Introduction: Medical undergraduates need to possess the ability to acquire knowledge on a wide range of subjects over short period of time. Medical schools worldwide use different methodologies to select ideal candidates, which include cognitive factors and non-cognitive factors. A proper selection will minimize failures during the beginning semesters and will ensure student’s capacity to withstand the standard of training. Therefore, we have decided to study the impact of cognitive and non-cognitive factors in predicting the academic success among medical students. Material & Methods: The study was a survey of 150 first year medical students of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh, admitted in 2018. A data was collected from the Department of Anatomy for initial three part completion tests performance and class attendance, which was tabulated along with the information received from the questionnaire i.e. age, gender, percent secured and language in school, National eligibility cum entrance test (NEET) attempt and marks, residence, category for premedical (PMT) selection (general/ non-resident Indians (NRIs)/ handicap), parents occupation, siblings, family (nuclear/joint/rural/urban), hobbies, time management during PC (part completion) tests, coaching before PMT) given to each student separately. Observation & Results: Students were observed to lie in three groups according to their performance in PC tests: group I (>60%), group II (50-59.9%), group III (<50%). All the cognitive and non-cognitive factors were compared. Conclusion: Both cognitive and non-cognitive factors play an important role in the outcome of a medical student. Factors positively influencing the performance of a selected candidate in medical schools cannot be simply based on previous academic performance.

Quiz-based and collaborative teaching strategies have previously been found to be efficient for the improving meaningful learning of physiology during lectures. These approaches have, however, not been investigated during laboratory exercises. In the present study, we compared the impact of solving quizzes individually and in groups with conventional teaching on the immediate learning during a laboratory exercise. We implemented two quizzes in a mandatory 4-h laboratory exercise on baroreflex physiology. A total of 155 second-year medical students were randomized to solve quizzes individually ( intervention group I, n = 57), in groups of three to four students ( intervention group II, n = 56), or not to perform any quizzes (control; intervention group III, n = 42). After the laboratory exercise, all students completed an individual test, which encompassed two recall questions, two intermediate questions, and two integrated questions. The integrated questions were of moderate and advanced difficulty, respectively. Finally, students completed an evaluation form. Intervention group I reached the highest total test scores and proved best at answering the integrated question of advanced difficulty. Moreover, there was an overall difference between groups for student evaluations of the quality of the teaching, which was highest for intervention group II. In conclusion, solving quizzes individually during a laboratory exercise may enhance learning, whereas solving quizzes in groups is associated with higher student satisfaction.

Background: Undergraduate outdoor orientation programs facilitate students’ transition into college. Research has yet to be conducted on the few programs at medical schools, which may have unique benefits given the specific challenges of transitioning to medical school and high rates of burnout among medical students. Purpose: This mixed methods study examines the impact of one medical school's outdoor orientation program on its participants. Methodology/Approach: A survey was administered immediately following the 2018 trip ( N = 56 responses). Follow-up focus groups were conducted with a sample of the same participants ( N = 18) in 2019. Responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Findings/Conclusions: Participants felt that the program helped ease their transition into medical school, establish a support system, and hone personal development and wellness skills. Many of these effects persisted up to one year later. Implications: These findings are of particular interest to the medical and experiential education communities because many outcomes persisted for at least one year after the original trip and aligned with factors believed to protect against medical student burnout. There is opportunity for additional research as well as expansion of similar programs to other medical schools.

Objective This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the dietary supplement of Moringa oleifera leaves (MOL) on semen quality and characteristics in rabbits. Methods Eighteen (n=18) breeding bucks of New Zealand white, of similar age group, were used for the study. Three feeding regimes, (i) 100% commercial rabbit pellets (CRP)-Group I (ii) 90% CRP + 10% fresh MOL on a dry matter (DM) basis – Group II and (iii) 80% CRP + 20% fresh MOL on a DM basis – Group III, were adopted and the trial continued for 21 days. After adaptation to the diet, semen was collected from each buck and subjected to evaluation using a computer-assisted semen analyser. Results In Group III, the sperm count, normal sperm morphology, and sperm motility increased (52.0%) in comparison with the control (Group I; 50.1%). The inclusion of 20% Moringa oliefera in the diet (Group III) caused a significant increase (P<0.05) in semen concentration (Control =136.2 M/mL; Group III=297.2 M/mL). There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in sperm motility and semen volume among the groups. Conclusion The results suggest that supplementing commercial rabbit pellets with 20% fresh Moringa oliefera leaves on a DM basis can improve the quality and characteristics of semen in breeding bucks.

