Effects of Heat-Treatment on Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Hot Deformed TiB/Ti-6Al-4V Matrix Composites

In this paper, TiB reinforced Ti-6Al-4V matrix composites were successfully fabricated using a spark plasma sintering, hot rolling and heat treating process. (Transformed β-Ti + secondary α-Ti) domains were formed in TiB/TMCs after heat treatment. The size of these domains increases from 2.5 μm to 4.6 μm with the increase of solution time. The aspect ratio of whiskers monotonously decreases along with the solution time extending. The highest ultimate tensile strength of 1332 MPa and yield-strength of 1315 MPa were achieved by (940 °C, 15min+ water-quenching+537 °C, 4h) TMC.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of the Mg97Zn1Y2 alloy prepared by spark plasma sintering of gas atomized powders have been investigated. After consolidation, precipitates were observed to form in the α-Mg solid solution matrix of the Mg97Zn1Y2 alloy. These precipitates consisted of Mg12YZn and Mg24Y5 phases. The density of the consolidated bulk Mg-Zn-Y alloy was 1.86 g/cm3. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation were dependent on the consolidation temperature, which were in the ranges of 280 to 293 MPa and 8.5 to 20.8 %, respectively.

Abstract A hybrid of TiB whiskers and TiC particles reinforced TC4 matrix composites were in-situ synthesized by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using a TC4-0.6wt.% B4C powder mixture at temperatures range from 550°C to 1150°C. The effect of sintering temperature on microstructure, grain size, mechanical properties and densification process of the (TiB+TiC)/ TC4 matrix composites were investigated. The composite sintered at 1050℃ has the highest tensile strength (1129.0 MPa), yield strength (1077.8MPa) and plasticity (7.1%). The aspect ratio of TiB whiskers increases almost linearly below 1050°C and its highest value is 33.2. The grain size of TiC increases with the increase of sintering temperature, and rapid growth occurs in the range of 850°C to 950°C. The composite sintered body appears four shrinkage stages before applying sintering pressure. The corresponding peak temperatures are 663℃, 758℃, 840℃ and 994℃, respectively.

The structure and mechanical properties of materials fabricated by spark plasma sintering of mechanically activated mixture of nickel and aluminum nanopowders were investigated. On account of the elemental powders ratio formation of Ni3Al compound was expected. Relative density of sintered samples was equal to ~ 95 %, microhardness of materials was 6540 MPa. Ultimate tensile strength of samples tested according to three-point bending scheme exceed 1100 MPa.

Magnesium powders were sintered by using spark plasma sintering (SPS) and conventional pressureless sintering (PLS) techniques at sintering temperatures ranged from 552°C to 605°C to investigate effect of sintering method on microstructure and mechanical properties of sintered magnesium. High densed magnesium could be obtained by using spark plasma sintering technique compared to conventional presureless sintering at the same sintering temperature. It was found that the ultimate tensile strength increased with increasing sintering temperature for both the materials sintered by PLS and SPS. The magnesium samples prepared by SPS showed better mechanical properties than those prepared by PLS. The microstructural observations revealed that the grain growth was not significant in SPS process compared to PLS, which would enhance the mechanical properties of the SPS sintered magnesium.

In order to obtain high-strength and high-ductility Al–Si–Cu–Mg alloys, the present research is focused on optimizing the composition of soluble phases, the structure and morphology of insoluble phases, and artificial ageing processes. The results show that the best matches, 0.4 wt% Mg and 1.2 wt% Cu in the Al–9Si alloy, avoided the toxic effect of the blocky Al2Cu on the mechanical properties of the alloy. The addition of 0.6 wt% Zn modified the morphology of eutectic Si from coarse particles to fine fibrous particles and the texture of Fe-rich phases from acicular β-Fe to blocky π-Fe in the Al–9Si–1.2Cu–0.4Mg-based alloy. With the optimization of the heat treatment parameters, the spherical eutectic Si and the fully fused β-Fe dramatically improved the ultimate tensile strength and elongation to fracture. Compared with the Al–9Si–1.2Cu–0.4Mg-based alloy, the 0.6 wt% Zn modified alloy not only increased the ultimate tensile strength and elongation to fracture of peak ageing but also reduced the time of peak ageing. The following improved combination of higher tensile strength and higher elongation was achieved for 0.6 wt% Zn modified alloy by double-stage ageing: 100 °C × 3 h + 180 °C × 7 h, with mechanical properties of ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of ~371 MPa, yield strength (YS) of ~291 MPa, and elongation to fracture (E%) of ~5.6%.

The effects of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), further heat treatment and rolling on the structure and room temperature mechanical properties of the commercial aluminum alloys 6061 (Al-0.9Mg-0.7Si) and 1560 (Al-6.5Mg-0.6Mn) were investigated. It has been shown that the strength of the alloys after ECAP is higher than that achieved after conventional processing. Prior ECAP solution treatment and post-ECAP ageing can additionally increase the strength of the 6061 alloy. Under optimal ageing conditions a yield strength (YS) of 434 MPa and am ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 470 MPa were obtained for the alloy. Additional cold rolling leads to a YS and UTS of 475 and 500 MPa with 8% elongation. It was found that the post-ECAP isothermal rolling of the 1560 alloy resulted in the formation of a nano-fibred structure and a tensile strength (YS = 540 MPa and UTS = 635 MPa) that has never previously been observed in commercial non-heat treatable alloys.

Metal matrix composites were prepared by hot pressing (HP) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) techniques. Ball-milled ironbase powders were consolidated to near full density by these methods at 900°C. The physical and mechanical properties of the resulting composites were investigated. The specimens were tested for resistance to both 3-body and 2-body abrasion. The composites obtained by HP method (at 900°C/35 MPa) had higher density, hardness and resistance to abrasion than those obtained by SPS method.

TiC particulate reinforced Fe matrix composite compacts with controlled interfacial reaction was processed by spark plasma sintering after mechanical alloying. Milled powders were fabricated for 1-5 hours by spex shaker mill with the ball to powder ratio of 25:2. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) based on the Fe-40%TiC system can be synthesized by spark plasma sintering of the D’AE powders with TiH2-graphite powders under vacuum in the temperature range 1273-1473K for 5-20 min. TiC phase was formed by self combustion reaction with temperature increase. The specimen that was formed by sintering Fe-TiC powders displayed a microstructure of uniformly dispersed TiC grain in a continuous metal matrix. The densifications of the TiC-Fe materials were increased as the heat-treatment holding time increasing. In the same time, relative density and hardness of TiC-Fe sintering materials was increased.
