Media are an indispensable partner in health communication, but there is often concern about how the media cover health and science issues. These critiques tend to be based on analyses of news content that don’t consider the production process of the content. Using a media sociology framework, the article examines the news production process of the Ebola outbreak from the perspective of Ghanaian journalists. The study finds that existing and new routines influenced what the media produced. This study reiterates the call for public health to work closely with the media and to provide translated health information in multilingual low-literate societies.

The presence of news factors in journalistic products has been abundantly researched, but investigations into their actual impact on the news production process are scarce. This study provides a large-scale analysis of why news factors matter: Whether, how, and which news factors affect the prominence of news items and does this differ per outlet type? A manual content analysis of print, online, and television news demonstrates that a larger total number of news factors in a story positively predict an item’s length and likelihood of front-page publication or likelihood of being a newscast’s opening item. News factors ‘conflict’ and ‘eliteness’ have the strongest impact, mixed evidence was found for ‘proximity’ and ‘personification’, whereas relationships with ‘negativity’, ‘influence and relevance’, and ‘continuity’ were mostly insignificant. Fewer differences than expected emerged between outlet types (popular vs quality press). Especially for television news, outlet type (public vs commercial broadcaster) hardly mattered.

Between the mid-1920s and the early 1930s German photojournalism experienced a profound, far-reaching upheaval. Up until this time, the illustrated mass media had favoured the reproduction of single photos, but during this brief period the photo-essay rose to prominence. Photographs and texts were integrated into a new, complex narrative unity: photoreportage. This article aims to reconstruct the historical conditions under which modern photo-reportage arose during the Weimar Republic. It will also revise certain accepted judgements about the history of photojournalism between the world wars. The development of modern photojournalism has until now been identified almost exclusively with the achievements of individual protagonists, mainly prominent photographers. Although these individuals played an important role in the production process of photoreportage, they were rarely consulted regarding editorial questions and layout. In order to better understand the economic development of photoreportage and its growth as a medium, it is necessary to examine the editorial work being done behind the scenes at the magazines and newspapers of the time. This article will therefore focus more on the development of the media and economic macrostructures at play in the emergence and growth of photo-reportage, and less on individual photographers’ contributions and photojournalistic output. It ultimately shows that the consolidation of modern photo-reportage was the result of closely connected media-related and social developments, commercial strategies and aesthetic decisions that went far beyond the agency of individuals.

Examining the morerecent material qualitatively, the article shows that although manyreligions have been historically visible in the news, they have mostrecently become more frequent in the debate sections than in thenews sections. Cartoon with its concise, simple and attractive characteristic allows the reader to digest the ideas of the cartoonist. As one of the products of mass media, a cartoon is never neutral and value-free, it oftenly carries an ideology. Culture and the domination of an ideology contribute to the production process of the symbols that are articulated in a cartoon. This qualitative research used a methodology of critical study based on image-based research, which reveals the visual image as a research foundation. In the process of interpretation, the researchers are conducting a dialect with the text as an object. Then analyze it so that it becomes cohesive. After that, it could obtaine a relative reality. Benny and Mice cartoon implicitly states that heterosexuals are the 'normal' sex relationships. Beyond that, is a deviation. Deserves to be blamed, humiliated even ridiculed. Benny and Mice cartoon show that transsexual / transvestite / transgender as a source of fear. The package of it pictorial and verbal language wrapped in hyperbole and joke, and becomes the 'seeds' of homophobia amid the hegemony of heterosexual community.
