For the first time in Italy, thanks to the contributions of Rodolfo Benini, Statistics became an autonomous discipline, finally released from economical, demographical and social sciences to which was still assimilated. The rigor and the technical refinement of his analysis justify the importance attributed to his statistical contributions, and support the fact that he has been recognised by Corrado Gini as the first round Italian statistician. Starting from the interpretation by Marcello Boldrini of his «tre mirabili opere di sistemazione», I will deepen three of the main themes linked to the statistical methodology addressed by Benini: multiple linear regression, indexes of attraction and repulsion and the distribution of economical variables. I will conclude discussing his relationship with Pareto, whose law Benini first verified on income and later extended to other economical variables.

BACKGROUND. The course and outcomes of primary IgA nephropathy in children are variable. Early therapy for high-risk individuals can help to delay the development of end-stage renal disease.THE AIM: to analysis of risk factors for progression and outcomes in children with IgA nephropathy, taking into account clinical and morphological data at the onset and during follow-up.PATIENTS AND METHODS. A retrospective study of 75 children was carried out; the median follow-up was 28 months. The median age of onset was 9.1 years. Patients were divided into 2 groups: 1st – patients with idiopathic IgA nephropathy (n= 53), 2nd – patients with Shenlein-Henoch purpura (n = 22). The diagnosis of primary IgA nephropathy was morphologically confirmed in all patients. Nephrobiopsy data were classified according to the Oxford scale (MEST-C score). The age of onset and first-time admission, the level of proteinuria and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) at the onset, at 12 months, at the end of follow-up, mean arterial blood pressure, MEST-C score, medication before nephrobiopsy were investigated. Progression was determined as a decrease in GFR less than 60 ml/min/1.73 m2. Outcomes were assessed by absence/presence of remission. We provided a search for factors influencing GFR at the end of the follow-up. Data analysis was performed using Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney, χ2, Fisher, linear regression model, binary logistic regression.RESULTS. Unlike adults, the predictive value of the MEST-C score in children has not been proven and is not associated with a decrease in GFR <60 ml/min/1.73 m2. GFR at the end of follow-up was lower in the idiopathic IgA nephropathy group than in group 2. The use of multiple linear regression predicts GFR on average after 28 months of observation.RESULTS. Unlike adults, the predictive value of the MEST-C scale in children has not been proven and is not associated with a decrease in GFR <60 ml/min/1.73 m2. GFR at the end of follow-up was lower in the idiopathic IgA nephropathy group. The use of multiple linear regression predicts GFR on average after 28 months of observation.CONCLUSIONS. The influence of morphological factors on the outcome and course of IgA nephropathy has not been proven. The level of GFR at the onset, mean blood pressure, and the age of the first-time admission turned out to be independent variables, which made it possible to identify children with an expected decrease in GFR less than 90 ml/min /1.73 m2 to the group of specific outpatient follow-up.

Abstract Purpose To propose a statistical methodology for quantitative analysis of the quality management system (QMS) of pharmaceutical manufacturing. Methods (1) Based on the manufacturing data from two established active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturers in China from 2010 to 2019, the linear regression with Pearson correlation coefficient is used to find the correlations between the proposed QMS operation indicators and performance indicators. (2) A stepwise multiple linear regression is used to identify the independent operation indicators with the biggest impact on a given performance indicator. (3) The Akaike Information Criterion is used to predict the performance indicators based on the operation indicators. Results (1) Correlation: the right-first-time rate correlates strongly with various changes and deviations; the customer complaints correlate with changes, deviations, and CAPAs; the deficiency rate of foreign inspections correlates with deviations and CAPAs; and the CAPA on-time completion rate correlates with changes, deviations, and the ratio of employees in quality. (2) Impact: the right-first-time rate and the customer complaints are mostly impacted by the total deviations; the deficiency rate of foreign inspections is mostly impacted by deviations in equipment and instrument, and deviations due to human error; the CAPA on-time completion rate is mainly impacted by deviations in facility and utilities. (3) Predictability: the right-first-time rate, the customer complaints, the deficiency rate of foreign inspections, and the CAPA on-time completion rate can all be predicted based on the existing data with statistical significance. Conclusions Deviations emerge as a key leading indicator for the performance of QMS. The proposed statistical methodology provides a basis for the data-driven quality management and regulation, whose visibility and predictability are likely to progress as the data accumulates.

Abstract Purpose: To explore the hope level and influencing factors of infertile women with first-time and repeated in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET).Methods: Patients were divided into First (first-time) and Repeat (≥2 cycles) groups, then questionnaire survey was conducted. The questionnaire included demographic information, Herth hope index (HHI) scale, Locke-Wallace short marital-adjustment test scale and social support rating scale. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the associated influencing factors with hope level. Results: A total of 298 IVF-ET patients were recruited in the study, including 150 (50.3%) in the first cycle and 148(49.7%) in the repeated cycle. The HHI score of the repeated cycle was significantly lower than that of the first cycle (34.4 ± 3.5 vs. 37.5± 3.7, P<0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that repeated IVF-ET and age was independently negatively correlated with HHI, with a standardized coefficient β of -0.895 and -0.223, both P<0.001. While high education level (P=0.002), high monthly income(P=0.020), high degree of short marital-adjustment test(P<0.001) and social support rating(P<0.001) were independently positively correlated with HHI.Conclusion: The infertile women with repeated IVF-ET have a low hope level. Maintaining a good marriage adjustment, establishing a good social support and relationship network, may effectively improve their hope level.
