This article proposes a systematic analysis of the main articles relevant to the topic of quality of life published in the Journal Quality of Life, in the period 1990−2020. The aim is to provide a better understanding of the development of this field of research after 1990, in the context of the post-socialist transition, and subsequent integration in the European Union and alignment with European standards. The Quality of Life Journal was one of the most important ways to disseminate the results of the research conducted in Romania; therefore, it can provide a general overview of the social issues addressed in the context of social and economic changes that Romania has gone through in the last 30 years. The conclusions suggest that the period 1990−2000 is one in which the quality of life research is institutionalized, and consolidated after 2000. Since Romania was included in the quality of life European surveys, it was constantly at the end of the EU rankings on most of the quality of life indicators. Keywords: Quality of life research; quality of life indicators; Romania; Research Institute for Quality of Life; Quality of life Journal.

The main objective of this paper is to describe the logic of the conceptual approaches regarding the quality of life, and to identify the main dimensions and measurable indicators of quality of life. The identification of the main conceptualizations of quality of life is an essential step, in the context in which quality of life is often ambiguous or has multiple meanings. Although often used as an umbrella term which encompasses many aspects of human life, we aim to describe the logic of the integrative approaches regarding well-being/ quality of life. The identification of the main dimensions and measurable indicators of quality of life with a brief description of those, will serve to operationalize a list of life quality dimensions. Keywords: quality of life research; quality of life measurement; quality of life theory; social indicators; economic indicators.

The structure and distribution of quality of life forms a key area of research in human geography, with particular attention given to conditions at the disadvantaged end of the quality-of-life spectrum. To date, most work has focused on the national, regional, or interurban scale. However, whereas descriptive pattern identification and mapping is of value at the macroscale as a pointer to detailed work, policy-relevant quality-of-life indicators are more likely to be derived at the local scale and to be related to specific life concerns. In the present research, a multiscale multiindicator methodology is used to examine the structure and distribution of life quality in Glasgow. In a series of analyses in which objective and subjective indicators are employed at different geographic scales, the city-wide pattern of life quality is identified and a number of severely disadvantaged subareas isolated. Within one such subarea the quality-of-life experience of a particular social group, the elderly, is examined in detail. Application of the methodology in other cities could facilitate intercity and cross-cultural comparisons of quality-of-life variations within contemporary urban areas. Such investigations can also be of practical utility for decisionmakers seeking to define priorities for social policy.

The article addresses comparative qualitative content analysis as a part of the grounded theory research to explore the relationship between English language proficiency of economically active adults and their quality of life. Using comparative qualitative content analysis of the policy documents in respect of lifelong learning as main data collection method, the authors of the article aim to identify the relationship between the 21st century skills and indicators of life quality by comparing the sources that define the 21st century skills and analysing them in the context of the “8+1” dimensions of life quality offered by the European Union. The following research questions have been proposed: how 21st century skills are defined in the policy documents and how they relate to the quality of human life. The analysis of European Parliament, Council of the European Union, Word Economic Forum and Eurostat policies, models, strategies and their implementation in respect of lifelong learning reveals existing gaps and points at the urgent need in profiling the development of human skills to enhance human well-being and life quality in Europe. Besides, developing new skills and improving existing ones can be a tool for improving the quality of life in the future, whereas the dimensions of life quality can serve as a prerequisite for skills development.

The article presents the reference framework for multidisciplinary research at the Life Quality Research Centre (LQRC). The research paradigm about the citizens’ quality of life in society imposes a multifaceted and complex analysis. At the LQRC we address this as thematically divided into six scientific areas: education and training; physical activity and healthy lifestyles; food production and technology on food behaviors; organizational dynamics; motor behavior; and individual and community health. These areas are clearly related to the concept of quality of life. They fit the goals and dynamics of the research center. In each section, the authors develop the themes of research projects and the challenges that characterize research in the area of quality of life. It is clear that there is an agreement and understanding that ensures that quality of life research is on the agenda of the world organizations related to scientific research and human development. This is a real challenge for scientific research centers, since multidisciplinary paradigms are the foundation of our collective organization, and the evolution of research on quality of life could fulfil current needs and lead to the improvement of citizen lives.

