<p>This article presents an action research on Lesotho educators’ enactment strategies of the French integrated curriculum content. Essentially, the aim of this article was to explore the concept of content in order to establish whether enactment strategies used by educators on content favour successful attainment of goals. Convenience sampling was used in selecting seven participants. Four methods of data generation, namely, one-on-one semi-structured interviews, document analysis, observations, and reflective activities, were used. Action research was effected in two phases: Phase One findings demonstrated educators’ dominant use of savoir (factual enactment strategies) at the expense of savoir-faire (social enactment strategies) and savoir-être (habitual enactment strategies). This seemed to present a hurdle, as content was not aligned with goals. Phase Two results, through the intervention of action research, saw educators maintaining a balance among savoir, savoir-faire and savoir-être, thereby aligning content with goals prescribed in the curriculum and therefore augmenting greatly the chances of attaining these goals. The article consequently recommends a revision of the policy, in which the use of the three propositions of content would be advocated to encourage teaching of schooled knowledge, context-dependent knowledge, as well as knowledge that is deemed essential by the educator as required by the prevailing context.</p><p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0620/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>

People living with HIV (PLWH) face social stigma which makes disclosure of HIV status difficult. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to understand the lived experiences of stigmatization in the process of disease disclosure among PLWH in Taiwan. Analysis of the semi-structured interviews from 19 PLWH in Taiwan revealed two phases and six themes. Phase one “experiences before disclosure” involved three themes: “Struggles under the pressure of concealing the HIV Status,” “Torn between fear of unemployment/isolation and desire to protect closed ones,” and “Being forced to disclose the HIV status.” Phase two “experiences after disclosure” included three themes: “Receiving special considerations and requirements from school or work,” “Receiving differential treatments in life and when seeking medical care,” and “Stress relief and restart.” Healthcare professionals need to assess stigmatization in PLWH and develop individualized approaches to assist with the disease disclosure process.

This paper reports on a 2016-2019 study of 123 students in the most academic Year 9 class in a large, high-achieving New Zealand state boys’ secondary school. The study asked the question: “What aspects of society, schools and teachers, home environment and your own intrapersonal qualities helped or hindered your achievement in at least one academic subject?” Data were gathered through the completion of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, either in focus groups, or individually. Arguably, the most important findings related to participant perceptions of the greatest influence supporting achievement and the single most common factor identified as hindering achievement. The greatest help was identified to be students’ own intrapersonal characteristics, and the greatest hindrance was identified to be schools and teachers. This paper reports on the main findings of the research with particular emphasis on those with relevance to educators. It also considers what the major implications are for educational practice in New Zealand schools.

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the burnout levels of music teachers and their personalities. The research consisted of 278 music teachers who were selected from various places throughout Turkey via subjective, convenience sampling method. For data collection, the ‘Personal Information Form’, ‘Adjective Based Personality Test’ and ‘Maslach Burnout Scale’ were used. The research involved both quantitative and qualitative dimensions. The data were analyzed by quantitative t-test, multiple regression analysis and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Data for the qualitative dimension of the research were obtained from semi-structured interviews conducted with 5 music teachers. Negative, significant relationships were determined between extroversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness and general burnout, while a positive, significant relationship was determined between neuroticism and general burnout. The burnout variable was found to have a statistically significant effect on the openness, neuroticism and conscientiousness dimensions of the personality types. The effects of conscientiousness and openness dimensions were not, however, found to be significant. The music teachers who had characteristics of extroversion and conscientiousness were found to have higher levels of burnout if they have the characteristics of neuroticism that reduce their exhaustion. The findings of the research show that the effect of personality types on burnout is important.

