As digital media permeate all aspects of our lives, achieving distance learning today, and in the future, can be considered inevitable, for the effectiveness of which it is necessary to provide appropriate preconditions. After the sudden outbreak of the pandemic in late 2019 and early 2020 caused by the appearance of the COVID19 virus, faculties around the world were forced to reorganize and move to online classes as soon as possible, in order to enable students to continue the academic year. The aim of this paper is to point out the basic assumptions of successful online teaching in higher education, which is assumed to continue to exist in some form after the end of the pandemic. The given assumptions will be presented in the form of pointing out the specifics of online teaching, which are significantly related to the success of students in it. It is possible to single out three groups of such specifics: individual specifics of the students themselves, characteristics of online teaching and characteristics of the higher education institution, which are described in more detail in the paper. Such teaching primarily implies adequate preparation of teachers and students in terms of developing appropriate individual competencies. In addition, an important factor of successful online teaching implies the existence of appropriate institutional support at the level of a specific higher education institution in its implementation. The given recommendations can be a good starting point for the implementation and improvement of the quality of online teaching in higher education in our country.

At the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, higher education institutions around the world were compelled to bring forth suitable alternatives to secure continuity in the process of education. To gather data that would indicate the quality and efficiency of online teaching in higher education in south and south-eastern Serbia initiated at the outbreak of the pandemic and the state of emergency declared in March 2020, we conducted a research study to provide the necessary information from students attending undergraduate academic studies. The research was conducted in two phases. The first phase consisted of quantitative research conducted on a sample of 211 students. The data collected were processed by resorting to factor analysis to determine specific factors as a starting point for designing questions for the second research phase. The second phase was implemented by conducting semi-structured interviews on a sample of 61 students. The main intention was to determine key characteristics of the teaching process realised in the context of an emergency transition to the form of teaching which had not been prepared or resorted to beforehand. We identified certain specifics in this regard, as a starting point for improving existing practice. Implications for practice or policy: It is necessary to secure a suitable level of institutional support, to maintain the quality of higher education in unforeseen social circumstances. It is necessary to adequately prepare for and support teachers and students in online teaching at both institutional and national level. To avoid adverse effects on individual students in the circumstances of online teaching, it is necessary to meet students´ educational, social and emotional needs.

This paper considers student engagement in the context of a diverse higher education population and explores what institutions can do to impact positively on student engagement. The paper takes as its starting point the goals of higher education and the purposes of student engagement and reflects on the politicisation of student engagement, and the relative positioning of the student and the higher education institution in relation to student engagement. The paper suggests conditions for and dimensions of student engagement, and identifies how opportunities for student engagement may be embedded through the curriculum and through learning and teaching. An innovative and original pragmatic framework exploring academic, emotional and transactional dimensions of student engagement that can be used by higher education institutions to implement holistic, targeted engagement strategies is presented.

The whole world population witnesses changes that are happening due to COVID-19 pandemic. One of the greatest changes is shown in the manner of conducting the educational process that has been transferred from traditional onsite to online. This paper analyses what are advantages and what are disadvantages of online teaching in higher education in Croatia, but it is applicable to all levels of education system. As approximately one year has passed since first lockdown and consequently closing all educational institutions, some experience is gained. This paper will try to systematize most of the findings that practice of online education has shown. In a few words, some advantages of quality online teaching are: low expenses, timesaving, learning at one’s own pace, motivation, communication, attention etc. Disadvantages of online teaching are: lack of social face-to-face contact, extreme exposure to screens, all sorts of distractions due to inappropriate work environment, inadequate technical equipment, lack of digital skills etc. Although the key role is on the teachers as creators of the educational process, students, as participants of the process, should also make an effort to adjust and embrace new ways of teaching and learning. Both teachers and students should express their opinions and all sorts of needs, to take the best out of online education during a pandemic.

Regardless of whether educational institutions had experience of using online teaching, the COVID-19 pandemic forced a sudden switch to fully virtual delivery mode, which presented challenges at both institutional and instructional levels. At the time, not much information about these experiences was available to guide education during lockdown. This study, therefore, explored the virtual learning experiences of a Maldivian higher education institution that had practiced virtual learning before and during the pandemic. Data was collected from 52 participants – a senior management member, four lecturers, and 47 students - through conducting semistructured interviews, studying students’ reflection journals, doing lesson observations, and reviewing documents. Thematic analysis of the data revealed several changes had occurred in the teaching process of the college. Significant modification of the instructional setup, structural arrangements, and the psychological readiness of students had both positive and negative impacts. This study endeavors to be of value to other higher education institutions who adopt virtual learning.
