Background: Caring is the core of nursing and should be cultivated in student nurses. However, there are serious concerns about the caring concern in the clinical environment and in nursing education. Clinical instructors are ideally positioned to care for student nurses so that they in turn, can learn to care for their patients.Methods: A descriptive, comparative, cross-sectional and correlational quantitative research design with convenience sampling was conducted to describe the perceptions of junior student nurses (n = 148) and senior student nurses (n = 168) regarding clinicalin structor caring. A structured self administered questionnaire using the Nursing Student Perceptions of Instructor Caring (NSPIC) (Wade & Kasper, 2006) was used. Descriptive statistics and hypotheses testing using parametric and non parametric methods were conducted. The reliability of the NSPIC was determined.Results: Respondents had a positive perception of their clinical instructors' caring. No relationship could be found between the course the respondents were registered for, the frequency of contact with a clinical instructor, the ages of the respondents and their perceptions of clinical instructor caring. The NSPIC was found to be reliable if one item each from two of the subscales were omitted.Conclusions: Student nurses perceived most strongly that a caring clinical instructor made them feel confident, specifically when he/she showed genuine interest in the patients and their care, and when he/she made them feel that they could be successful.

Nursing training is a blend of both theoretical and practical learning.  Students learn practically in the clinical environment. Despite the progression in nursing education, in some clinical settings, the effective teaching behavior of clinical instructors is absent that affects student learning. The aim of this study is to assess nursing students' perception of a good clinical preceptor. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used for the study. Data were collected from all 4th year nursing students (n=130) in the Department of Nursing at the Faculty of Medical Technical Sciences, Alzaiem Alazhari University (AAU). The result shows that 68 out of 130 (52.3%) nursing students considered teaching ability as very important followed by competencies 57 (43.8%).

Background: The quality of nursing care rendered today is markedly reducing and the amount of time spent with patients listening to and explaining issues concerning their conditions is gradually diminishing. The therapeutic touch and the listening ear of the nurse are no longer accessible to the patient. Understanding what non-technical skills are and their relevance for healthcare practitioners has become a new area of consideration. Although recent literature has highlighted the necessity of introducing soft skills training and assessment within medical education, nursing education is yet to fully embrace this skills training.Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore nursing students’ understanding of the concept of soft skills and to acquire their perception on the need for soft skills training to promote quality nursing care.Methods: A quantitative research design with descriptive and explorative strategies was used. One hundred and ten nursing students were sampled after permission to conduct the study was requested and obtained from the University of KwaZulu-Natal Ethics Committee.Results: The results indicated that a majority (68.8%) of respondents understood the concept of soft skills and agreed with the definition of ‘soft skills’. They furthermore agreed that soft skills should be part of the training that student nurses receive during their professional training.Conclusion: The study revealed that there is a need for nursing students to be educated in soft skills and that this will enhance their job performances in the clinical environment and improve the way in which they communicate with their clients.

Background: Competencies of health care workers, including nurses, often do not meet the health needs of populations. The clinical learning environment (CLE) is vital in socialising neophyte student nurses to display the desired competencies. Student nurses are however confronted with challenges, especially in the CLE, during this process.Aim: This article shares three validated guidelines to support professional nurses and nurse educators in facilitating appropriate professional socialisation of student nurses in the CLE.Setting: The study was conducted in an 832-bed academic hospital and nine nursing education institutions (NEIs) that offered the nursing programme concerned in a province in South Africa.Method: A sequential, exploratory, mixed-methods study was conducted and qualitative data were collected from two purposive samples, consisting of seven focus group interviews and field notes. Five themes that emerged from the integrated data guided the instrument design to collect data quantitatively from 277 educators. Experts validated 10 guidelines to a set of criteria, which was developed combining all data.Results: Qualitative and quantitative research evidenced that the CLE mostly did not support student nurses during professional socialisation. A few role models’ behaviour was noteworthy, while student supervision was inadequate. The CLE was stressful, lacked in resources, marked by uncoordinated student placement, insufficient communication and inadequate preparation of student nurses. This evidence informed the development of the guidelines.Conclusions: The guidelines were (1) the empowerment of role models through reflective practice, (2) capacity building of professional nurses and nurse educators as clinical supervisors by means of intervention strategies and (3) adopting a multifaceted approach in the creation of a positive CLE. These guidelines could facilitate appropriate professional socialisation of student nurses.

Abstract Background Clinical instructors have an important role in advancing nursing students to achieve the program objectives. Nursing student perceptions about the characteristics of an effective clinical instructors may help programs improve clinical instruction. As such, the purpose of this study was to understand the characteristics perceived by students to define an effective clinical instructor. Methods In this qualitative descriptive study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students. The sample was purposefully selected. MAXQDA software was used for the content analysis. The codes were organized into subcategories and consolidated into categories. Results Data saturation was reached with twelve participants, including seven women and five men, between 21 and 36 years of age. General and special characteristics were the two main categories that emerged from the data. These categories were defined by nine subcategories including internal motivation, professional acceptability, clinical competency, teaching skill, clinical experience, values, being a faculty member, appropriate appearance, and communication skills. Conclusions Effective clinical instructors have a specific characteristics identified by student. The most important characteristics of effective clinical instructors were related to communication and teaching skills, internal motivation, and professional appearance. More research is necessary to determine the relationship between the characteristics, instructor competency, and student learning outcomes.

