Research in the late 80´s on technological companies that develop products of high value innovation, with sufficient speed and flexibility to adapt quickly to changing market conditions, gave rise to the new set of methodologies known as Agile Management Approach. In the current changing economic scenario, we considered very interesting to study the similarities of these Agile Methodologies with other practices whose effectiveness has been amply demonstrated in both the West and Japan. Strategies such as kaizen, Lean, World Class Manufacturing, Concurrent Engineering, etc, would be analyzed to check the values they have in common with the Agile Approach.

Purpose – Continuous improvement (CI) is regarded as a powerful approach to achieve business excellence. However, the implementation is not simple as it involves managing a considerable amount of tangible and intangible factors throughout the whole organization. The purpose of this paper is to fill the gap by presenting first-hand information about how companies really implement and organize their CI processes. Design/methodology/approach – The study was based on semi-structured interviews in ten high performing companies in the Basque Country, a region in northern Spain well known for its business quality. The objective was to analyze the state of their CI processes, putting special focus on how the organizational structure integrates with the CI processes and what are the characteristics of the corresponding measurement system. Findings – The study shows a lack of company-wide focus on CI, little written evidence of previous improvement activities, unclear improvement process owner, and poor use of adequate measurement systems to monitor CI. Practical implications – Managers should understand that is not enough to guarantee their own commitment and provide the structure, since in order to become learning organization, a different holistic approach towards the CI process must be adopted. Originality/value – While most previous work on this field have focused primarily on how to implement different techniques in order to achieve better productive performance, this study presents empirical research from a more holistic approach, assessing the characteristics affecting CI by considering strategy, structure, and the measurement system.

The article reveals the key points of accounting and management actions in terms of studying market conditions, PR and forecasting planned actions. The main accounting and management tools in management accounting are: planning, management, accounting, organization, analysis and monitoring of business processes. Determination of the incurred costs of the business and its further sustainable development is the conceptual basis of management accounting. The aim of the study is to develop criteria for management accounting in the study of the sawn timber market and to study consumer demand for this product, identify consumer preferences, assess the frequency of purchasing products and factors affecting demand. The subject of the research is management accounting as a complex mechanism in terms of research (monitoring) market conditions, PR and forecast of planned actions. In accordance with this goal, the main task was determined: to predict the development of the market, adequately (in a timely manner, taking into account all factors) to respond to them, thereby ensuring high efficiency of economic activity, and strengthening its competitiveness in the Udmurt Republic. It is concluded that, despite the complexity and specifics of this type of activity, with a competent management approach, industrial enterprises in order to gain competitive advantages must constantly collect and process accounting and management information, including marketing information for an objective assessment of the external environment, analyze their own activities in order to reduce financial risks.

Companies’ IT Systems are confronted with constantly changing market conditions, new competitive threats and a growing number of legal regulations. The service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm provides a promising way to address these challenges at the level of a company’s IT infrastructure. These challenges, as well as the management of the newly introduced complexity and heterogeneity, are targeted by SOA Governance approaches. In recent years, a number of concrete frameworks for SOA Governance addressing these issues have been proposed. There is no holistic approach considering all proposed elements, consolidating them in order to form a universally applicable model. In this contribution, we motivate SOA Governance, investigate and compare different approaches, identify common concepts, and derive a generic model for governance of Service-oriented Architectures.

Supply chain performance is often equated with having the latest collaborative technology in place. However, current studies suggest that supply chain performance also requires human collaboration. To change conventional thinking, this paper proposes a holistic approach to supply chain management (SCM), clarifies the forces that facilitate human collaboration, and highlights the economics advantages of employing a holistic supply chain management approach.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to bridge the knowledge gap in designing MBA strategy between China and the West by examining the content, context and process of MBA delivery. This paper challenges the assumptions and pedagogical approach underpinning the current design and delivery of MBA programmes that were originally moulded with Western management history and development in the era of globalization. There is consensus that MBA was used to train business managers; however, nowadays, people are inclined to state that MBA is used to develop global business leaders or full-fledged global competitors. How can we develop global business leaders without a global vision when designing MBA strategy? Design/methodology/approach – Based on extensive literature review and critical analyses through the strategic management approach, this paper examines the status quo of current MBA programmes in the West and in China. This paper presents a conceptual framework that draws on the current MBA literature and on-going debates around management education and development in the West and in China. Findings – The designing strategy of MBA has been originally strongly influenced by Western ideology and ethos. Therefore, the difficulties of management knowledge transfer are often explained through culture acclimatization and emphasize has been on cultural divergence rather than convergence. With synthesis between Western and Eastern management identified, we argue that the appropriateness and effectiveness of the traditional philosophy of MBA designing strategy based on Western management history has been challenged in the 21st century. The perception has fuelled criticism of business schools in the post-recession. They have come under fire for allegedly failing in their obligations to educate socially responsible business leaders (Barker, 2010). This leads to rethinking of the philosophy and vision underpinning the MBA designing strategy. A new philosophical approach – integration of Western management with Eastern philosophy has been under scrutiny, which is necessary in business education to enable future business leaders to become full-fledged competitors in the global market. Originality/value – The output of this discussion helps to establish a conceptual framework which will provide strategic insight in enabling business/management school and MBA providers to address the current deficiency in MBA teaching and learning strategy and develop more appropriate arrangement when considering the design and development of a successful MBA programme in the 21st century.

The aim of the paper is to examine the process of concurrent engineering in cross-functional teams and their role in the formation of knowledge potential of a company. Concurrent engineering in cross-functional teams is presented as an alternative to the traditional approach to the development of innovative products. In this study, organizational, activity and functional approaches were used, as well as the methods of analysis, deduction and generalization. The authors analyze the essence and features of concurrent engineering in the context of cross-functional teams. The necessity of considering cross-functional teams from the perspective of the community determining identity, common interests in a team, its relative integrity is established. The research has shown the importance of cross-functional teams in the development and formation of company’s knowledge potential. The article discusses various coordination mechanisms operating in cross-functional teams. The analysis of the features of cross-functional teams allows us to determine that they are built on the principles of adhocracy and impact the development of knowledge potential of companies significantly. However, cross-functional teams require a special management approach. The paper presents directions for further development of the research such as empirical analysis of the influence of various coordination mechanisms on knowledge sharing in a cross-functional team. The results of the study contribute to further research on cross-functional teams and effective knowledge sharing.
