Yoruba Political Ideology in Akinwumi Ishola’s plays and the challenge of leadership crisis in Africa

This paper is an attempt at reflective self-awareness and hermeneutical analysis of the African Yoruba Political Ideology distilled from plays by Akinwumi Ishola. It is a bid to appraise this Ideology and assess how it aids social consciousness, good governance and political stability. The real value of hermeneutical analysis is to aid clarity of thought that enables a comparison of ideas. This will facilitate the contemporary relevance of the end result and its adoption as a framework of a remedy to leadership malady plaguing Africa. The aim of this paper is to propose a socio-political philosophy that is birthed by the peculiar challenge of the dearth of good leadership in Africa and which attempts to address the leadership and governance crisis as a whole. Realizing that Africa is not a mono-cultural entity, the paper aspires to bring forth ideas that will have universal claim upon all. Our examples and references however are drawn from Yoruba cultural background and the plays to be analysed are Saworo Ide and Agogo Eewo.

In the introduction the following section stand out in my mind: “”¦.. ..that world-integration is impelled by the divine order even when led by greedy trans-nationals trying to dominate the world ”¦.. be prepared to accept world integration as a normal tendency that must eventually end up in the full political and economic integration of the planet. This does not mean that everything is fine with the integration process: As with any other process involving human actions, world-integration is tainted with sin and evil.” I share the writer’s sentiments and would add that since world-integration and globalisation are inevitable consequences of economic development, as Christians our responsibility is to ensure that the process is equitable, sustainable and in conformity with the teachings of Christ. The players in the globalisation process are none other than ourselves as owners, employers, employees and clients of the trans-nationals spearheading the process. I have come to the conclusion, and this is purely personal, that in a country like Ghana which, since independence in 1957, has seen every shade and manner of political ideology, dictatorships and democracies: “The interests of global trans-nationals are ironically contributing to political stability. With this stability civil society through its organisations and associations has the opportunity to compel government to respond to the needs of its citizens and thus address burning issues such as poverty, unemployment and pollution.” I hold the view that in the African context political stability, good governance and respect for human rights must be an integral aspect of García’s NF. This is due to the fact that a stable environment is a productive environment.

The focus of this study is to answer the subject matter of how the concept of the nation-state according to Abdullah Munsyi in the constellation of Malay Islamic political ideology in the 19th century AD and how is the relevance of the concept of the current Indonesian nation state ? The study used the conscience morale theory of Ernest Renan and the social contract theory initiated by J. J. Roussae. This research is included in the library research category and uses historical approaches and political philosophy. The primary data in this study are Abdullah Musnyi's Hikayat Abdullah book published by Yayasan Karyawan, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2007 and secondary data, in the form of books, journal articles, papers, and others related to research problems. the findings of the research are: 1). In accordance with the theory of conscience morale Ernest Renan and the social contract theory initiated by J. J. Roussae, Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munsyi was the originator of nationalism. Through his most important work, Hikayat Abdullah, he put forward the formulation of Malay identity in the formulation of the nation which was understood as a Malay tribe or race who had the right to be involved in determining the Malay political format not as a community under a political system that was authoritarian. 2). His closeness with the British colonial side, thus forming the liberal thinking he obtained from Raffles and his friends. He not only dismantled the manipulation of royal ideology, but at the same time put forward a new view of the existence of a humanist individual. 3). The understanding of nationality has egalitarian values ​​that are very relevant to the current Indonesian context, especially the values ​​of equality (egalitarianism) in the midst of the emergence of conflicts in various conflicts today. Likewise the concept of nation-state is closely related to nationalism and good governance where good governance is based on the absolute existence of transparency, open participation, and accountability in all state activities at every level of state management, so that a clean government is formed. Keywords: Abdullah Munsyi, Nation-State, and Malay Political ideology

ABSTRACT Introduction: This paper aims to analyze how the Center of Government (CoG) operates as units responsible for conducting the presidential agenda in contemporary Brazil. Materials and Methods: The study applied the theoretical approach of CoG as a governance arrangement and used qualitative and quantitative data to reach its objective. Besides the bibliographic review on the literature and official documents, the study synthesizes and deepens empirical data and information from a joint research project covering the period of political stability in Brazil, from 1995 to 2014, when elected presidents ended their terms. Results: The empirical findings confirm that CoG is a flexible and dynamic phenomenon. It puts a critical perspective on the normative “good governance” approach that overvalues its technical dimension and neglects its political aspect. Discussion: The inquiry results shed light on the importance of the relation between politics and policy, by demonstrating that CoG’s configuration and functions vary due to multiple causes, each president’s priority policy agenda is implemented with different strategies and; the prioritized policies follow a unique coordination logic inside the Brazilian federal government.

