In this work, Zn-1.5Mg-0.5Ca alloy was studied. The alloy composition was chosen according to the results of our previous work that was focused on the research of biodegradable materials. The mechanical properties of such cast alloy are similar to the characteristics of human bones. Moreover, Zn-1.5Mg alloy itself satisfies biocompatibility requirements. The main goal of this work was to improve the mechanical properties of this alloy. A small addition of calcium affected both the alloy microstructure and mechanical properties. Light microscope and scanning electron microscope were used for the analysis of microstructure. After calcium addition, secondary phases were visible in observed micrographs; their composition was verified by XRD. Mechanical properties (Vickers hardness, compressive and tensile tests) were studied and compared with the Zn-1.5Mg alloy prepared in our previous work. Based on presented results, Zn-1.5Mg-0.5Ca alloy is intended for use in medicine as a suitable material for temporary implants.

In this study, the effect of calcium (Ca) and erbium (Er) on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior of magnesium-zinc alloys is reported. The alloys were prepared using disintegrated melt deposition (DMD) technique using the alloying additions as Zn, Ca, and Mg-Er master alloys and followed by hot extrusion. Results show that alloying addition of Er has significantly reduced the grain sizes of Mg-Zn alloys and also when compared to pure magnesium base material. It also has substantially enhanced both the tensile and the compressive properties by favoring the formation of MgZn2 type secondary phases that are uniformly distributed during hot-extrusion. The quaternary Mg-Zn-Ca-Er alloy exhibited the highest strength due to lower grain size and particle strengthening due to the influence of the rare earth addition Er. The observed elongation was a result of extensive twinning observed in the alloys. Also, the degradation rates have been substantially reduced as a result of alloying additions and it is attributed to the barrier effect caused by the secondary phases.

Abstract The paper presents the results of studies on the effect of the AlSi17Cu5 alloy overheating to atemperature of 920°C and modification with phosphorus (CuP10) on the resultingmechanical (HB, Rm, R0.2) and plastic (A5 and Z) properties. It has been shown that, so-called, "timethermal treatment" (TTT) of an alloy in the liquid state, consisting inoverheating the metal to about 250°C above Tliq, holding at this temperature by 30 minutes improvesthe mechanical properties. It has also been found that overheating of alloy above Tliq.enhances the process of modification, resulting in the formation of fine-grain structure. The primary silicon crystals uniformly distributed in the eutectic and characteristics ofthe α(Al) solution supersaturated with alloying elements present in the starting alloy composition (Cu, Fe) provide not only an increase of strength at ambient temperature but also at elevated temperature (250°C).

Thixoforming is a type of semisolid metal (SSM) processing for forming alloys in the semisolid state to near net-shaped products. In the present study, the effect of a thixoforming process on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-6Si-3Cu aluminium alloy was investigated. Melt was poured on a cooling slope at 630oC and the samples were obtained through permanent mold casting. They were thixoformed using a hydraulic press after holding at 571oC for 5min to yield a microstructure predominantly composed of α-Al globules and inter-globular Si particles. As-cast and thixoformed samples were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) as well as hardness measurements and tensile tests. The results indicate that the mechanical properties of thixoformed alloy have improved as compared to permanent mold cast alloy. The ultimate tensile strength of as-cast sample was 210 ± 3.5 MPa and increased to 241 ±3.1 MPa in the thixoformed sample while the yield strength of as-cast alloy was 140 ±4.5 MPa and increased to 176±3.3 MPa in the thixoformed sample. The thixoformed alloy also showed an improvement in elongation to fracture as it increased from 2% in as-cast sample to 3.2% in thixoformed alloy. The fracture of as-cast sample showed a cleavage fracture, whereas in the thixoformed alloy, a combination of dimple and cleavage was observed.

The influences of hot forging and ageing treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg−8Gd−2Y−1Nd−0.3Zn−0.6Zr (wt.%) alloy have been investigated. The results showed that the grains were significantly refined after hot forging. And the secondary phases in this alloy i.e. Mg5(Gd1-x-yNdxYy) and Mg24(Y1-x-yGdxNdy)5phases were fragmented to small particles due to the large strain during hot forging. Tensile tests revealed that mechanical properties were improved due to grain size refinement. Moreover, the as-forged alloy exhibited remarkable age-hardening response and mechanical properties were further improved by ageing treatment. The ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of the peak-aged (T5) alloy are 286 MPa, 245 MPa and 5.6 % at room temperature, and 211 MPa, 103 MPa and 19.4 % at 300°C, respectively.

Effect of remelting processes on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Nimonic 90 superalloy was investigated by OM (optical micrograph), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray) and tensile tests. The results indicated that the microstructure of the as-cast alloy was mainly composed of γ, γ' and carbides which contain Ti and Cr elements. The average grain size of the alloy tends to increase with mould shell temperature ranging from 350°C to 950°C. The strength of the as-cast alloy decreased with the increasing of mold shell temperature, with constant elongation as the mold shell temperature changes.

AbstractFe-Co-V-C quaternary alloys were drop cast and directionally solidified to obtain an in situ composite. It is found that the fully eutectic structure occurs at a composition of Fe - 40.5Co -10.4V- 8.6C (at. %) in a drop-cast alloy. Directional solidification of this composition in a high-temperature optical floating zone furnace produces a well-aligned microstructure, consisting of sub-micron VC fibers (~19% by volume) embedded in a FeCo-5V solid solution matrix containing ~ 1% C. The temperature dependencies of mechanical properties of this composite were examined by tensile tests and the composite was found to have higher yield strength and lower ductility than the matrix.

The thermal parameters of Mg-2.8Nd-1.5Gd-0.5Zn-0.5Zr cast alloy with 0.25 wt.% of erbium (Er) were evaluated by the computer-aided cooling curve thermal analysis(CA CCTA), whereas the microstructure analysis was investigated by the optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy. Results from the cooling curve and microstructure analysis showed that Er altered the grain size of the alloys. In addition, the grain size was reduced by approximately 19.6% with the addition of Er. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that Er formed an Mg-Zn-Nd-Er phase which distributed along the grain boundaries. Furthermore, the mechanical properties were investigated by hardness and tensile tests with Er addition. The addition of 0.25 wt.% of Er significantly improved the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength. In addition, the hardness value of Mg-2.8Nd-1.5Gd-0.5Zn-0.5Zr increased by 13.9% with Er addition.

In this study, 8009 heat resistant aluminum alloy was synthesized by the spray atomization and deposition technique. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy were studied using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and tensile tests. The secondary phases in the microstructure of the spray-deposited alloy were examined. The tensile test results indicate that the spray-deposited 8009 alloy both at room and elevated temperature displays superior tensile strength due to the presence of the thermally stable Al12(Fe,V)3Si particles.

The paper presents the results of studies on the effect of the A390.0 (AlSi17Cu5) alloy overheating to a temperature of 920°C and modification with phosphorus (CuP10) on the resulting mechanical (HB, Rm, R0.2) and plastic (A5and Z) properties. It has been shown that, so-called, "time-thermal treatment" (TTT) of an alloy in the liquid state, consisting in overheating the metal to about 250÷300°C above Tliq, holding at this temperature and rapid cooling, refines the structure and improves the mechanical properties. The primary silicon crystals uniformly distributed in the eutectic and characteristics of the α (Al) solution supersaturated with alloying elements present in the starting alloy composition (Cu, Fe) provide not only an increase of strength at ambient temperature but also at elevated temperature (250°C), which is of particular importance for the automotive applications, especially as regards cast pistons operating in IC.
