Purpose: The menstrual cycle has been reported to influence many other physiological processes in women. This study ascertained the effect of menstruation on oculovisual status with emphasis on tear production among young female undergraduates of Madonna University, Elele Campus Rivers State Nigeria.   Methodology: The study involved 103 female undergraduates with fairly regular menstrual cycle selected through convenience sampling technique. Their age ranged from 16-30 years with a mean age of 20.82 ± 3.205 years and a median age of 20 years. A well-structured interviewer administered questionnaire was used to elicit oculovisual symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle. Schirmer’s test strip was used to measure tear volume at pre-determined intervals of the menstrual flow period. External and internal eye examinations were also carried out using the Pen torch and ophthalmoscope respectively. Data collected were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21 and results were expressed using tables and correlation of variables expressed using Dunnett’s multiple comparison test. Findings: There was a significant increase (p ˂ 0.05) in tear production during the first two days of the flow and a slight decrease during the last two days. Comparison of the right and left eyes showed no statistically significant (p ˃ 0.05) difference. Variation in tear production associated with menstruation with respect to age showed statistically significant (p ˂ 0.05) differences for all age groups except for the right eye of subjects within age group 26–30 years. While 52.4% (n=54 ) of the ladies have no oculovisual complaint, the  most common oculovisual complaint was headache 42.7% (n = 44) followed by blurry vision 2.91 % (n = 3) and excessive tearing 1.94% (n = 2). Contribution to Knowledge: The study revealed that physiological changes likely resulting from hormonal variation  during the menstrual flow influences tear volume and may cause visual discomfort among women within the reproductive age and recommended the need for tear volume assessment and detailed case history prior to management of complaints associated with dry eye and dispensing of contact lenses for pre and post-menopausal women.

Ectopic pregnancy (EP) has been found to be a common cause of morbidity, and on occasion, mortality among women in the reproductive age groups. The incidence of EP is 1-2% of all pregnancies. 93-97% of EP are tubal with the interstitial type consisting only 3-4%. A 31-year-old female patient with primary infertility underwent IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). Pregnancy was confirmed by βHCG (beta human chorionic gonadotropin). Her ultrasonography reported a mass in the right cornual region. The uterine cavity was empty. Laparoscopy was performed followed by resection of the right cornua with tubes. Histopathology report confirmed the diagnosis of Interstitial Pregnancy (IP). The patient had an uneventful post-operative period and was discharged the next day. EP is a common complication seen in cases undergoing IVF, and IP is a rare form of EP. Hence, early diagnosis and prompt intervention is required to avoid a potentially life-threatening situation.

This study explored the influence exerted by celebrity endorsement on the purchase of slim tea products by female undergraduate students in universities in southeast Nigeria. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the relationship between the brand image of slime tea and celebrity endorsement, identify how celebrity choice influences the brand image of a product, and also examine how female undergraduate students’ choice of brand product is driven by celebrity influence. The population of this study consisted of female undergraduate students in the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Madonna University Okija, and Ebonyi State University Abakiliki. A multistage sampling technique was used to arrive at a required sample size of 383. I did an oversampling and a total of 400 copies of the questionnaire were distributed and 392 copies of this questionnaire were filled and returned, making for a return rate of 98%. Findings from this study showed that respondents believe that celebrity endorsement can influence their brand choice. And that the choice of celebrity used matters a lot. If an organization fails to provide a positive and strong brand image, it may directly or indirectly affect consumers’ decision-making; as consumers may shift to competitors that offer a better experience. From the findings of this study, it is recommended that advertisers should make use of the right celebrities to enhance the brand image of their products and also consider celebrities whose profession and lifestyle are in sync with the products and services that they are endorsing.

Reproductive age, ovarian reserve and reproductive capability may be determined from the volume of the ovary. A cross-sectional, descriptive study was done in the Department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, from January to December 2009, to see the variation in the volume of the ovary with age in Bangladeshi women. The study was performed on 140 post mortem human ovaries collected from 70 unclaimed female dead bodies which were in the morgue under examination in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. The samples were divided into three age-groups including group A (10-13 years), group B (14-45 years) & group C (46-52 years). Group A is pre-menarche group, group B represents reproductive age and group C is post menopausal group. The length, breadth and thickness of each ovary were measured by using a slide calipers. Then the volume of each ovary was determined by the product of its length, breadth and thickness multiplied by 0.524, according to the Prolate ellipsoid formula. The mean volume of the right ovary was found higher than that of the left one in all age groups (p<0.001). The difference in mean volume of the ovary between group A & group B, group B & group C (p<0.001) and group A & group C (p<0.01) were also statistically significant. The volume of the ovary increases with age and then gradually starts to decrease from menopause. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bmrcb.v40i1.20323 Bangladesh Med Res Counc Bull 2014; 40: 15-17

Introduction: A wide variability of bilateral asymmetry in human has been observed within the population. However sufficient attention has not been given to the difference present in the limbs especially the tibial bones. It is generally assumed that the both limbs of the individual are with insignificant differences. The objective of the study is to find the prevalence of bilateral asymmetry of the tibial bone length of the same individual and distribution in between the two genders. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 students of Kathmandu Medical College and Teaching Hospital after obtaining ethical approval. Simple Random Sampling technique was used. The right and the left tibial length were recorded for different genders Results: Bilateral asymmetry in the tibial bone length was observed in 66 (44%) [41.58%- 46.42% at 95% CI] of the subjects which was recorded more in males 98 (65.15%) than in females. The minimum and maximum differences between the tibial length present was 0.1mm and 0.8 mm respectively with a mean of 0.2136 mm. Among the three age groups, tibial length asymmetry was observed highest 67 (45.56%) in Group B (20-22 years). Asymmetry in length was seen more in the right tibia with male preponderance over female. Conclusions: Asymmetry in the tibial bones length should be given proper attention and proper diagnosis and treatment of leg discrepancies should be done.

Context and rationale: The age related infertility due to early ovarian ageing is one of the problems for women who want to become pregnant in late age in our country. Ovarian ageing reflects in its morphology. So this study was aimed at determining the gross morphology of the ovary in different age groups of Bangladeshi female (cadaver) to assess the possible relationships among different morphological variable of ovaries in different age groups. The present study would serve as a baseline data for the gynecologist, obstetricians and endocrinologist about the onset of infertility in the context of Bangladesh. Materials and methods: Cross sectional analytical type of study was conducted at the department of Anatomy, Rangpur Medical College, Rangpur. Fifty pairs postmortem human ovaries from Bangladeshi female aged between 15 and 45 years were examined for morphological study. The morphological parameters such as length, breadth, circumference, weight and volume of the right and left ovaries determined by physical method and the data were compared between different age groups. Result: Mean length, circumference and volume were significantly higher in group A than the other groups in both right and left sides. The difference reached a significant level (P< 0.05) in both ovaries in between and within groups for all mentioned parameter. The mean breadth of right ovary in group B and mean breadth of left ovary in group A were larger than the other groups but was not significant. Conclusion: The values of the morphological measurements fall from younger to older women. This may be due to depletion of the ovarian non-growing follicles thus reflecting fall in the ovarian reserve.
