Peas, as a valuable nutritious and cultivated plant (Myers et al., 2010), have recently received special attention for the improvement of new varieties (Kreplak et al., 2019). They are increasingly adapted to any kind of environmental conditions. Thus, we want an increased production of grains, contents in active principles as high as possible (Pownall et al., 2010), but also to increase its proportion in the structure of crops on a farm. The Alvesta variety, studied for its specific morphological characters, is one of the newest creations. Even in the slightly drier conditions of the last period (two years), this variety formed plants with heights of 42-45 cm, with a total plant weight of 7.5 g. 10 knots were formed on a pea stem (at one node the floral and fruit raceme are caught and formed). Each plant formed 4 pods, weighing 6 g and 16 berries weighing 4.5-6 g. The bean had a diameter of 7 mm and the absolute weight of the berries was 215 g. Among these morphological characters were obtained significantly positive correlations in most cases. Insignificant situations were between the absolute mass of the berries with the size of the plant, with the number of nodes, with the total number of pods and with the number of berries on a plant. Only one insignificant negative correlation was observed between the number of nodes on the stem and the diameter of the grains. Regarding the variability of the determined characters, slightly higher values were found, mainly due to the existence of the dry bottom. And yet the Alvesta variety, with improved morphological characters proved to be a good adaptability to zonal cultivation conditions.

New studies on the morphological characteristics of sunflower plants could provide new systems and directions in the complex progress of the future improvement of hybrids. Through the complex (Encheva & Shindrova, 2014) and wide genetic dowry together with the concrete cultivation conditions of the sunflower, the characteristic expression of the plant morphology takes place. In the recent improved Hysun 162 IT hybrid, some new characters were found, specific to the semi-early maturity group. Thus, the diameter of the sunflower head/capitulum had an average of 17 cm. The weight of the sunflower head was 105 g together with the achenes produced and only 39 g empty head, without achenes. The average of number of achenes/ head was 1470, and their weight was 65 g. The percentage of empty achenes was 2-3%, and the mass of one thousand seeds was on average 44 g. The seeds had a length of 10 mm and width of 5 mm. Positive correlations were generally obtained between the morphological characters of the sunflower head. Though this study carried out on the components of the heads of this new sunflower hybrid, a good adaptability to the current zonal agriculture was found.

In this paper we studied the variability and correlation of cabbage traits in different maturity groups. The study included early spring cabbages (planted in early spring, harvested in early summer) and autumn cabbages (planted in mid-summer, harvested in late autumn). Using coefficients of variation and correlation coefficients, we analyzed 17 cabbage traits in 35 commercially grown cultivars, F1 hybrids, and experimental F1 hybrids. The traits were analyzed separately for each maturity group. In the early cabbages, the coefficients of variation ranged from 4.8 to 44.2%. The calculated correlation coefficients differed between the two maturity groups. The early cabbages had 26 significant positive correlations. The positive correlations calculated among different traits of early cabbages defined this group fully and made it distinct from the late-maturing genotypes. Plant height and rosette diameter in the early genotypes were highly positively correlated with rosette weight, whole plant weight, head weight, usable portion of head, head height, and head diameter. Plant height and rosette diameter participate in the formation of active photosynthetic area in early cabbages. Rosette width in these genotypes provides a greater influx of light and heat, which results in greater head weight. Also, in early cabbages that have greater plant height, the leaf rosette will not lie on the cold surface of the ground in the spring. The activity of the cabbage plant is thus more focused towards the formation of larger head weight. Head volume in the late genotypes was highly positively correlated with rosette diameter, whole plant weight, head weight, usable portion of head, inner stem length, and head height. In late cabbages plant activity is directed towards the formation of head volume due to the longer duration of the growth period, larger leaves, and differences in climatic conditions.

When averaged over a wide range in soil nitrogen and moisture conditions, cultivar differences in yield and protein content of non-inoculated field peas (Pisum sativum L.) were relatively small. The inherent differences in seed weight were responsible for most of the variations in yield among the three cultivars. Nitrogen fertilization in the growth room experiment markedly increased plant weight, seed yield and protein content, and water-use efficiency was substantially improved. When maintained within the upper half of the available range, soil moisture supply had only a limited influence on plant growth. Periodic wilting did cause a severe reduction in plant weight and seed yield, but there was little change in protein content. For these fertilizer and moisture treatments, responses in seed yield were primarily due to changes in number of pods per plant; the seeds per pod and seed weight were relatively stable. It appeared that field peas were efficient converters of soil nitrogen to seed protein and, in the absence of nitrogen-fixing bacteria, nitrogen fertilization was the principal factor influencing the protein content of field peas. The correlation coefficient between yield and protein content was very low.

Single plants of Festuca arundinacea (cv. S170) were treated with gibberellic acid (GA) and the sequence of effects on the growth of the whole plant and of various organs followed by means of growth analysis. The first effect of GA was to change the distribution of dry matter between shoot and root and between tillers within the shoot without affecting total plant weight. Shoot growth was increased and resulted in a larger amount of photosynthetic tissue with a higher net assimilation rate; total plant weight increased as a consequence of these effects. The significance of these results in interpreting previous work on the effects of GA on dry matter production in grasses and other plants is discussed.

