Abstract. The excellence in soccer refereeing is a goal attained only by a small number of referees. For a referee to reach this level, he challenges several demands, both in and out of the field, and overcomes some stages in a career spanning approximately two to three decades. This study aimed to identify the career and the path/development of the Portuguese soccer referees who reached the level of excellence and assess their perceptions about the determinant/decisive factors to reach that level. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with referees and former soccer referees who reached the international category, in football or futsal, using a transverse retrospective design. After finishing the data collection, an inductive analysis was carried out and a several personal and environmental common factors were identified. A list of these include: cognitive elements as the game’s knowledge/laws of the game knowledge, physical elements, as endurance, recovery and tiredness, and psychological elements, as the ability/skill of emotional regulation. In the context factors are included, among others, region/place of origin, personal and institutional network of support and the development of parallel careers, such as academic or professional. The results suggest/state: 1) the presence of four different stages in a football referee career; 2) allow a better characterization of the requirements that define excellence in the context of a football referee career; 3) allow national entities, responsible for the selection and training of football referees, to improve their processes/methods.

Abstract Little is known about successful aging (SA) among older (50+) women living with HIV (OWLH). Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to examine subjective understandings of SA among OWLH. Participants were OWLH enrolled in the Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) and those not enrolled in WIHS: 8 in Atlanta, GA (3 WIHS and 5 non-WIHS) and 9 in Brooklyn, NY (6 WIHS and 3 non-WIHS). Semi-structured interviews ranged from 30 to 120 minutes. Several themes emerged in participants’ definitions of SA, e.g. self-care, taking HIV medications, and being resilient (“HIV made me stronger”). Both WIHS and non-WIHS participants emphasized life course perspective in their definitions of SA -- women viewed their aging successful as a more stable phase of life in contrast to hardships they experienced while being younger (e.g., drug use, incarceration). Data collection efforts are ongoing and will allow further characterization of SA among this population.

Abstract Adult education and training (AET) over the life-course is necessary to participate in economic, social, and political activities in the time of globalization and technological advancement. However, little research has been done to identify mechanisms to fund AET opportunities among middle-aged and older adults from a comparative international perspective. Our study aimed to identify strategies to finance AET opportunities for middle-aged and older adults through an international lens, to help identify barriers and facilitators in effort to best support adult learners regardless of education background or socioeconomic characteristics. We carried out a descriptive qualitative study to facilitate an in-depth understanding of funding mechanisms available to adult learners in the selected countries, from the perspective of adult education and policy experts. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with 61 international adult education experts from government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and education institutions. Our informants represented 10 countries including Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Data included at least one in-depth phone or web-based qualitative interview per informant in addition to information gathered from written materials (e.g., peer-reviewed publications and organizational reports). We identified three financing options that arose as themes: government-sponsored funding; employer-sponsored funding; and self-funding. We found that government-sponsored funding is especially important for low-skilled, low-income older adults for whom employer-sponsored or self-funding is not available. Our results have implications for lifelong AET policy changes, such as adaptations of successful AET funding programs across global communities.

Food production through the cultivation industry is one of the promising options because it is able to support the nutritional needs of the community, especially in terms of the adequacy of animal protein. One promising aquaculture product is catfish culture (Clarias batracus) because catfish are known to be able to grow in relatively unfavorable water conditions, have relatively short growth times (2–3 months). Nonetheless, the emergence of diseases that cause mass death and decreased cultivator income have become the main problems lately. Therefore, the purpose of community service is to overcome mass death in order to increase catfish production and diversify post-harvest fish processing to increase community income. The approach includes isolation and characterization of bacteria that cause mass death, bacterial resistance to antibiotics, indigenous probiotic production, and training in making catfish. The results of the dedication showed that there were bacteria that were resistant to antibiotics from isolation from catfish that experienced disease during July to October. In addition, efforts have been made to produce indigenous probiotics from the catfish digestive tract that survive mass death, and training in processing catfish snacks on site. A good response is shown in processing training and it is hoped that in the future these two efforts will be able to increase the economic independenceof the community.