Efforts to stem the tide of the Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) pandemic in Africa emphasise the necessity that learners should be able to make informed decisions. Although learners in Zimbabwe’s schools are taught about HIV and AIDS, the extent of their knowledge needed to be determined. The major objective was to assess the knowledge of secondary school learners in Harare, Zimbabwe, about HIV and AIDS. Structured interviews were conducted with 75 Grade 8 (Form 1) secondary school learners from four schools in Harare.Most learners had obtained their HIV and AIDS knowledge from schools, but some did so from their parents, community activities, the radio or television. No learner had commenced with sexual activities and all had heard about HIV, but not all knew what HIV was, and even fewer could define AIDS. Less than one-third of the learners could mention the three most important HIV preventive measures. Most learners were willing to undergo voluntary counselling and testing (VCT), but few had done so. As no learner had commenced sexual activities, opportunities existed to empower Grade 8 (Form 1) learners with adequate HIV and AIDS knowledge. Generally the learners’ HIV and AIDS knowledge levels were high but some misconceptions existed. Schools should engage with radio and television programmes to address misconceptions about HIV and AIDS. Learners should be enabled to access VCT services. Gestruktureerde onderhoude is gevoer met 75 Graad 8 (Vorm 1) sekondêre skool leerders van vier skole in Harare.Die meeste leerders het hulle MIV and VIGS kennis by skole opgedoen terwyl ‘n paar dit van hulle ouers, gemeenskapsaktiwiteite, die radio en televisie gekry het. Geen leerders het met seksuele aktiwiteite begin nie, almal het van MIV gehoor, maar nie almal het geweet wat MIV is nie, en nog minder kon VIGS definieer. Minder as een-derde kon die drie belangrikste MIV voorkomende maatreëls noem. Die meeste leerders was gewillig om vrywillige berading en toetsing (VBT) te ondergaan, maar min het dit reeds gedoen.Aangesien geen leerder seksueel aktief was nie, bestaan geleenthede om Graad 8 (Vorm 1)leerders te bemagtig om ingeligte besluite te neem. Oor die algemeen was die leerders se MIV en VIGS kennisvlakke hoog, maar wanopvattings het bestaan Skole behoort saam te werk met radio en televisie programme ten einde wanopvattings aan te spreek. Leerders moet in staat gestel word om VBT dienste te benut. Doeltreffender MIV en VIGS voorligting in Zimbabwe se skole, kan meer jong mense in staat stel of HIV negatief te bly.

<p>This paper describes a study that is currently being carried out in an Upper Secondary School in the Province of Salerno (Campania, Italy). Using the Student Voice approach, the research group of the University of Salerno started the study with the aim of spreading the culture of participation and the active involvement of students in school life, while also strengthening their role as active decision-makers in the teaching/learning processes. This research is divided into two stages: an exploratory phase, that is currently being carried out and interests only one fourth year class of a Second Level College of Science: we define this phase our pilot study. Subsequently, based on critical situation and results of the first phase, the aim is to include a larger number of students. The pilot study involves 22 students of a fourth year class and deals with the problems of inattention and lack of interest that, in general, students demonstrate towards school activities. The main purposes of this first phase are: to gather information and to analyse the reasons for this recurring behavior; to implement, with the Student Voice approach, resolved strategies, as well as, verify their effectiveness; and based on this study’s results, we want to involve a larger number of students, if possible, during the next school year (2016/2017). The aim is to establish a different relationship with students, promoting dialogue and debate with teachers, to bring out their points of view, their wishes, the expectations they have towards the school, in order to integrate their concerns in the decisions which affect them. The approach used in this study is <em>qualitative-hermeneutic</em>; an Italian schoolteacher that is co-author of this paper, with the support of the research group, carried out the Action-Research; the data are the result of the observations, group discussions and comparisons. First, a questionnaire was developed to find initial information regarding the students’ opinion about the use of technologies for didactic activities, suggestions and preferences on learning. Subsequently, a qualitative data analysis was carried out, useful to achieve new information for research continuance, specifically to construct the instrument that will be used in the second phase.</p>

The purpose of this article is to identify mechanisms that may contribute to preserving the privacy of patient information contained in the electronic medical record. The research strategy is exploratory-descriptive, using Document Analysis and Case Study. A set of 20 documents, related to laws, manuals and standards, was analyzed and conducted case studies in two hospitals, preceded by a pilot case study. The cases were studied through semi-structured interviews, analysis of internal documents and occasional observation. In one of the stages of the research we have identification and analysis of regulatory and normative documents. And as a final result, the identification of the mechanisms that the hospitals surveyed use for information privacy. The most used mechanisms are those of processes in relation to the safeguard and those of relationship in relation to the awareness of the collaborators. As contribution, the article shows the need to strengthen the discussion of the theme for the academy. As well, a list of documents and mainly a list of mechanisms that can contribute to the protection of the information in the health area.

