Basalt fiber has been used as a reinforced material in cement-based materials because it has higher mechanical strength and cheaper than common silicate based glass-fibers. However, silicate-based glass fibers have low alkali resistance especially in cement matrix composite. In this work, we studied the improvement of alkali resistance by addition of zirconium silicate (ZrSiO4) in original basalt glass composition. The batch of basalt glass with additional ZrSiO4 contents of 0.00, 2.50, 5.00, 7.50 and 10.00 wt% were melted at 1500 °C. The liquidus temperature (TL) is important in for the fiber glass manufacturing. It need to formulate glass composition which requires a lower melting temperature and is crystallization resistant. TL as a function of composition is usually determined experimentally. In this study, glassy phase was determined by X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The glass transition temperature (Tg), the crystallization temperature (Tc) and TL were analyzed by Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA). The results found that the addition of ZrSiO4 in a basalt glass batch increased Tg while Tc of each sample was closed to original basalt fiber. Moreover, the alkali resistance of these glasses increased with an increasing of ZrSiO4 content. However, excessive ZrSiO4 contents (7.50 and 10.00 wt%) resulted in crystallization of ZrO2 which separated from glassy phase.

The paper presents studies on the properties of various types of micro-reinforcing fibers to assess their role and effectiveness in the structure formation of the cellular composite. Based on the data on the weight loss after exposure in a model medium of cement, analysis of the alkali resistance of fibers of five different types – basalt fiber, heat-treated basalt fiber, polymer fiber and glass fibers from two different manufacturers – was carried out. It is shown that the fibers have a sufficiently high durability in the medium of hardening cement, which is expressed by a relatively insignificant weight loss of the original fiber after exposure in a model medium for 28 days in ambient conditions. The weight loss for some fibers sharply increases when hardening conditions are changed to hydrothermal ones. The images of fibers exposed in a model medium of cement, obtained using scanning microscopy, were also analyzed, and the character of distribution of acidic and basic adsorption sites on the surface of fibers depending on the type was assessed. Based on the analysis of the obtained data, we can talk about a high number of active sites on the surface of basalt and glass fibers, which ensures the formation of crystalline new formations on them and makes it possible to predict their high adhesion to the cement matrix.

Usually, glass fibers in concrete permit the increase of the flexural strength. But the fibers in contact with cement are quickly degraded by alkali reactions due to the presence of portlandite. This article presents the results of investigations carried out to study the influence of curing conditions on the durability of alkali-resistant glass fibers in a cement matrix. Test results showed that alkali resistant fibers treated with zirconium oxide, present the same degradation phenomenon. The used cement nature has a large influence on the protection of the fibers. In addition, the degradation is weakened when silica fumes are added, owing to the pozzolanic effect that decreases the portlandite quantity. In spite of those different ameliorations, the use of such materials in humid environment is proving to be risky. The used techniques to study those phenomena are SEM equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDX) to observe the attack microstructures of the fibers and X-ray diffraction to quantify the portlandite and other phase development.

The silver particles were grown in situ on the surface of wood by the silver mirror method and modified with stearic acid to acquire a surface with superhydrophobic and antibacterial properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray energy spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze the reaction mechanism of the modification process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle tests were used to characterize the wettability and surface morphology. A coating with a micro rough structure was successfully constructed by the modification of stearic acid, which imparted superhydrophobicity and antibacterial activity to poplar wood. The stability tests were performed to discuss the stability of its hydrophobic performance. The results showed that it has good mechanical properties, acid and alkali resistance, and UV stability. The durability tests demonstrated that the coating has the function of water resistance and fouling resistance and can maintain the stability of its hydrophobic properties under different temperatures of heat treatment.

