs eco-friendly in nature and effective as antimicrobial agents. Methods: Transition metal complexes share an important place in this regards. Therefore in this paper we report the synthesis and characterization of transition metal complex of N/S ligand by FT-IR, NMR, ESR, elemental analysis, conductometric and magnetic moment measurements. The synthesized metal complexes were successfully investigated for biological activities namely antifungal. Results: Based on the results we pronounced biocidal activities of the novel complexes. Concerned complexes contribute diverse applications by being more economical, harmless, non -toxic and eco-environmental friendly.

В статье предметом исследования являются абзацные зачины в текстах одного из крупнейших современных осетинских писателей Гастана Агнаева. С позиций коммуникативной стилистики, в русле теории регулятивности, рассматриваются содержательные типы и лексическая структура абзацных зачинов как регулятивной структуры – компонента идиостиля писателя. На материале двух разных по жанру, стилю, объему произведений писателя (романа «Младшая дочь Темыра» и рассказа «Лошадь плакала…») предпринята попытка составления содержательной типологии регулярных абзацных зачинов, выявления лексических регулятивных средств и приемов реализации авторских интенций. Выбор материала исследования продиктован намерением доказать универсальность средств и способов организации диалога с читателем как проявлений индивидуальных качеств языковой личности писателя, то есть его идиостиля. Актуальность такого исследования обусловлена тем, что доминанты современного гуманитарного знания – антропоцентризм и текстоцентризм – еще не оказали должного влияния на осетинскую лингвистику, творческая индивидуальность автора художественного текста в разных работах рассматривается только в аспекте системы концептов или композиционных приемов. Методологической основой исследования послужили работы Н.С. Болотновой, Г.А. Золотовой, Е.В. Сидорова и др. Используя методы интроспекции, моделирования, семантико-стилистического анализа, количественных подсчетов, проанализировано более 1000 абзацных зачинов, выявлены типичные в плане содержания и лексической оформленности абзацные зачины, доказан их статус как регулятивной структуры в структуре идиостиля Г. Агнаева. Сделан вывод о том, что идиостилю писателя присущ принцип экономии языковых средств при создании образа. Высокая частотность глагольной и абстрактной лексики в основных типах абзацных зачинов дает возможность говорить о склонности к рефлексии, имплицитном пропагандировании извечных ценностей, наличии внутреннего конфликта с прагматичным миром. In the article, the subject of research is the paragraphs in the texts of one of the greatest modern Ossetian writers Gastan Agnaev. From the standpoint of communicative stylistics, in line with the theory of regulation, content types and lexical structure of paragraphs are considered as a regulatory structure – a component of the writer's idiostyle. On the basis of two works of the writer, different in genre, style, volume (the novel "The Youngest Daughter of Temyr" and the story "The Horse Cried..."), an attempt was made to compile a meaningful typology of regular paragraphs, identify lexical regulatory means and methods of implementing author's intentions. The choice of the research material was dictated by the intention to prove the universality of the means and methods of organizing dialogue with the reader as manifestations of the individual qualities of the writer's linguistic personality, that is, his idiostyle. The relevance of such a study is due to the fact that the dominants of modern humanitarian knowledge – anthropocentrism and textocentrism – have not yet had a proper impact on Ossetian linguistics, the creative individuality of the author of a literary text in different works is considered only in the aspect of a system of concepts or compositional techniques. The works of N.S. Bolotnova, G.A. Zolotova, E.V. Sidorova and others served as the methodological basis of the study. Using the methods of introspection, modeling, semantic and stylistic analysis, quantitative calculations, more than 1000 paragraphs were analyzed, paragraphs typical in terms of content and lexical design were revealed, their status as a regulatory structure in the structure of G. Agnaev's idiostyle was proved. It is concluded that the principle of saving language means when creating an image is inherent in the writer's idiostyle. The high frequency of verbal and abstract vocabulary in the main types of paragraphs makes it possible to talk about a tendency to reflection, implicit propaganda of eternal values, and the presence of an internal conflict with the pragmatic world.