<p>"Applications that gather dust... Technologies no one understands... Information that's ignored... [thus, there is still very much a need to] pay attention to Information behaviour" (Davenport, 1997, p.2). Human Information Behaviour is as important a concept today as it has ever been, as there are still millions of dollars going into improving information technology. While information seeking behaviour has been rigorously studied over the years, information use has not received the same attention. Neither has the IT artefact or choice of such technologies at the hands of users of information. This research paper aims to produce a taxonomy of the information use behaviours and ICT and non-ICT resource use of IT academics through a qualitative study involving both observation (incorporating thinking aloud) and structured face-to-face interview techniques. The research question asks "How do IT Academics manage the integration between various Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and non-ICT sources to support their information behaviours (IB) and, therefore, achieve their desired outcome? We observed and interviewed six IT academics carrying out their normal working activities, looking into actual information events as they occurred, information outcomes, information behaviours, and the technologies used by academics in their daily interactions with information. We developed a systems model, informed by activity theory, to frame the discussion. What was uncovered by the study was a tendency for academics to converge on a single technology - that of the laptop. This together with email was what academics tended to prefer to use, both at the office and in their homes; a surprising find as it was assumed that there would be a plethora of different ICTs in use. We found that technologies contributed to a blurring of the work/life equilibrium for many academics. Academics did exhibit a wide range of behaviours in their laptop and email use. Many of them were relatively unproductive, and involved moving information from one place, or one form to another, and finally ending in deletion rather than active use. Many of our interviewees reflected a need to use their time wisely through time management, and the impact of email on time management. These results also yielded the justification of Activity Theory which was used in the study, and of the systems framework which was constructed for the study. The study also confirmed the importance of environmental influences on academic's working lives, which tended to create a somewhat cyclic nature to their information events. Overall, it was not clear that patterns of use of ICTs contributed to effective information use behaviour by IT academics.</p>

Background and Purpose: Although it has been reported that the amount of alcohol consumption has a J-shaped association with ischemic stroke, it is unclear whether differences in drinking patterns affect this relationship. We aimed to clarify the impact of drinking patterns on ischemic stroke in midlife. Methods: We used data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, which is a large-sized, standardized population cohort in Korea. Five different drinking patterns were defined by combining the frequency of alcohol consumption and quantity of alcohol consumed per occasion, that is, abstainers, not drinking alcohol; drinker group I, ≤30 g/d and <5 d/wk; drinker group II, ≤30 g/d and ≥5 d/wk; drinker group III, >30 g/d and <5 d/wk; and drinker group IV, >30 g/d and ≥5 d/wk. The association between the drinking patterns and ischemic stroke occurrence was analyzed using the Cox proportional hazard model. Results: A total of 152 469 middle-aged participants (mean age, 50.2 years; 72 285 men [47.4%]) were eligible for the analyses. The median follow-up time was 9.0 years. Compared with abstainers, those who drank <5 d/wk (drinker groups I and III) had a significantly lower risk of ischemic stroke (group I hazard ratio, 0.71 [95% CI, 0.59–0.85]; group III hazard ratio, 0.80 [95% CI, 0.68–0.93]) during the first 7 years from the baseline, while other drinker groups showed no such differences. However, the effect of drinking patterns on ischemic stroke risk was attenuated after the first 7 years. Conclusions: Reduced risk of ischemic stroke was observed in middle-aged participants with specific drinking patterns, but it was limited to the earlier period. Physicians should be cautious in educating patients on alcohol consumption, considering the long-term association between drinking patterns and ischemic stroke.

