The objective of this study is to carry out an atmospheric corrosion analysis on low carbon steel in the form of plates and elbows in the port area of Belawan. The exposure of the test specimen was carried out at five locations for 12 months. The location points are notated as A, B, C, D, and E. The process of specimen exposure and data collection followed the ASTM G-1 and ASTM G-50 standards. The measurement results indicated a slight difference in the corrosion rate at each location. Location C and D have the highest corrosion rate and location A has the lowest corrosion rate. Meanwhile, for locations B and E have a corrosion rate value that is not much different from location A. This difference in value is probably a consequence of the distance from the exposure location to the seaside. Locations C and D are adjacent to the seaside while the other locations are not. The steel plate has an average value of corrosion rate 0.2214 mpy and steel elbow has a rate of 0.2412 mpy. From the measurement results obtained, the two specimens exposed at each location are still in the "outstanding" category.

The use of metals in the environment is especially important in environments such rubbish in heavy equipment or trucks, especially those of the tailgate is a tool to bring a variety of organic waste and inorganic bring the matter dissolved through a liquid called leachate and make contact or direct contact with the steel so that corrosion occurs due to leachate or wastewater flow contains many corrosive compounds that make part tailgate become quickly corroded. This study aims to determine the bias steel resist corrosion rate. The steel used is steel steel ST-41 and ST-60 is a low carbon steel and medium carbon steel. The methods used in research in the methods of losing weight and observe the types of corrosion that occurs by means of immersion with ASTM G31-72 which vary contact time for 3 weeks. Based on research conducted showed the corrosion rate of the fastest occur in steel ST-60 with a contact time of 1 week soaked the leachate and 2 weeks in contact with the air due to differences in the composition of the steel ST-60 and steel ST-41 which has a chromium content so high that steel ST-41 is superior in resisting corrosion rate while the type of corrosion that occurs is evenly corrosion and atmospheric corrosion.

Abstract Corrosion rate data are presented for low carbon steel in (1) a combination of sulfur dioxide, water vapor and air, and (2) aqueous solutions of sulfurous acid in the absence of air, at ordinary temperature. Information as to the nature of the corrosion products is presented and it is shown that this depends on the place in which the corrosion takes place to an important extent.

Corrosion-resistant metals and alloys towards liquid metals determine the service performances and lifetime of the devices employing liquid metals. This paper studies the static corrosion behaviors of iron, chromium, nickel, low carbon steel, and four types of stainless steels (SS410, SS430, SS304, SS316L) in liquid Sb-Sn at 500 oC, aiming to screen corrosion-resistant SS for Li||Sb-Sn liquid metal batteries (LMBs). The corrosion rates of Fe and Ni are 0.94 μm h-1 and 6.03 μm h-1 after 160 h’s measurement, respectively. Cr shows a low corrosion rate of < 0.05μm h-1, which is due to the formation of a relatively stable Cr-Sb layer that may be able to prevent the interdiffusion between the solid substrate and liquid Sb-Sn. Ni has a high corrosion rate because the formed Ni-Sb and Ni-Sn compounds are soluble in the liquid Sb-Sn. The corrosion products of both pure metals and SS can be predicted by thermodynamic and phase diagram analysis. Among the four types of SS, SS430 shows the best corrosion resistance towards liquid Sb-Sb with a corrosion rate of 0.19 μm h-1. Therefore, a liquid Sb-Sn resistant material should have a high Cr content and a low Ni content, and this principle is applicable to design metallic materials not only for LMBs but also for other devices employing liquid Sb- and Sn-containing liquid metals.

