Tertiary institutions in South Africa are experiencing alarming undergraduate drop-out rates. This has partly been attributed to students’ inadequate preparation, and failure to gather information on, and planning for, their careers. The need for sound career guidance at the high school level is key, making the role of Life Orientation (LO) increasingly prominent. The aim of this study was to determine what benefits high school learners derive from attending career talks. To this end, a qualitative study was conducted with Grade 10 learners studying STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) at a township high school in Mamelodi, Tshwane. Data were collected using a qualitative questionnaire and analysed thematically. The findings demonstrated the importance of role models sharing information on their careers and work experiences. Another finding pertained to the importance of information on diverse careers, for the development of learners’ career self-efficacy as students of STEM in a township high school context. The findings highlight the importance of LO teachers organising career workshops. The study will benefit the Department of Basic Education, businesses, and employers as key stakeholders, by helping to enhance the career development of future employees and entrepreneurs.

As computer literacy and programming ability increase at the elementary and junior high school levels, more thought must be given to the role of computers in mathematics learning. One step to be taken at the high school level is to accept Gerald Rising's (1983) suggestion to separate computer science and mathematics. This proposal is an excellent one and would help us to focus on ways to improve mathematics learning through the use of computers.

With the increasing emphasis in the classroom being placed on “;learning by discovery,” high school students are encouraged to see interrelationships within subject areas embraced by their courses. This has led, not unnaturally, to interdisciplinary analyses of certain key themes in science and in life generally at the high school level. One of the fundamental tasks of any science teacher is to exhort his students to find connections between physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics as a means of unifying an approach to the physical sciences.

Perception of high school managers in Fortaleza on the importance of physical education as curriculum component.BACKGROUND: The Basic Education in Brazil has been through hard moments during 2010 decade. Among these moments, can be put in the spotlight the advance from the MP n° 746/2016 into 13.415/2017 Law and the institutionalization of the New High School level in Brazil. Due to this, many struggling movements took place in order to maintain the Physical Education as an essencial discipline in Basic Education. OBJECTIVE: The research investigated the perception of managers of high schools, belonging to the public network of the state of Ceará, Brazil, on the importance of PE classes. METHODS: The study is characterized as a field and exploratory research, with a quantitative and qualitative cross-sectional character, with the application of a Likert-type questionnaire, with multiple choice items about each question, varying the options between “total disagree”, “Partially disagree”, “partially agree” and “totally agree”. Managers of regular and professional schools participated in the study. Thus, the sample of the present study was composed of 40 regular and full-time school managers from a total of 119 schools, making up 33% of the schools listed as public for the current study. It is well known that the number of women in scientific careers is significantly lower than the number of men, especially in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) areas. Considering that science should be used for the benefit of all, by excluding women from the production process of scientific knowledge, we are giving up of 50% of the intellectual capacity to different science fields. Thus, the Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences, whose mission is to expand society's access to scientific knowledge, promotes the project "Girls in the Museum", aimed at the continuous education of seven high-school female students in topics of astronomy with the goal of stimulating them into liking science. Concurrently with the project, interviews were conducted to evaluate the initiative according to the participants' perspectives, as well as to understand their perceptions about science prior and after six months of the project. We found that the participants were satisfied with the format and content of the project, comprised of theoretical talks and practical workshops. The resulting discourses show that they now view science as something closer to their lives and are more confident to promote scientific discussions. These results show the importance of providing young females with role models they can look up, especially at the age when they are about to make decisions concerning their future career.

In Indonesia, education has many problems to take into consideration. One of them is that SMP (Sekolah Menengah Pertama/Junior high school) graduates could not continue to SMA (Sekolah Menengah Atas/Senior high school) level. This research was aimed at investigating accurate data and information regarding strategic management administered by education and culture office of Sukabumi city in improving educational participation. This research applies strategic management model proposed by Hunger-Wheelen. This study was qualitative using case study. Data were collected using interview, documentation, and observation. The Education and Culture Office of Sukabumi City had no specific vision and mission for the implementation of 12-year secondary education. The strategies included providing financial support in many programs like kartu pintar, Direct Help Card, and scholarships for poor families. The implementations were based on programs, budgets and procedures. In general, the implementation had been successful but it has two programs which had not succeeded namely retrieval program and program to support student who were prone to drop out. Strategy evaluation was done according to the system, types, and the management.
