Advanced air mobility (AAM) refers to urban transportation systems that move people and goods by air. This has significant implications for reducing traffic congestion in cities and for providing an integrated approach to urban mobility. With the emergence of drone technology and the possibility of more autonomous aircraft, interest has grown considerably in AAM. Unsettled Issues in Advanced Air Mobility Certification discusses the impact of AAM on private sector solution providers including aerospace and technology companies and goes into solutions for urban planners and transportation professionals for better integration across all AAM modes.

Abstract Mauritius has undergone massive developments during the past several years. However, along with economic progress, these developments have also been the cause of trouble for the Mauritian population as they have worsened the problem of traffic congestion. Providing state-of-the-art transportation systems is thus crucial for the proper functioning of the Mauritian economy and society. Hence, the paper explores the repercussions that traffic congestion has on the society, economy, and individual. Also, the paper seeks to examine the impact of traffic congestion on several aspects, such as worker productivity, economic growth, commuter health and safety, travel reliability, and the environment. Questionnaires have been helpful tools in obtaining quantitative data. A sample of 100 respondents, consisting of people travelling to and from Ebene and Port Louis on a daily or regular basis, was selected using convenience sampling. The data obtained were then analysed through the SPSS software. Results indicated that traffic congestion negatively impacted on various aspects of the society and economy. The study has depicted that the respondents have affirmed that traffic congestion has an adverse effect on the society, the economy, and the individual. The paper discusses important practical issues relating to traffic congestion in Mauritius, its sources and its effects on the society, the economy, and the individual. Thus, it provides insights to the Mauritian Government and policy-makers on the ways in which they can measure traffic congestion, manage traffic more effectively, adopt appropriate policies, and invest in infrastructural projects. This paper is apt, original, and a must-read as it discusses such issues as traffic congestion, its roots, and its repercussions on the Mauritian society, economy, and individual.

The interaction between transportation systems, Internet connectivity, and location-aware mobile applications is increasingly relevant to urban mobility. Location-based apps not only assist individuals in more efficient movement through urban spaces but also impact the way individuals experience the city. More recently, location-based taxi-hailing apps are also a part of ongoing transformations in urban mobility. These apps are increasingly popular in the United States, and this trend is spreading to countries outside the Global North. While taxi-hailing apps have been studied in the context of infrastructure and planning, law, and regulations, little scholarship exists on the daily uses of these apps and how they are embedded within a context of ongoing surveillance, politics of mobility, and digital literacy. This chapter examines the impact of location-based ride-hailing applications on daily urban mobility in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, one of the largest cities in the Global South. Through a qualitative study including taxi drivers and passengers who use location-based taxi-hailing apps, we investigate how a group of passengers and drivers in Rio de Janeiro integrates ride-hailing apps into their daily routines and how these apps influence mobility within the city. The findings suggest that while location-based services have normally been seen as a threat to privacy, in this group’s case they are a source of security. Furthermore, while taxi-hailing apps were overwhelmingly perceived by the participants as adding convenience to their daily lives, they are still embedded into a politics of mobility, invisibility, surveillance, data collection, and control that is often invisible to passengers and drivers alike.

One of the fastest growing areas in the world is the Asia-Pacific region. With anticipated acceleration in motorization and potentially-damaging unplanned urban sprawl, the region will be threatened by problems of traffic congestion, pollution and road hazards. Several countries in the region have taken a variety of proactive measures to ensure that the urban transportation systems are designed and operated in a smart, sustainable and safe manner. This chapter identifies the policies and practices in South Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore and Australia, and seeks to draw lessons from these on how transportation schemes can be implemented elsewhere in Asia.