AbstractSri Lankan traditional rice varieties consist of more than one accession mostly which, exhibit a wide variation in morphological characters, flowering time and yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the diversity based on days to flowering (DF) and 12 morphological characters of two Sri Lankan traditional rice varieties Pachchaperumal and Suduru samba comprising of 13 and 7 accessions respectively. DF of Pachchaperumal and Suduru samba varied from 60 - 72 and 79 - 99 days respectively. Vegetative morphological characters and yield components also varied among Pachchaperumal and Suduru samba accessions while pericarp colour, grain width, and length were distinct characters between the two varieties. According to the hierarchical cluster analysis, 2 major clusters were identified at the rescale distance of 25 separating accessions of Pachchaperumal and Suduru samba except for accession 3136 of Pachchaperumal, which was located in Sudura samba cluster. Seven clusters were derived at rescaled distance of 5 where accessions of similar quantitative and qualitative morphological characters were clustered together. There were negative correlations between DF and selected yield components in contrast to positive correlations between DF and selected vegetative growth parameters. Our results may be useful in the determination of identity of accessions belonging to the same variety, which could be further supported by molecular analysis.

Although environmental factors such as precipitation and temperature are recognized as influencing pollen production, the impact of rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) on the potential growth and pollen production of hay-fever-inducing plants is unknown. Here we present measurements of growth and pollen production of common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) from pre-industrial [CO2] (280 mol mol–1) to current concentrations (370 mol mol–1) to a projected 21st century concentration (600 mol mol–1). We found that exposure to current and elevated [CO2] increased ragweed pollen production by 131 and 320%, respectively, compared to plants grown at pre-industrial [CO2]. The observed stimulations of pollen production from the pre-industrial [CO2] were due to an increase in the number (at 370 mol mol–1) and number and size (at 600 mol mol–1) of floral spikes. Overall, floral weight as a percentage of total plant weight decreased (from 21% to 13%), while investment in pollen increased (from 3.6 to 6%) between 280 and 600 mol mol–1 CO2. Our results suggest that the continuing increase in atmospheric [CO2] could directly influence public health by stimulating the growth and pollen production of allergy-inducing species such as ragweed.

The double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-EL1SA) was used to determine the competitive abilities of Rhizobium meliloti strains BALSAC and NRG-185 which are used in commercial alfalfa inoculants for eastern and western Canada, respectively. The ratio of NRG-185:BALSAC in the inoculum applied to aseptically grown alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) was adjusted to 0:100, 1:99, 50:50, 90:10, 99:1, or 100:0. The ratios between nodules containing only the BALSAC strain and nodules containing only strain NRG-185 were similar to their respective inoculum strain ratios. Nodules containing both strains occurred only with the inoculum strain ratio of 50:50. Total plant weights were highest with the two single strain inocula and were decreased 5–19% with dual strain inoculation. The decrease in total plant weight was significantly correlated with decreases in nodule number and nodule weight. The results suggest that R. meliloti strains BALSAC and NRG-185 have equal competitive abilities, but are somewhat antagonistic, resulting in decreased nodulation and plant growth when both are present in an inoculum.

This research was aimed to get the optimum NPK fertilizer dosage with the time of liquid organic fertilizer application to support the growth and yield of pakcoy (Brassica rappa L.). The study used a Randomized Block Design with three replications. Observation variables included plant height, leaf number, leaf area, total plant weight, root length, root weight and total plant weight percentage. The results showed that N0 (without NPK fertilizer) was the best based on the plant height and leaf number. Liquid organic fertilizer given at 3-time applications per plant (W3) contributed significantly to leaf number at 35 days after planting and gave the highest yield of leaves, with 17,45 leaves. The treatment of NPK compound fertilizer dosage with the time of liquid organic fertilizer gave significant effects on the leaf area, total plant weight, root length, and root weight. Penelitian mengunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok dengan tiga ulangan. Peubah-peubah pengamatan meliputi tinggi tanaman, jumlah daun, luas daun, berat total tanaman, panjang akar, berat akar dan persentase berat total tanaman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan N0 (tanpa pupuk NPK) merupakan yang terbaik dari penelitian ini terhadap parameter tinggi tanaman dan jumlah daun. Waktu pemberian pupuk organik cair 3 kali/tanaman (perlakuan W3) memberikan kontribusi yang signifikan terhadap jumlah daun 35 hari setelah tanam dan menghasilkan daun terbanyak dengan jumlah 17,45 helai. Perlakuan dosis pupuk majemuk NPK dengan waktu pemberian pupuk organik cair memberikan pengaruh yang nyata sampai sangat nyata terhadap luas daun, berat total tanaman, panjang akar serta berat akar. Kata kunci: NPK, pakcoy, pupuk organik cair