Aim. The research is targeted for estimating quality of life in adolescents with different types of tuberculosis. Methods. Quality of life in 30 adolescents aged 13-17 years was evaluated using Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory - PedsQL questionnaire. Parents were evaluated separately. An initial level of a quality of life before the treatment initiation and quality of life right after in-patient treatment completion (56 days) were compared. Results. Adolescents had pessimistic and emotionally limited subjective estimations of their clinical condition and its influences on all types of activities. The change in Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory scores (49.4±2.1 before treatment, compared to 51.9±2.0 after treatment) confirmed that recreation and treatment of tuberculosis significantly raised the subjective scores for all aspects of patient’s quality of life. Quality of life indicators by different functional scales were higher if assessed by parents compared to patients themselves (p 0.001). Parents were sure in positive influence of the prolonged course of the specific treatment on «school life» scale parameters. Comparative assessment of quality of life trend showed that improvement after treatment was observed according to assessment both by parents and patients themselves. All quality of life indicators were higher in female patients (score of all types of activities - 55.7±2.7 points) compared to males (48.3±2.8 points). Conclusion. Revealed trends confirm the need for performing recreational, medical, social, rehabilitative actions and psychosocial correction considering the age features of adolescents, their subjective estimations and functioning in a hospital.

The Novokuznetsk agglomeration is peculiar in that the towns (settlements) within the agglomeration are all monotowns, and the main development problem of monotowns is economy modernization according to the innovative development model. In this regard, it is important to research the benefits of agglomeration for the solution of modernization problems of the constituent monotowns. The current research features the problem from the position of the economy-sociological approach. The subject of the study is the combination of living conditions and quality of life of the population in the metropolitan area as a necessary prerequisite to ensure the modernization of qualified personnel. Assessment of social welfare was provided by a questionnaire survey among the residents of the Novokuznetsk agglomeration (N=1023), who acted as experts. A systematic analysis of the survey results shows that the conditions and life quality among the population of the metropolitan area can be characterized as contradictory. On the one hand, agglomeration system provides for the most important needs of the population; a large part of the population displays a positive attitude for the future, local identity and involvement in various forms of socially useful activities. On the other hand, the quality characteristics and living conditions are mainly applied to an average value. This means that these factors do not attract qualified specialists, capable to solve innovative challenges of modernization. The results of the study can be of practical interest for local authorities and heads of the enterprises in monotowns. The problems of modernization cannot be solved unless the quality of life is improved, the needs of the population are provided for and the residential attractiveness of the territory is increased.

In this article, I propose a methodology for interpreting subjective indicators on the topic of quality of life, using several data sets: International Indicators Database (1970), Perceived Quality of Life in Romania (1979), Quality of Life Diagnosis in Romania (1990−2010); Eurobarometer in the EU (2015). The Absolute Data Assessment Scheme (SEDA) is used to interpret subjective data regarding the quality of life. In the first part, I present a short history of the concept of happiness and scientific research regarding quality of life scholarship. In the second part, I present the sociological perspective on the quality of life, focusing on analyzing subjective indicators of quality of life, and explaining the structure of the Absolute data assessment scheme − SEDA. Keywords: quality of life; quality of life research program in sociology; subjective wellbeing; absolute data evaluation scheme.

Selecting indicators for assessing the quality of life at the regional level is not unambigous. Currently, there are no precisely defined indicators that would give comprehensive information about the quality of life on a local level. In this paper we focus on the determination (selection) of groups of indicators that can be interpreted, on the basis of studied literature, as factors characterizing the quality of life. Furthermore, on the application of methods to reduce the dimensionality of these indicators, from the source of the database CULS KROK, which provides statistics on the regional and districts level. To reduce the number of indicators and the subsequent creation of derived variables that capture the relationships between selected indicators multivariate statistical analysis methods, especially method of principal components and factor analysis were used. This paper also indicates the methodology grant project “Methodological Approaches to assess Subjective Aspects of the life quality in regions of the Czech Republic”.