Background: The improvement of nursing student competency currently is still being an issue for the majority of nursing education institutions in Indonesia. This is due to partnership with hospitals has not been supported by adequate policies and other factors. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the appropriate model in improving student competency in a clinical study. Design used in this study was observational study with cross-sectional approach. Methods: The research design used cross-sectional approach with involving five hospitals (Fatmawati Jakarta Hospital, Hasan Sadikin Bandung Hospital, Kariadi Semarang Hospital, Sardjito Yogyakarta Hospital, Soetomo Surabaya Hospital) and five universities namely Muhammadiyah Jakarta University, Padjajaran Bandung University, Gadjah Mada Jogjakarta University, Diponegoro Semarang University,  Airlangga Surabaya University. Three hundred and eighty-four participants were recruited from these sites. Data were analyzed  using multiple logistic regression. Results: The result showed that partnership contributed 3,36 times, the patient variations 2,96 times, job description of clinical educator 2,30 times, a role model 2,28 times, expertise of faculty educator  2,08 times, toward the achievement of student competency in clinical study. Conclusions: It can be concluded that partnership aspect, the patient variation, job description of clinical educator, role model, expertise of faculty educator, and level of education have significant role to improve the achievement of student competency in clinical study. The results of this study can be used by nursing educational institutions, hospitals and government to organize nursing education model that has been present for more optimal achievement of student competencies.

Background: Nurses should have a good level of e-health literacy to help patients utilize e-health information. Objective: To measure e-health literacy skills and contribute factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 2209 nursing student in Indonesia (October–November 2019) using eHeals. Result: The overall eHealth literacy was 4 (Scale 1–5). There were statistically significant differences between e-Heals score with contribute factors (<0.001). Conclusion: Indonesian nursing students already have basic necessary skills of e-health.

Emotional caring and curiosity are associated with exceptional patient care. Combined, the characteristics form empathetic curiosity. Little is known about nursing students' curiosity. Our quantitative research study provides insight into connections between caring and curiosity of nursing students both early and late in their programs of study. Students early their program perceived more caring from others toward them than the students late in the program. The students did not differ in their curiosity or caring levels for others. Our findings indicate a positive relationship between caring and curiosity. Nursing student curiosity may be reflective of their preparation as professionals.

BackgroundUndergraduate nursing students are expected to be responsive and competency, particularly during a disaster. Working as health volunteers is one strategy to develop these skills. However, little research has investigated the experiences of nursing students working as health volunteers during a disaster.ObjectivesThis study aimed to investigate undergraduate nursing student perceptions and experiences of being health volunteer during the Mt. Merapi eruption.Methods: A non-experimental, descriptive design was used. A sampling of 25 undergraduate nurse students who worked as health volunteers during the Mt. Merapi eruption completed a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted open- and closed-ended questions, and was used to measure students' self awareness and what they have learned. Additional questions were asked to prioritize attributes required to be health volunteers. Data were aggregated and analyzed using a simple, descriptive analysis.ResultsUndergraduate nursing students had internal motivation of being health volunteers during disaster. Findings of this study illustrated benefits, future impact of being health volunteer, and required attributes of being good health volunteers.ConclusionsStudents' perceptions and experiences during disasters underscores important factors in the promotion of disaster management competency in nursing education.

Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Korean version of Nursing Student Perceptions of Dishonesty Scale (NSPDS). Methods: The English NSPDS was translated into Korean after going through a translation and reverse translation process. Data for this study were collected from 433 student nurses from 8 universities in Korea, who had clinical practice experience. The final data were evaluated using SPSS 20.0 and AMOS 22.0 for exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability was tested using Cronbach's ⍺ and test-retest reliability. Results: The exploratory factor analysis showed that 15 items were deleted and 9 subscales were changed into 8 subscales, and the initial 67 items were reduced to 52 items. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted with 8 subscales and 52 items. The standardized regression coefficients of all the items were statistically significant and between .66 and .93. Convergent validity confirmed that the critical ratio was greater than .85, and the average variance extracted was greater than .53. The criterion-related validity confirmed a negative correlation between student nurses’ ethical value and the Korean version of NSPDS. Reliability was confirmed with a Cronbach's ⍺ of .80~.95. The test-retest confirmed that the correlation coefficient showed significant positive correlations between .68 and .76 in the subscales. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that the Korean version of NSPDS is an appropriate and reliable tool for identifying dishonesty perceptions among Korean student nurses.

Background: Nurses are supposed to be able to show empathy to patients. Empathy is capability to feel the emotion, thought, and condition of the patient without involving self emotion. Capability of showing empathy in nurses is builtsince the period of education. Every stage in nursing education at nursing study program has different learning activities and load of materials. The difference may be affected by capability of showing empathy in students. The objective of this study is to identify difference in empathy capability of nursing students of Faculty of Medicine UGMMethod: This was a quantitative study with cross sectional design. Samples were taken through purposive proportional sampling involving 88 nursing students at Faculty of Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada undergoing academic education (batch 2009 to 2012) and clinical education (batch 2007 and 2008). Empathy capability was assessed using Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy – Nursing Student Version R (JSPE-R).Results: Average score of empathy capability was 113.26 with standard deviation 10.45. There was difference in empathy capability of students of batch 2007 to 2012 (p=0.014). Average score of empathy capability of the students decreased along with the duration of education. There was no difference in empathy capability based on gender (p=0.516), age (p=0.668), ethnic group (p=0.167), and stage of education (p=0.541). There was difference in score of standing in the patient shoes between academic and clinical students (p=0.022).Conclusion: There is difference in empathy capability in nursing students from different batch at Faculty of Medicine UGM.
