Aim: This study presents the prevalence of dental caries and its relation to the quality of life of adolescents according to the access to dental health services. Methods: Two hundred and fifty-six adolescents between 15 and 19 years of age participated in the study; they were all enrolled in public schools in a countryside municipality of the São Paulo State. Data related to dental caries were evaluated by the DMFT Index, and OHIP-14 was used for evaluating the quality of life. Mann Whitney and Spearmann correlation tests were also used (p<0.05). Results: A DMFT of 3.09 (±3.30) was found with a higher prevalence among the adolescents who used public dental services (3.43±3.34) compared with those who used private services (2.94±3.28). A statistically significant relationship between the decay component of DMFT with physical pain (0.020), physical disability (0.002) and quality of life (0.017) was verified. Conclusions: A low prevalence of dental caries was observed, and it was higher in adolescents who used public oral health services rather than private ones, evidencing the low influence of oral health on the quality of life of the participants.

ABSTRACT Background Data on epidemiology of dental caries of adults in rural India appear to be sparse. Objective The purpose of the study was to assess the oral health status and dental treatment needs of a rural Indian population. Materials and methods The study population consisted of 189 volunteer subjects with a mean age of 34.9 ± 14.2 years and 54% males. Decayed, missing due to caries and filled teeth (DMFT) and tooth surfaces (DMFS) assessed the dental caries experience. Structured interviews collected data on perception of health including oral health, oral hygiene practices and snacking habits. Results While only 38.1% perceived themselves to be in good or very good dental health, nearly 85% felt the same about general health. The most common sugar exposure was sweetened tea; 75% consumed the beverage at least once a day. More than 80% of the subjects had untreated caries with mean DMFT and DMFS scores of 5.1 ± 3.9 and 13.8 ± 17.8, which lacked any gender differences. Dental treatment needs ranged from 16.9% two-surface fillings to 60.8% one-surface fillings; 23.8% crowns or bridges and 37.6% extractions. Those who perceived themselves to be in better oral health had significantly lower DMFT (4.0 ± 3.2 vs 5.9 ± 4.1) and DMFS (8.4 ± 11.7 vs 17.1 ± 20.0) scores (p < 0.05). A similar trend was observed between perception of general health and DMFT (4.8 ± 3.4 vs 7.0 ± 5.6) and DMFS (11.9 ± 13.7 vs 24.1 ± 30.7) scores. Conclusion Results indicate high levels of dental caries as well as dental treatment needs among the study participants. How to cite this article Maru AM, Narendran S. The Community Partnership Program (PKM) partners are SDN 96 Mannanti, Tellu Limpoe, Sinjai. The problem is: (1) The exchange rate of the rupiah against the US dollar is weakening which affects health costs (2) The high prevalence of dental caries which ranks fifth in the 10 most diseases (Data from the Mannanti Puskesmas Tellu Limpoe in 2017) (3). There is only one dentist in Mannanti village who only practices at the puskesmas. (4) Medical equipment especially dentistry tools at Mannanti puskesmas is limited. (5) Access to public transportation goes to Sinjai Hospital which is difficult and far enough (± 30 km distance and 60 minutes). (6) Public perception that dental examinations are expensive is also one of the reasons why someone is lazy to go to the dentist. The solutions offered from the PKM activities are: (a) Changing people's mindset from curative treatment shifting to promotive and preventive treatment so that the funds used are more minimum; (b) Implementation of SIKAPAMASE (SIkat gigi PAgi bersaMA di SEkolah) as an economical dental caries prevention program; (c) Application of topical fluor to students as an additional preventive measure to prevent cavities; (d) Guidance of teachers and parents as mediators of dental and oral health information to the community; (e) Healthy smile tooth ambassador competition for elementary students. The expected targets of the PKM activities are: (1) The caries status of SDN 96 Mannanti students reduced by 50% measured through the DMF-T index (def-t) measured through the results of pre-test and post-test activities; (2) Increasing students' knowledge about how to maintain dental health is measured through the results of pre-test and post-test activities; (3) Our program products are in the form of human resources, it is expected that SDN 96 students can be mediators of dental and oral health information in the family, school and home environment; (4) Caries preventive guidance booklet (5) Ambassador of healthy teeth. (6) SIKAPAMASE (SIkat gigi PAgi bersaMA di SEkolah) as an innovative program at the Mannanti health center that is carried out continuously.

