Background: Although the consequences of disability are magnified in humanitarian contexts, research into the difficulties of caring for children with a disability in such settings has received limited attention. Methods: Based on in-depth interviews with 31 families, key informants and focus group discussions in Turkana, Kenya, this article explores the lives of families caring for children with a range of impairments (hearing, vision, physical and intellectual) in a complex humanitarian context characterised by drought, flooding, armed conflict, poverty and historical marginalisation. Results: The challenging environmental and social conditions of Turkana magnified not only the impact of impairment on children, but also the burden of caregiving. The remoteness of Turkana, along with the paucity and fragmentation of health, rehabilitation and social services, posed major challenges and created opportunity costs for families. Disability-related stigma isolated mothers of children with disabilities, especially, increasing their burden of care and further limiting their access to services and humanitarian programmes. In a context where social systems are already stressed, the combination of these factors compounded the vulnerabilities faced by children with disabilities and their families. Conclusion: The needs of children with disabilities and their carers in Turkana are not being met by either community social support systems or humanitarian aid programmes. There is an urgent need to mainstream disability into Turkana services and programmes.

The rate of early marriage is 87% in northwest Nigeria, although it is 56% in Kaduna. One major issue is that early marriage is often rationalized as a religious norm. This study explores the role of faith leaders in advancing the cause of adolescent girls regarding the timing of marriage in Kaduna state. This qualitative study took place in three local government areas: Chikun (Mixed Christians and Muslims), Makarfi (majority Muslims), and Zangon-Kataf (majority Christians) were purposively selected to have a variety of mixed religious contexts. Using purposive sampling methods, the researcher conducted 24 focus group discussions with adolescent girls, 24 in-depth interviews with faith leaders, and 12 key informant interviews with other stakeholders. The study used a framework method for analyzing qualitative data. The study found that faith leaders play essential roles in rationalizing or discouraging early marriage through preaching and other activities. The study identifies three categories of faith leaders concerning early marriage. Some are proactive, discoursing about it. The second category is the passive faith leaders, somehow indifferent but has never preached against or in favor of early marriage. The last set consists of faith leaders promoting early marriage—who think early marriage is still beneficial. The study recommends that considering the social position of faith leaders and critical role in sanctioning marital unions, they could be considered as a vital link in efforts to curtail early marriage.

Analysis and generalization of previous studies showed that there is no comprehensive solution to the problem of increasing the operational reliability of building frames, reconstruction and modernization of buildings and structures, taking into account a sustainable approach. After the completion of construction, the frame of the building is constantly and steadily changing and wearing out, as a result, requiring an increase in operational reliability, and these processes are associated with the correct decision-making on changing the bearing capacity of structures and on the technology and organization of the corresponding work. To solve this problem, it is necessary to create a general methodology for a system for modeling constructive and technological solutions. The system's methodology is intended to reduce costs while increasing the reliability of frame structures, taking into account social culture, optimal impact on society, efficient use of resources and environmental principles. Particularly acute is the problem of introducing innovative and effective organizational and constructive-technological solutions to ensure the required performance and functionality with a minimum negative impact on the environment, while taking into account the improvement of economic, social, cultural aspects at the local, regional and global levels. In addition, the necessary criteria are an increase of the bearing capacity, a decrease in deformability and the recovery of the operational suitability of building structures. The article investigates a comprehensive solution to the problem of increasing the operational reliability of building frames during the reconstruction and modernization of buildings and structures. Identified internal and external factors of changes, as well as the main criteria for increasing the operational reliability of building frames. Consideration of these factors as a range of functions makes it possible to predict the long-term needs and behavior of the building frame throughout the entire life cycle, taking into account the degradation of building components and the need to restore or strengthen the elements of the building frames. After collecting and analyzing information on the identified factors, a system of technological solutions is proposed that takes into account a sustainable approach to reconstruction and categories such as organizational and technological solutions, structures, materials, economics, management, ecology, social culture, in particular the impact on society and the environment.
