Effects of ensiled greenhouse wastes (GHW), alkali-treated GHW and almond hulls (AH) on growth performance were studied on 24 Assaf lambs. All lambs were males with an average weight of 36.2 kg (S.D. = 2.1 kg) at the beginning of the experiment. Animals were randomly divided into 4 groups of 6 lambs each. Lambs in each group received individually corn-soybean meal (SBM) total mixed rations (TMR). Rations were incorporated with a fixed amount (200 g/kg) of the treated raw ingredients: ensiled greenhouse wastes, alkali-treated GHW and ensiled AH. All rations were isonitrogenous and isocaloric. The growth experiment lasted 80 d. Both chemical and biological treatments had significant effects on improving crude protein (CP) and fiber fractions. At termination of the experiment, lambs fed treated ingredients (i.e., ensiled GHW, alkali-treated GHW, ensiled AH) had better (P < 0.05) feed conversion ratios and consumed less (P < 0.05) feed. Treated GHW and AH had no effect on average daily gain (P = 0.14) and total gain (P = 0.21). Cost of gain was significantly lower in lambs fed the treated ingredients.

<p class="Style2"><em>The aim of this research to determine the effect of supplementation of tofu. </em><em>tempe, and soy sauce waste in ration on male local sheep performance. This </em><em>research was carried out during three month, take place on July until October </em><em>200E in Minifarm Dept. of Animal Science, Agriculture Faculty of Sebelas Maret </em><em>University, located in Jatikuwung. Gondangrejo, Karanganyar. It used </em><em>12 </em><em>male </em><em>local sheeps with average body weight of </em><em>15.86 ±0.93 </em><em>kg, divided into four treatments and three replications, each replication consist of one sheep.</em><em> </em><em>The ration consisted of king grass only as basal diet, </em><em>as many as four percent </em><em>base on body weight. The treatment given is in the form of feed supplement, that </em><em>namely without supplement </em><em>(RO), </em><em>250 </em><em>gram tofu waste (R1), </em><em>250 </em><em>gram tempe </em><em>waste </em><em>(R2), and </em><em>250 </em><em>gram soy sauce waste </em><em>(R3). </em><em>The data variables collected </em><em>were </em><em>feed consumption, dry and organic matter digestibility, crude protein </em><em>consumption, energy consumption, average daily gain, and feed conversion ratio. </em><em>All of data except average daily gain was analyzed by completely randomized </em><em>design one way classification. While average daily gain was analyzed by </em><em>covariance analyze. The result were significant followed by Duncan new multiple </em><em>range test.</em><em> </em><em>The result showed that average of </em><em>R0, RI, </em><em>R2 and </em><em>R3 </em><em>for feed consumption </em><em>430.52; 720.44; 704.44; 549.08 </em><em>gram/day, dry matter digestibility (%) </em><em>61,07; 72,46; 69,68: 63,60, organic matter digestibility (%) </em><em>64,41: 74,94; 72.41; 64,7 1, </em><em>crude protein consumption 47.66; 106.77; 85.83; 73.70 gram/day, energy consumption </em><em>281.82; 482.65; 432.67; 330.83 </em><em>gram/day, average daily gain </em><em>50.00.</em><em><sup>­</sup></em><em>1X00: 116.19; 38.10 </em><em>gram/day and feed conversion ratio </em><em>8.74; 5.61; 6.06; 15.2. </em><em>The result of variance analyze showed that feed supplementation have highly </em><em>significant effect (P&lt;0.01) on all of the data variable colected. The study was conducted to investigate the effects of Broussonetia papyrifera (BP) on growth performance, rumen fermentation, digestion and meat quality in Huanghuai white goats. Diets were developed with increasing doses of BP to replace maize silage [0% (control), 15% (BP15), 30% (BP30) and 45% (BP45)]. The design was completely randomized with 4 groups of 10 animals each, totalizing 40 animals (aged 150 ± 10 days and body weight of 25.32 ± 0.52 kg). Final body weight, average daily gain and average daily feed intake increased (linear and quadratic, P &lt; 0.05) as BP increased in the diet. The highest body weight and average daily gain were seen in the BP30 group. Feed conversion ratio also improved significantly (linear and quadratic, P &lt; 0.05) with the increasing level of BP. Although the concentration of microbial protein (MCP) in a linear (P = 0.0028) and quadratic (P = 0.0035) fashion with increasing level of BP, however, NH<sub>3</sub>-N in a quadratic (P = 0.0841) fashion with increasing level of BP. Crude protein was increased with increasing BP in the diets (linear and quadratic, P &lt; 0.05). Nitrogen intake, urinary excretion nitrogen and nitrogen retention were significantly improved (linear and quadratic, P &lt; 0.05) with dietary BP addition in goats. Dietary BP supplementation increased pH (linear and quadratic, P &lt; 0.05) and tended to reduce L* (lightness) (linear and quadratic, P &lt; 0.05). Additionally, the redness value of meat was significantly improved by BP addition (linear and quadratic, P &lt; 0.05). The inclusion of BP in the goat diet promotes growth and increases the digestibility of crude protein in addition to improving the meat colour and rumen fermentation.