Traffic congestion has become increasingly prevalent in many urban areas, and researchers are continuously looking into new ways to resolve this pertinent issue. Autonomous vehicles are one of the technologies expected to revolutionize transportation systems. To this very day, there are limited studies focused on the impact of autonomous vehicles in heterogeneous traffic flow in terms of different driving modes (manual and self-driving). Autonomous vehicles in the near future will be running parallel with manual vehicles, and drivers will have different characteristics and attributes. Previous studies that have focused on the impact of autonomous vehicles in these conditions are scarce. This paper proposes a new cellular automata model to address this issue, where different autonomous vehicles (cars and buses) and manual vehicles (cars and buses) are compared in terms of fundamental traffic parameters. Manual cars are further divided into subcategories on the basis of age groups and gender. Each category has its own distinct attributes, which make it different from the others. This is done in order to obtain a simulation as close as possible to a real-world scenario. Furthermore, different lane-changing behavior patterns have been modeled for autonomous and manual vehicles. Subsequently, different scenarios with different compositions are simulated to investigate the impact of autonomous vehicles on traffic flow in heterogeneous conditions. The results suggest that autonomous vehicles can raise the flow rate of any network considerably despite the running heterogeneous traffic flow.

Over the past couple of decades the advancements in the areas of information and computational technology allowed for a variety of intelligent transportation systems developments and deployments. This study investigates an advanced traveler information system (ATIS) and (or) an advanced public transit system (APTS) adaptive and real-time transit routing component. The proposed methodology is applied to bus routes with fixed, predefined bus line alignments. It is shown that routing buses on such systems can be modeled in real-time by employing an associated Markov chain with reward model to minimize the impact of congested traffic conditions on the travelers and the overall operation cost of the transit system. A case study using a traffic and transit data from a real-world bus line was used to apply the proposed bus routing approach. It was found that under certain traffic congestion conditions buses should be re-routed to minimize their travel time and the associated system costs. The hypothetical congestion scenarios investigated show that individual bus travel time delays range between 50 and 740 s when the proposed adaptive routing is employed. The proposed methodology is also suitable for application to transit systems that run on a demand-adaptive basis (the bus line alignment changes with the travelers demand). Additional calibration and future integration of the system into specific ATIS and (or) APTS user services will be investigated.

Traffic congestion, rising pollution and urban sprawl all deeply affect the quality of life in cities of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), making investing in the transition towards a low-carbon economy a key priority. Only through the development of sustainable means of transport and urban mobility can healthy living environments be regained, and the impact of climate change mitigated, all the while bolstering local growth. In this context, the hereby article strives to analyse the overall transport investments and urban mobility investments in the CEE region. It provides a data-driven overview of the absorption and implementation of the EU Cohesion Policy, and distribution of EU Structural Funds invested in Central and Eastern Europe in the transport and urban mobility sectors, over the two EU financial programming periods of 2007–2013 and 2014–2020.


This volume provides a comprehensive analytic contribution to a crucial topic within development economics based on 15 years of continued data collection and research efforts. Abstract The significant of public transport of cities in many developing countries lies in the fundamental fact that mobility and accessibility are essential for economic growth and of necessity to provide efficient and effective movement for goods and services. The collapse of public intra-city transport system paved way for the rise of motorcycles as means of public transportation in Nigeria. This paper discusses the impact of commercial motorcycle operation as a means of urban transportation. Of the 200 questionnaires administered, 191 questionnaires were received for analysis using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Secondary data was also sourced to serve as complement to the primary data, thus allowing for a robust research. Descriptive statistical tools such as percentages were adopted to present the socio - economic characteristics in the area. Findings showed that the majority of the users are adult between the aged 31 and 40 years. Most of them (53.8%) are married and are fairly educated. Furthermore, it was recommended that the Nigerian government should provide employment opportunities for our teeming youth as this will go a long way in the reduction of number of youth who as a result of unemployment took to motorcycle riding business.

Background: The present situation in megacities is characterized by traffic congestion, capacity limits of public transportation systems. In addition, environmental regulations due to potential health risks will have an increasing impact on urban transportation systems. Aim: In this paper, we describe major technology trends in transportation and in information and communication systems which will influence urban transportation in future megacities. Based on these trends a vision of a sustainable urban transportation system is developed. Method: In a first step, trends in urban development and the individual needs are analyzed. Digitalization of transportation and communication technologies offer new business opportunities for Artificial Intelligence (AI) based services. Results: The intelligent combination of advanced transportation technologies in large buildings and AI based services enables a vision of Mobility on Demand, representing a flexible and sustainable urban transportation in future megacities. Conclusion: The vision Mobility on Demand illustrates the effective and flexible integration of individual transportation needs into public transportation systems. Depending on the standards of future individual vehicles such vehicles could be integrated seamlessly into the urban Maglev transportation system.