Background: Dental caries is one of the dental and oral health problems found the most in children. A previous study in Surabaya has revealed a high prevalence of dental caries in pre-school children (67.5%) resulting in a high severity level (def: 7.0). It occurred because of the poor mother’s knowledge of dental and oral health. It could be due to poor efforts to access information about oral and dental health which significantly affects child dental care. Studies show mothers in Surabaya mostly used Youtube as one of the media for accessing the information on the internet (46.2%). In Surabaya, the percentage of mothers having smartphones for accessing the internet was high (91.6%). Purpose: This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of the Youtube channel in improving parents’ knowledge about dental and oral health. Methods: This study was observational descriptive research using a cross-sectional study design. Thirty samples were selected through the total sampling of the population of parents in one of the elementary schools in Surabaya, Indonesia. This study employed pre-test and post-test methods to measure an increase in knowledge level. The participants’ knowledge was assessed before and after they were briefed and asked to watch Youtube videos regularly for 4 weeks. Data collected were then analyzed by the paired T-Test comparison test in SPSS. Results: In the pre-test, the participants’ knowledge about dental and oral health was at a 65% level. While the post-test showed an increase in their knowledge into 93%. There was a significant difference between the two results (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Educative video channels on dental and oral health can effectively improve parents’ knowledge about dental and oral health.

Health Research in 2013 showed that 24.8% of children with health problems and dental caries index reached 1.4. A’yun’s Predictor Software (APS) was a new tool to describe the interaction of various factors that play a role in the caries process. The program was developed to establish a better understanding of the multi-factorial aspects of dental caries in children,as well as a guide to improve behavior to reduce the risk of new caries. This study in children aged 10-12 years in SDN Baturan I,SDN Baturan II,SDN Mayangan and SD Muhammmadiyah Trini in Sleman,Yogyakarta.Sampling technique was simple random sampling. This type of research was quasi-experimental control group(pretest and posttest design with control group). The independent variable was oral health education with APS and the dependent variable was the behavior of dental health maintenance oral and mouth, salivary pH and PHPM (Personal Hygiene Performance-Modified)index.Results data were analyzed by t-test. Research shown that there were significant differences between the treatment group and control group on the behavior of the maintenance of oral health of children and PHPM index (p <0.05), while the pH of saliva there was not to be difference (p> 0.05). The conclusions of this study was significant APS application on dental health maintenance behavior oral and mouth, salivary pH, and the index PHPM in school children.

Abstract Background Several studies have shown that social conditions in which children are raised and family psychosocial factors affect their oral health. Oral health literacy (OHL) has been shown to be associated with prevalence of dental caries, access to care and prevention of oral diseases. No studies have addressed this issue in Senegal. Objective: To study the characteristics of the mothers’ OHL and its association with children’s dental health. Methods Cross- sectional study in the district of Pikine, a suburb of Dakar including 16 municipalities. Two-stage cluster sampling and a sample comprising 315 children from 3 to 9 years old and their mothers. Data on oral health status were collected from clinical examinations, sociodemographic and OHL (Sistani et al’ OHL-AQ) data were collected during face-to-face interview. Results More than half of the mothers (56.5%) had a low OHL, but 68.9% had an adequate score for the communication/interactive dimension. The level of OHL increased significantly with education level, household wealth and dynamism of the social support. Prevalence of dental caries was 64.8%, following a social gradient and significantly associated with the mothers’ OHL level (OR = 5.2) CI[2.2-14.1]. The oral health behaviour of families was significantly associated with the level of OHL and children’s dental health. A structural equation model showed the OHL was a mediating factor between social characteristics and oral health behaviours. Conclusions The OHL of mothers is an important variable to be included in the study of social inequalities in oral health. The communication/interactive dimension seems to be decisive in the African context of an oral culture and dynamic social support which makes it possible to provide better knowledge and preventive behaviour. Key messages High maternal OHL should be reinforced to lessen oral health inequalities among Senegalese children. The communication/interactive dimension seems to be decisive in the African context of an oral culture and dynamic social to enhance OHL.