To evaluate the effects of shearing and Ralgro® implants on the performance of fast-gaining feedlot lambs during the summer, 84 group-fed crossbred wether lambs (34.8 ± 1.8 kg) were shorn on day 0 of the feeding period (ES), shorn 3 wk later (LS), or left unshorn (NS), and either implanted with 12 mg Ralgro on day 0 (R) or not implanted (C). Lambs were blocked by initial weight. Heavy and light pens of lambs were shipped to market when the average weight within a pen was 52 kg after 40 and 55 d, respectively. Between days 0 and 40, mean average daily gain (ADG) of all lambs was 384 g and feed conversion was 4.38 kg dry matter kg−1 gain. During the first 40 d of the feeding period, shearing did not affect ADG (P > 0.05), but ES lambs had higher feed intake and poorer feed conversion than NS lambs (P < 0.05). Performance of the LS lambs was similar to the NS lambs prior to shearing, and similar to the ES lambs after shearing. A delay period between implantation and growth response was observed. Ralgro did not affect ADG between days 0 and 21 (P > 0.05) but improved ADG by 14.2% between days 21 and 40 (P < 0.01), giving an overall growth improvement of 6.5% between days 0 and 40 (P < 0.06). Ralgro had no effect on ADG after day 40. There were no interactions between the effects of shearing and Ralgro implantation on ADG (P > 0.05). Key words: Lambs, shearing, Ralgro, feedlot, summer

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of sheep fed with diets consisting of different proportions of soybean silage and sugarcane tip silage. Twenty four lambs from Morada Nova breed were used, with an average age of 75 days and average weight of 16.98±2.62kg. The following diets were evaluated: T1 = 20% sugarcane tops silage + 80% concentrate, T2 = 20% sugarcane tops silage + 30% soybean silage + 50% concentrate, T3 = 20% sugarcane tops silage + 60% soybean silage + 20% concentrate. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with eight repetitions and each animal was a repetition. It was evaluated the intake of dry matter, organic matter, ash, crude protein, ether extract, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, weight gain, and feed conversion ratio and efficiency. The total weight gain, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio and efficiency were similar, with average values of 7.9kg animal-1, 133.3g animal-1 day-1, 6.2 and 0.17, respectively. Diets based on sugarcane tops silage enriched with soybean silage + concentrate provide greater nutrient intake in relation to diet composed only of sugarcane tops silage + concentrate. Sugarcane tops silage supplemented with protein concentrate or enriched with soybean silage with lower inclusion of concentrate resulted in similar weight gains and feed conversion efficiency.

The influence of supplementation of a lecithin emulsifier (0.1%) to the feed mixture for piglets after weaning was studied. 16 piglets in the control group (C &ndash; without lecithin) and 16 piglets in an experimental (E) group were monitored in three replications in a 28-day experimental period. We observed higher digestibility of monitored nutrients in the experimental group (crude fat: C = 66.28 &plusmn; 12.11, E = 69.75 &plusmn; 9.85%, crude protein: C = 78.72 &plusmn; 5.47, E = 82.17 &plusmn; 2.23%, crude fibre: C = 56.70 &plusmn; 12.85, E = 59.10 &plusmn; 12.04%, nitrogen free extract: C&nbsp;=&nbsp;86.67 &plusmn; 3.32, E = 87.75 &plusmn; 3.00%, ash: C = 63.63 &plusmn; 11.59, E = 65.73 &plusmn; 10.35%). Statistically insignificantly higher daily average gain (C = 374.1 &plusmn; 107.0, E = 399.1 &plusmn; 104.7 g) of experimental groups and a lower feed conversion ratio (C = 2.285 &plusmn; 0.416, E = 1.768 &plusmn; 0.048 kg/kg) were found out. It was also confirmed in an additional field experiment (C = 279, E = 312 piglets from birth to 71 days of age) where average daily gain weight was 270 g in control and 290 g in experimental group. The influence of lecithin on the occurrence of haemolytic strains of Escherichia coli was not proved. This experiment confirmed a positive effect of the lecithin emulsifier supplement on the efficiency of piglets. &nbsp;