Even after undertaking years of formal education to acquire the language in schools, having a poor command of English remains a problem faced by most Malaysians, especially students in rural schools of Sarawak. Based on the error-analysis carried out by recent research, subject–verb agreement (SVA) is one of the most frequent errors committed by students. To overcome this problem, teachers should significantly improve students’ mastery of SVA in the English language through effective teaching methods. Therefore, this research was conducted to explore the effects of Kagan Cooperative Learning Structures in teaching SVA among rural Sarawak learners. In this study, 35 Form 4 students were selected from a secondary school in the Belaga District, Sarawak as the research participants. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were used as data collection tools. Overall, findings demonstrated that students showed positive feedback after the intervention was implemented. Results of this research will hopefully provide insights to secondary school students, teachers and the community in the cooperative teaching and learning of grammar.

The article presents an action research process for the improvement of Vocational Guidance and Career Education in a school center in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands). The research perspective, from a collaborative and critical work, responds to the need to improve the teaching-learning practice. Priority is given to the ulterior need to improve learning for all students and increase the impact of their journey through school by means of an educational attention and guidance based on a curriculum project with an integrated and global Career Education and Guidance. Finally, results, process and conclusions are displayed of the two years of critical action research carried out by the different educational agents participating.

This study investigates the EFL classrooms to identify the role of interaction in reading comprehension classes. Student-student interaction through the form of pair-work was introduced while the pre-test and post-test measured its effect. Adequate classes were observed to identify the level of the control group students. This study tried to find out the role of interaction in facilitating students’ reading comprehension. It had found that when the students got the opportunity to interact through pair-work, they became their source of input. And it was evident that after the introduction of interaction, their comprehension ability enhanced as they correctly answered more questions in the post-test than in the pre-test. Based on the results, the study also recommends the introduction of interaction to enhance students’ skill in listening, speaking, and writing.

Writing a diary with colorful propeller mind mapping method is an innovative method to enhance the 7th grade hearing impaired students’ capabilities and skills of writing in Karya Mulia Special Secondary School for Students with Disabilities (SMPLB) Surabaya. This innovative effort was based on the constraints or obstacles to teach hearing impaired students in developing the abilities and skills of writing a diary that were still far below the average of minimum completion criteria (KKM). To find out the extent of this innovative method’s implementation’s impact, the author wanted to do a class action research (PTK) that includes 3 cycles where two-time meetings were conducted in each cycle. The research was started from the pre action activities continued to a cycle-1, cycle-2, to cycle-3. The result indicates that there has been improvements in 7th grade student’s learning outcome in writing a diary through mind mapping mehod using learn to write diary through colorful propeller mapping method AsbtrakMenulis buku harian melalui metode pemetaan pikiran (mind mapping) dengan menggunakan baling-baling berwarna merupakan metode inovatif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan dan keterampilan menulis buku harian siswa tuna rungu kelas VII SMPLB Karya Mulia Surabaya. Upaya inovatif ini beranjak dari kendala/hambatan sebelumnya dalam membelajarkan siswa tuna rungu mengembangkan kemampuan dan keterampilan menulis Buku Harian yang hasilnya berada jauh di bawah rata-rata Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum (KKM). Untuk mengetahui sejauh mana dampak dari penerapan metode inovatif ini, penulis melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK) yang mencakup 3 siklus dan setiap siklus terdiri dari dua kali pertemuan. Penelitian dimulai dari kegiatan pra tindakan, dilanjutkan dengan siklus-1, siklus-2, sampai dengan siklus-3. Hasil penelitian tindakan kelas menunjukkan adanya peningkatan hasil belajar siswa kelas VII SMPLB Karya Mulia Surabaya dalam menulis buku harian melalui metode pemetaan pikiran dengan baling-baling berwarna