The corrosion rates of low-carbon steel, and 304, 316 and 410/420 stainless steels in simulated geothermal media containing hydrogen sulfide have been measured by means of the polarization resistance technique. Good agreement was found between weight-loss and polarization resistance measurements of the corrosion rate for all the metals tested. Carbon steel formed a non-adherent film of mackinawite (Fe1 + xS). The lack of protection afforded to the steel by the film resulted in an approximately constant corrosion rate. The stainless steels also exhibited corrosion rates that were independent of time. However, the 410 and 420 alloys formed an adherent film consisting mainly of troilite ( FeS ) which provided only limited passivity. In contrast, the 304 and 316 alloys appeared to be essentially protected by a passive film which did not seem to involve an iron sulfide phase. However, all the stainless steels, particularly the 410 and 420 alloys, showed pitting, which indicated that some breakdown of the passive films occurred.

Induced residual stresses on AISI 1020 low carbon steel plate during Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding process was evaluated in this study using experimental and Finite Element Method (FEM). The temperature range measured from the welding experimentation was 251°C-423°C, while the temperature range measured from the FEM was 230°C-563°C; whereas, the residual stress range measured from the welding experimentation was 144MPa-402Mpa, while the residual range measured from the FEM was 233-477MPa respectively. Comparing the temperature and stress results obtained from both methods, it was observed that the range of temperature and residual stresses measured were not exactly the same due to the principles at which both methods operate but disparities between the methods were not outrageous. However, these values can be fed back to optimization tools to obtain optimal parameters for best practices.  Results of the induced stress distribution was created from a static study where the thermal results were used as loading conditions and it was observed that the temperature increased as the von-Mises stress increased, indicating that induced stresses in welded component may hamper the longevity of such component in service condition. Hence, post-weld heat treatment is imperative in order to stress relieve metals after welding operation and improve their service life.

To improve the corrosion resistance on Q235 low carbon steel, in this paper, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), N-dodecyl trimethoxysilane and γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propytrimethoxysilane (KH560) were used to make organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel film. Cross cut test adhesion method, neutral salt spray test, electrochemical test and film protective efficiency were taken to value the corrosion resistance property. The corrosion topography was studied by optical microscope. In addition, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) curves and equivalent electric circuit fitting were used to analyze the corrosion mechanism. The cross cut adhesion of sol-gel film can reach 1 class and the protection class can attain 5 class after 72 hours neutral salt spray test. According to the potentiodynamic polarization curve analysis, the corrosion potential of sol-gel film coating sample after 0.5 hours immersion was -0.46 V (vs. SCE) on the 0.1 Hz, and its corrosion current density was 4.74×10-7 A·cm-2. The corrosion potential of bare Q235 low carbon steel plate after 0.5 hours immersion was -0.78 V (vs. SCE) on the 0.1 Hz, and its corrosion current density was 4.75×10-6 A·cm-2. The impedance value on 0.1 Hz (|Z|0.1Hz) (1.27×106 Ω·cm2) of sol-gel film coating sample was more than three orders of magnitude higher than the value of the low carbon steel plate. Even dipping in 3.5 wt. % NaCl for 72 hours, the |Z|0.1Hz value of sol-gel coating sample was still one order of magnitude higher than the low carbon steel plate with 0.5 hours immersion. Sol-gel film with excellent adhesion can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of low carbon steel plate. Sol-gel film can increase the protection efficiency of low carbon steel plate by 90%.

Purpose – This paper aims to investigate the corrosion behaviour of carbon steel in the Mauritian atmosphere over a three-year period. Atmospheric corrosion is a serious problem in Mauritius. Design/methodology/approach – Carbon steel samples were exposed outdoors at various sites. Mass loss analysis was performed to determine the corrosion behaviour of the metal over the exposure period. Scanning electron microscopy and Raman tests were performed to investigate the formation of the corrosion products on the carbon steel surface. Findings – It was found that the corrosion loss at two of the sites considered did not vary clearly according to the bilogarithmic law. Time of wetness was found to be a main factor affecting atmospheric corrosion in Mauritius. The corrosivity of the atmosphere was found to lie between categories C3 and C4, according to ISO 9223. Originality/value – The results can be of essential help to the construction industry, especially as steel buildings are becoming very common in Mauritius. Moreover, as Mauritius is a tropical island, the results obtained can be useful in other tropical islands.