Until recently, with some notable exceptions, contemporary political philosophy has had little to say about topics of “governance.” Unlike earlier thinkers, contemporary theorists have largely ignored topics such as bureaucracy, institutions, corruption, public integrity, and public service. Accordingly, Rothstein and Jan Teorell’s idea of “Quality of Government” (“QoG”), combined with the work of other political scientists and public administration theorists, invites a welcome and long overdue return to topics of governance for political philosophy. This chapter first aims to clarify the precise question to which “QoG” is intended to be answer, that is, the question of “good governance” and distinguish it from more traditional philosophical concerns with justice and legitimacy. We review the limited philosophical landscape, and then critique of the QoG as a theory of good governance. Finally, we tentatively outline an alternative account, and consider directions for future research.

No one can claim to have thought seriously about the question “How ought I to live?”, the guiding question of political philosophy, without having confronted the powerful answer to it supplied by hedonism. In thinking about hedonism today, we may begin from that thinker who was both very important to and early in its history: Plato. Of the dialogs that have come down to us as Plato's, only the Philebus takes as its direct aim the examination of pleasure's claim to be the human good. The Philebus culminates in the suggestions that the need for self-awareness or self-knowledge may finally be more fundamental to all human beings (and hence to hedonists) than is even the desire for pleasure, and that the experience of at least some pleasures constitutes a great obstacle to precisely the self-knowledge we seek. The Philebus is important today not only because it contains a searching analysis of hedonism but also because it compels us to raise the crucial question of the precise nature of “the good” with which we are justly most concerned—our own or that of others—a question whose centrality to self-knowledge we are in danger of forgetting.

Leo Strauss was one of the few political philosophers of the twentieth century to study the relation between faith and political philosophy. Yet Strauss's notoriously esoteric style has led scholars to wildly diverse interpretations of his views: his defenders believe that Strauss supports biblical religion as an instrument of truth and morality, while his critics contend that he opposes biblical religion for its biases while appreciating its political usefulness. I shall argue that Strauss is deeply opposed to the doctrines and political usage of biblical religion. For biblical doctrines clash with his theory of natural right, the latter being the basis of political stability, according to Strauss.

Corruption is a complex social, political and economic problem and occurs in every country with different levels. Corruption will complicate democracy and governance of a country. To overcome the problem of corruption, the government must implement good governance. This study aims to provide empirical evidence regarding the effect of elements of good governance on the level of corruption in Southeast Asia. Good governance variables are presented by six variables: voice and accountability, political stability and absence of violence / terrorism, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law and control of corruption. Meanwhile, the level of corruption is measured using the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). The research sample was selected using the purposive sampling method and produced a sample of 8 countries and the observation period was carried out in 2009-2018 or as many as 10 years, so the number of samples in this study were 80 samples. Corruption level data used in this study uses the Corruption Perceptions Index (Transparency International), while the good governance data used in this study uses the Worldwide Governance Indicators (World Bank). The research methodology used in this study is multiple linear regression analysis with the IBM SPSS Statistics 24 program. The results showed that the variable voice and accountability, political stability and absence of violence / terrorism, and rule of law had no effect on the level of corruption, whereas the government variable effectiveness, regulatory quality, and control of corruption affect the level of corruption.

Good governance often seems to have accelerated educational performance. Stepping onto the contribution of governance to the education, this paper examines the effect of Worldwide Governance Indicators produced by Kaufmann et al. (1999) on Educational Performance (EP) of Nepal during the years from 1996 to 2018. The six indicators of WGIs: political stability and absence of violence, government effectiveness, voice and accountability, regulatory quality, control of corruption and rule of law are used as independent variables, and the educational performance (student learning achievement and education index) as a dependent variable.  The results, based on the data collected from the secondary sources, derived from multiple-line graphs and the regression model shows that the majority of WGIs insignificantly explained the educational performance across the years. One indicator namely government effectiveness is found as a negative significant predictor of EP. The findings of this study suggest to reform in the existing level of WGIs for the better educational performance.