Phenylketonuria is an inborn error of autosomal recessive genetic metabolism, with partial or total deficiency of the hepatic enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase, which converts L-phenylalanine into tyrosine, causing accumulation of phenylalanine at brain and serum levels, interfering with brain protein synthesis causing several damages. This study aimed to characterize patients diagnosed with phenylketonuria at the Neonatal Screening Reference Service from 2008 to 2017. Cross-sectional analytical study with a quantitative approach with retrospective data collection from medical records and databases. Data were grouped as baby gender, date of birth, time of birth and neonatal screening examination collection, type of delivery, gestational age and prenatal status, place of origin, phenylketonuria classification and coverage rate of neonatal screening. The sample consisted of 14 patients, where 64% were male, all mothers had prenatal care and the percentage of cesarean delivery prevailed with 57.2%. Of these 85.7% reside in other states of the country and on the classification of the type of phenylketonuria 64.3% have mild phenylketonuria, as for the coverage rate there was a drop in the number of collections in the reference service. This research contributed to characterize the patient diagnosed with phenylketonuria, which allows greater knowledge about the disease carriers, as well as favoring the reduction of irreversible sequels, expenses and morbidity.

Landscapes are formed by physical elements of material order and abstract elements of immaterial order, so their management and planning should consider these two aspects. Aiming to understand the landscapes of Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais State, the appropriation by the actors who work in the landscape was identified and classified, and also its dynamics from 1973 to 2015. The research analyzed the current landscape and its historical evolution, distinguishing material and immaterial dimensions, from field trips, soil types, relief, slope, drainage, conservation units, administrative zoning, urban areas, natural resources, transport and building infrastructure, satellite images, and semi-structured interviews. As a result, a map with the landscape units and their subunits, which have distinct characteristics, with their proper settings was obtained. The landscape has continuous boundaries with various operating scales, posing a major challenge for its proper management. The number of generated ecosystem services are difficult to measure, but its benefits are used by everyone. The dynamics of the landscape has been shaped by a slow evolution, set by mining activities, including revegetation areas after clear cuts and currently the inclusion of tourism in certain regions.

Background: Prostheses are used to varying degrees; however, little is known about how environmental aspects influence this use. Objectives: To describe users’ experiences of how environmental factors influence their use of a myoelectric arm prosthesis. Study design: Qualitative and descriptive. Methods: A total of 13 patients previously provided with a myoelectric prosthetic hand participated. Their age, sex, deficiency level, etiology, current prosthesis use, and experience varied. Semi-structured interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed through inductive content analysis. Results: Four categories were created from the data: “Prosthesis function,” “Other people’s attitudes,” “Support from family and healthcare,” and “Individual’s attitude and strategies.” The overarching theme, “Various degrees of embodiment lead to different experiences of environmental barriers and facilitators,” emerged from differences in individual responses depending on whether the individual was a daily or a non-daily prosthesis user. Environmental facilitators such as support from family and healthcare and good function and fit of the prosthesis seemed to help the embodiment of the prosthesis, leading to daily use. This embodiment seemed to reduce the influence of environmental barriers, for example, climate, attitudes, and technical shortcomings. Conclusion: Embodiment of prostheses seems to reduce the impact of environmental barriers. Support and training may facilitate the embodiment of myoelectric prosthesis use. Clinical relevance For successful prosthetic rehabilitation, environmental factors such as support and information to the patient and their social network about the benefits of prosthesis use are important. Local access to training in myoelectric control gives more people the opportunity to adapt to prosthesis use and experience less environmental barriers.

Background: Older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) receive fewer guideline-concordant treatments for multiple health conditions than those with normal cognition. Reasons for this disparity are unclear. Objective: To better understand this disparity, we describe physician understanding and experience with patient MCI, particularly physician identification of MCI, ability to distinguish between MCI and dementia, and perspectives on education and training in MCI and dementia. Methods: As part of a mixed-methods study assessing the influence of patient MCI on physician recommendations for acute myocardial infraction and stroke treatments, we conducted a descriptive qualitative study using semi-structured interviews of physicians from three specialties. Key question topics included participants’ identification of MCI, impressions of MCI and dementia awareness within their practice specialty, and perspectives on training and education in MCI. Results: The study included 22 physicians (8 cardiologists, 7 neurologists, and 7 internists). We identified two primary themes: There is 1) a lack of adequate understanding of the distinction between MCI and dementia; and 2) variation in physician approaches to identifying whether an older adult has MCI. Conclusion: These findings suggest that physicians have a poor understanding of MCI. Our results suggest that interventions that improve physician knowledge of MCI are needed.