In order to evaluate the ethnoveterinary effect of Macleaya cordata extract on bacteria colony forming units (CFU) in different organs of gastrointestinal tract and productive parameters of broilers challenged with Salmonella typhimurium, eighty one day old Cobb broilers were randomly assigned either to a diet without additive or with additive at 50 g/ton during 21 days. The count of CFU of Salmonella typhimurium in crop, gizzard, and duodenum, at 21 days, showed broilers that received the Macleaya cordata extract had a reduction. The broilers also had higher final body weight, total gain, average daily gain and better feed conversion value as compared with those that had not received it. Feed intake was not affected. Results concluded that Macleaya cordata extract is an ethnoveterinary alternative efficient for control of Salmonella typhimurium and a growth promoter in broilers.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of young Nellore bulls and of young dual-purpose dairy bulls fed proportions of 'Mulato II' grass silage (400 and 100 g kg-1), in diets with high levels of concentrate, as well as to evaluate the cost of this feed. Sixteen young Nellore bulls and 16 young dairy crossbred bulls were used, with initial average weight of 380.69±10.45 and 376.94±17.16 kg, respectively, and average initial age of 24 months. A completely randomized experimental design was carried out in a 2x2 factorial arrangement. The highest silage proportion caused a 13% increase in dry matter intake (percentage of body weight) and a 19.7% decrease in dry matter digestibility of the diet, but it did not alter the intake of total digestible nutrients, nor the average daily gain or carcass characteristics. Nutrient intake and digestibility, average daily gain, and carcass characteristics (except conformation) did not change due to the genetic group of animals. Feed conversion was 18.3% better in young dairy bulls. In diets with high levels of concentrate, the proportion of 400 g kg-1 of 'Mulato II' grass silage, in comparison with that of 100 g kg-1, does not affect the productive performance, nor the main carcass characteristics of economic interest of confined young bulls, but reduces feeding costs.

Thai pangas, Pangasius hypophthalmus fingerlings were reared for 60 days in laboratory condition to investigate the effects of feeding frequency on the growth performance. The fish fingerlings in three treatments were fed with two, three and four times a day, respectively. During the feeding trial, growth and feed utilization were assessed by condition factor (K), average daily gain (ADG), specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Significantly lower FCR 1.81 ± 0.02 and higher ADG 0.38 ± 0.02 and SGR 2.20 ± 0.02% were found in fish fed thrice a day than that of other treatments (p < 0.05). Highest condition factor 1.69 ± 0.13 was found in fish fed four times a day while the lowest condition factor 0.77 ± 0.03 was detected in fish fed twice a day. Moisture content of Thai pangas in treatment T1, T2 and T3 were 79.23 ± 0.77, 78.08 ± 0.85 and 77.84 ± 0.17%, respectively. The crude protein, crude lipid and ash contents were 16.11 ± 0.00 to 16.38 ± 0.08%, 3.22 ± 0.27 to 3.41 ± 0.06% and 1.47 ± 0.02 to 1.82 ± 0.04%, respectively. The findings of the present study demonstrated that three times feeding frequency showed better growth performance and nutritional composition of Thai pangas fingerlings. Dhaka Univ. J. Biol. The effects of the use of fish meal in the nutrition of weaning piglets were observed. The trial included 80 weaned piglets of the same genotype (Large White x Danish Landrace) distributed in two feeding treatments. In the first period of the experiment, animals were fed during 10 feeding days, with a prestarter mixture containing 21.1/20.8% of the crude protein. The second period lasted for 25 days and piglets were fed with mixture containing also 21.0/21.1% of the crude protein. And in the final period of the experiment, which lasted 22 feeding days, the meals were formulated to contain 19.5/19.9% of the crude protein. The control group was fed with standard farm mixtures, while the trial group were fed with mixtures containing 4/3/2% of fish meal. The obtained results showed that the use of fish meal resulted in better average daily gain and feed conversion in starter period (27-51 day).

Muqorrobin A, Subagyo YBP, Sudiyono. 2008. The effect of temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza) flour addition in ration to male local lamb performance. Biofarmasi 6: 31-35. The aim of this research was to find out the effect of temulawak flour in ration to male local lamb performance. This research was conducted in Minifarm of Animal Husbandry Program of Agriculture Faculty of Sebelas Maret University located in Jatikuwung, Gondangrejo, Karanganyar on September 13th, 2007 until November 23rd, 2007. This research used 16 lambs with 12.07±1.11 kg of body weight. The design used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with oneway classification divided into four treatments and each treatment (P0, P1, P2, P3) consisted of four replications and each replication used one male local lamb. The treatments were P0 = 60% grass field + 40% concentrate + 0% temulawak flour (as a control); P1 = control + 0.5% temulawak flour; P2 = control + 1% temulawak flour; and P3 = control + 1.5% temulawak flour. The parameters observed were dry matter intake (in BK), average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion, and feed cost per gain. The data were analyzed by variance analysis to feed consumption, crude protein intake, and feed conversion and covariance analysis for average daily gain. The results of variance analysis showed that the addition of temulawak flour until level of 1.5% in ration gave non-significant effect (P≥0.05) to feed intake, crude protein intake, and feed conversion. The covariance analysis for average daily gain (ADG) also showed the same result, nonsignificant effect. The average of the treatments of P0, P1, P2 and P3 were: (i) the dry matter intake were 649.98, 589.99, 596.75, and 594.33 grams/head/day; (ii) crude protein intake were 99.02, 95.61, 96.67, and 96.40 grams/head/day, (iii) average daily gain (ADG) were 82.59, 73.22, 81.70, and 86.61 grams/head/day, (iv) feed conversion were 8.11, 8.19, 7.39, and 7.40; and (v) feed cost per gain were Rp9,499.87, Rp10,072.35, Rp9,523.28, and Rp9,976.14, respectively. The conclusion of this research was the addition of temulawak flour until level of 1.5% from total ration did not need to be used in male local lamb livestock rations, because there was not an effect on the performance of male local lamb.