Introduction: Undergraduate medical education requires the studying of a wide range of medical specialties to produce the future workforce of the healthcare system. Family medicine (FM), a relatively new specialty in Nigeria, aims at supplying doctors capable of providing comprehensive healthcare for the majority of the population. However, many Nigerian medical schools (Bayero University inclusive) are yet to include FM in their undergraduate curriculum. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study of 178 respondents randomly and proportionately selected from 400-, 500- and 600-level medical students of Bayero University Kano. Using a structured questionnaire, their awareness of FM discipline, specialty preferences, factors influencing specialty preferences and their views on the relevance of FM in improving health systems were assessed. Results: A majority of the respondents (60.7%) were males and most (93.8%) had heard of FM. However, only 19.7% of respondents were aware that FM was taught in the undergraduate programme of medical schools; 86% were aware of a postgraduate FM programme. FM (22.5%) was the second most preferred specialty following surgery (23.6%). Personal interest in the specialty was the main (76.5%) reason for preference. Only 2.9% believed the postgraduate training for FM had a longer duration. All respondents believed FM was relevant as a specialty. Conclusion: The knowledge and perception of the FM discipline among clinical medical students of Bayero University was good. They expressed that FM was relevant in the healthcare system as shown in their preference for the specialty, which ranked second among other specialties. The objective of the research was to study the features of quality of life dynamics depending on clinical and psychopathological symptoms in patients with paranoid schizophrenia asso ciated with metabolic syndrome on the background of long-term neuroleptic therapy and to study the eff ectiveness of concomitant corrective therapy. 140 patients with paranoid schizophrenia (F20.0) were examined and divided into three groups. Group I included 40 patients who received haloperidol at an ave rage daily dose of 4.6 ± 1.3 mg/day, Group II consisted of 40 patients who received risperidone (3.7 ± 1.8 mg/day), Group III included 40 patients who received quetiapine (413 ± 116 mg/day). Half of the patients in each of the presented groups continued to receive neuroleptic therapy according to the above mentioned regimen, and the other half of the patients received metformin hydro chloride at a dose of 500 mg/day in addition to the standard therapy. The cont rol group consisted of 20 patients diag nosed with "paranoid schizophrenia, remission", without metabolic syndrome signs, who had not received neuroleptics for the past six months. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Status Questionnaire (SF-36) were used to study the patients’ mental health in detail. In this research, we monitored the impact of comorbidity on quality of life indices in the patients with long-lasting treatment of schizophrenia by neuroleptic agents, and noted that concomitant corrective therapy was appropriate in terms of compliance increase and quality of life indices improvement in the studied category of patients. <p class="abstract">The aim was to study the impact of temporal bone dissection demonstrations on understanding anatomy of the ear among medical students. During a period of six months from October 2017 to March 2018, 10 cadaveric temporal bones dissections were demonstrated using ZEISS microscope and in the presence of medical students headed by a Consultant Otolaryngologist in the department of ENT, Sri Devaraj URS Medical College and Research Centre, Kolar. Anatomy of the middle ear and inner ear and various operative procedures were demonstrated. The students were divided into 2 groups. Group I comprised students who attended the temporal bone dissection and Group II included those who didn’t attend dissection. After the session both the groups were assessed by the consultant. Scores were given to the group individuals based on the ability to answer the questions. 10 Temporal bone dissections were demonstrated in 6 months period to medical students who were divided into 2 groups based on their attendance of the demonstration. The students of both groups were assessed. Scores were given by Likert scale-5point scale question. The results of our study proved that those students who attended the temporal bone dissection (Group-I) had better understanding of the anatomy and operative procedures of the ear as compared to students in group II. Demonstration of temporal bone dissection to the medical students had a good impact on their understanding of the three dimensional anatomy of the ear.</p>

<span>This study investigated the college students’ level of academic performance and determined the impact of academic stress on their English academic performance. This employed a descriptive-exploratory research design with Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and correlation analysis (Pearson r) as main analyses using statistical software. The result suggested that the students (N=250) have a moderate level of stress. Likewise, seven factors were generated through EFA but were reduced to four factors using parallel analysis, the factors are perceived personal stress, classroom stress, performance stress, and time management stress. In the correlation analysis, it was found out that perceived personal stress, classroom stress, and performance stress are significantly correlated except for time management stress. Moreover, these factors were found to have no significant relationship with the English grades of the students. With this result, it is concluded that despite having a moderate level of academic stress, students were able to manage them by using a plethora of coping mechanisms available. The institutions should offer prevention and intervention services that directly address the academic stress of the students to ensure academic success.</span>

Recent studies have shown that the prevalence of dental diseases is remaining high among the population. It is known that the pathogenesis of dental diseases is strongly associated with smoking. Maintaining proper oral hygiene is an important factor in the prevention of dental diseases. Therefore, the question of studying the impact of smoking on the oral hygiene status in adolescents and young adults is quite relevant as it can promote further development of more effective preventive measures. The aim of the study is to examine the effect of smoking on the oral hygiene parameters in adolescents and young adults. Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (Green-Vermillion, 1964) was applied to assess the oral hygiene status in 114 adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24 years, who were divided into groups: group I included 26 people who smoked traditional cigarettes on regular basis; group II included 22 people who smoked electronic cigarettes (Vapes); group III involved 23 people who used to smoke tobacco heating devices (IQOS); group IV included 43 non-smokers. The subjects of group I were found to have an unsatisfactory oral hygiene status, their OHI-S index was equal to 1.77 ± 0.02 scores. The subjects of group II demonstrated 1, 53±0, 01 scores, and the subjects of group III – 1.46±0.02 scores that corresponds to a satisfactory level of hygiene. The subjects of group IV, whose oral hygiene status was also satisfactory, had 0.87±0.03 scores. The study has shown that the state of oral hygiene is affected by smoking of traditional cigarettes or alternative smoking devices and smoking duration. Therefore, much attention should be paid and more efforts should be applied to promote smoking cessation and to elaborate the algorithm of medical and preventive dental care for those who is still smoking.