In the present study, the effect of thermal cycling and stacking sequence on the tensile behavior of fiber metal laminate (FML) composites containing glass and basalt fibers was investigated. To fabricate the FML samples, fibers reinforced epoxy composite were sandwiched between two layers of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy sheet. 55 thermal cycles were implemented at a temperature range of 25–115°C for 6 min. The tensile tests were carried out after the thermal cycling procedure, and the results were compared with non-thermal cycling specimens. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed for the characterization of the damage mechanisms. The FMLs containing four basalt fibers’ layers showed higher values of tensile strength, modulus, and energy absorption. On the other hand, the lowest strength and fracture energy were found in the asymmetrically stacked sample containing basalt and glass fibers, due to weak adhesion between composite components (basalt and glass fibers). The lowest tensile modulus was found in the sample containing glass fibers that was due to the low modulus of the glass fibers compared to basalt fibers. In the case of the samples exposed to thermal cycling, the highest and the lowest thermal stabilities were observed in basalt fibers samples and asymmetrically stacked samples, respectively. In accordance with the experimental results, a non-linear damage model using the Weibull function and tensile modulus was employed to predict the stress-strain relationship. The simulated strain–strain curves presented an appropriate agreement with the experimental results.

The paper studies features of the hydration process of the modified blended cement for fiber cement panels (FCP) using differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. It is found that deeper hydration process in silicate phase, denser and finer crystalline structure form in fiber cement matrix based on the modified blended cement. Generalization of this result to the case of fiber cement panels makes it possible to achieve formation of a denser and homogeneous structure with increased physical and mechanical properties.

This work evaluated the influence of additions of the ceramic shell residue (CSR), from the industries of Lost Wax Casting, in the modulus of elasticity and porosity of concrete. The CSR was ground and underwent a physical, chemical, and microstructural characterization. It was also analyzed, the environmental risk of the residue. In the physical characterization of the residue were analyzed, the surface area, and particle size distribution. In chemical characterization, the material powder was subjected to testing of X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Microstructural characterization was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The residue was utilized like addition by substitution of cement in concrete in the percentages of 10% and 15% by weight of Portland cement. It was evaluated properties of concrete in the fresh and hardened state, such as compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, absorption of water by total immersion and by capillarity. The results showed that the residue can be used in cement matrix and improve some properties of concrete. Thus, the CSR may contribute to improved sustainability and benefit the construction industry.

ABSTRACTThe liquidus temperature (TL) often limits the loading of high-level waste in glass through the constraint that TL must be at least 100°C below the temperature at which the glass viscosity is 5 Pa-s. In this study, values of TL for spinel primary crystalline phase were measured as a function of glass composition. The test glasses were based on high-iron Hanford Site tank wastes. All studied glasses precipitated spinel (Ni,Fe,Mn)(Cr,Fe)2O4 as the primary crystalline phase. TL was increased by additions of Cr2O3, NiO, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, and MnO; while Li2O, Na2O, B2O3, and SiO2 had a negative effect. Empirical mixture models were fitted to data.

Ternary borate glasses from the system Na2O?CaO?B2O3 together with soda-lime-borate samples containing 5 wt.% of MgO, Al2O3, SiO2 or P2O5 were prepared. The obtained glasses were converted to their glass-ceramic derivatives by controlled heat treatment. X-ray diffraction was employed to investigate the separated crys?talline phases in glass-ceramics after heat treatment of the glassy samples. The glasses and corresponding glass-ceramics after immersion in water or diluted phosphate solution for extended times were characterized by the grain method (adopted by several authors and recommended by ASTM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectra to justify the formation of hydroxyapatite as an indication of the bone bonding ability. The influence of glass composition on bioactivity potential was discussed too.

In the course of an investigation on refractory materials, in which the identification of minerals by their X-ray diffraction patterns had a prominent place, an interesting observation was made on a zircon of gem quality which was lent to us by the courtesy of Mr. B. W. Anderson. It may be recalled that the existence of three allotropes has been postulated in order to explain the considerable variations of physical properties which are found when comparing different specimens of zircon. In particular, densities ranging from 3·95 to 4·86 have been observed, the density of zirconium silicate, calculated from X-ray measurements, being 4·71.
