Local extinction of native Atlantic Forest flora species occurs mainly due to habitat fragmentation. Reforestation and natural regeneration can mitigate these factors. The present study attempts to understand whether floristic composition and dispersal processes are being reestablished in an area of lowland Atlantic Forest, eight years after its reforestation. The study area was an old pasture set between two urban fragments in the city of Recife that was reforested in 2011. Melastomataceae species were collected in this area and the morphology of their fruits was compared with the species of the family recorded in the adjacent fragments. Miconia prasina, M. albicans, M. affinis, Clidemia hirta, and C. capitellata have been found in the reforested area. Although there are species with larger fruits in the adjacent fragments, there was no statistically significant difference between the means of the two areas. The fruit morphology indicates that the species found in the area are dispersed by birds and small mammals. It is possible to conclude that the reforested area already presents the expected ecological processes for a corridor between two fragments. Thus, the two adjacent areas serve as vectors for the colonization of native Atlantic Forest species in the reforested area.

Based on studies of floristic lists the contribution of forest tree and shrub species in a forested savanna area in the city of Bauru, State of São Paulo, and in 14 different places sheltering cerrado sensu stricto and cerradão in Brazil is defined as the evidence of forest species causing a change of cerrado heterogeneity. The percentages of occurrence of forest species in the locations analyzed varied from zero to 4.5%. The proximity of different forest matrices, the occurrence of fires and the inclusion criteria used were some of the factors that may have influenced such variation.

This study aimed to compare coping strategies in children of parents deceased from cancer and children of parents healed from cancer in the city of Shiraz, Iran. One-hundred and fifteen people [58 children of parents healed from cancer and 57 children of parents deceased from cancer] were recruited in this study via a convenience sampling method. Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations was used to measure different types of coping strategies [task-oriented coping strategy, emotion-oriented coping strategy, and avoidance coping strategy]. The results showed that the children of parents healed from cancer used task-oriented coping strategy significantly more than children of parents deceased from cancer. Moreover, the results showed that the use of emotion-oriented coping strategy in children of parents deceased from cancer was significantly more than children of parents healed from cancer. No significant difference was observed between the two groups in the use of avoidance coping. This study highlights the importance of coping strategies in families with a cancer parent which demand the importance of teaching appropriate coping strategies in order to reduce the adverse consequence of cancer in the family.

Abstract The impact of ungulates on the forest vegetation has far-reaching consequences: it decreases species diversity and the production of biomass, causes soil dehydration, erosion and eutrophication the entire forest community. The article addresses the influence of fallow deer and mouflon on the forest vegetation in the Holedná game reserve (western border of the city of Brno, South Moravia, Czech Republic) and compares differences with the forests adjacent to the game reserve. Sixty localities were distributed randomly and phytosociological relevés subsequently recorded there according to the age of the stands inside and outside of the game reserve. The differences in floristic composition were compared for trees, shrubs and herbs, the herb layer species number, the diversity indices and the values of Ellenberg indicators. In the game reserve, a significant difference was found in the coverage of the herb and shrub layer, which was significantly lower than outside the territory. Furthermore, the increased amount of nitrophilous, heliophytes and ruderal herb species inside the game reserve exhibited affiliation to the interior of game reserve. Besides, young trees and woody sapling were less abundant or even missing inside of game reserve. By contrast, the frequency of typical species of oak-hornbeam forests was higher outside game reserve. Due to the higher number of animals and consequent disturbances, nitrophilous plant species dominate in the herb layer of the game reserve, while forest species are more often represented outside it.

The process of disordered urbanization was reduced drastically as the natural areas, which formerly was necessary, the current times of occurrence of empty spaces, which was not different in the City of Recife, but not the District of Dois Irmãos. With the purpose of protecting a fragment of the Atlantic Forest and reducing the pressure on the environment, a state conservation unit was created called Dois Irmãos State Park (PEDI). In this perspective, the study had an objective of surveying the species of shrubs and the analysis of the phytosanitary present in the arborization of the zoological sector of the State Park of Dois Irmãos. With the objective of subsidizing the promotion and development of activities related to environmental education. The survey of plants was made from new census models. In this inventory 369 arboreal individuals were present at the PEDI Zoo, belonging to 25 botanical families, 48 genera and 60 species. Among these are the species, two were of gender level and one was classified as indeterminate. Of the species studied, 70% are natural, 25% exotic and 5% remain unclassified. Regarding plant health, 81.57% of the population is in good condition, 3.52% regular and 14.9% bad. From the DAP and the DAP, it is possible to infer that the data is compiled by processes in the adult phase. It is hoped that this is a game of the child by the Park, in order to promote and disseminate the knowledge of the species inserted in it, thus seeking to raise awareness of the benefits generated by them.

Despite being one of the most heterogeneous Brazilian biomes, regardless of being the least known, the Caatinga is under strong anthropism. In this way the forest management offers techniques that, when used, guarantees the maintenance of the sustainability of the productive system, sustainability that is guaranteed through the resilience of the regenerative stratum. Thus the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of forest management on natural regeneration in a caatinga area, under different cutting ages. The study was developed in the settlement of the agrarian reform, Brandão III, located in the city of Cuité-PB. To evaluate the natural regeneration, 40 plots measuring 5 × 5 m (25 m2) were randomly allocated within the plots exploited and in the Legal Reserve. All individuals with Circumference at baseline (CNB) ≤ 6 cm and with a minimum height of 0.5m were measured, and distributed in three height classes. A C1: 0.5 m < H < 0.99 m; C2: 1.0 m ≤ H < 1.99 m and C3: H > 2.0 m. The data of density, richness and number of individuals by type of regeneration origin were compared by the Tukey test at 5% significance. We sampled 2021 individuals, represented by 32 species, 27 genera distributed in 16 families. The exploration did not cause significant changes to the floristic composition nor to the richness of the species. The exploration and the time elapsed between the cut and the measurement influenced the increase of the density.

The present study included the diagnosis of three species of hard ticks belong to the family Ixodidae parasitizing 72 cows out of a total of 145 cows examined, with a total distribution ratio of 49.6% in the eastern and western regions of Mosul city. Tick species were diagnosed according to morphological and standard characteristics such as palps, capitulum, coxa, scutum, anus, and spiracles. Ticks of H. anatolicum anatolicum recorded the highest prevalence and distribution ratio in cows of 48.6%, followed by both B. annulatus and R. turanicus with 34.7%, 16.7% respectively. As for specifying the patterns of ticks’ distribution on cows, it was observed that a pattern of single infestation recorded the highest distribution ratio of 51%, followed by a double-infestation of 19.4%, while a mixed infestation pattern recorded the lowest ratio of 9.7%. With regard to the distribution of tick species on the body areas per tick species, the results showed the prevalence and distribution of H. anatolicum anatolicum tick species on the back was 44.1%, B. anaulatus recorded the highest prevalence ratio of 29% in the ear, while R. truanicus recorded the highest prevalence in the ear, back, and Axillary of 37.1%, 28.5%, and 20% respectively. The results concerning the distribution of tick species in each area of the body showed the prevalence of H. anatolicum anatolicum in the ear area by 51.1%, both H. anatolicum and anatolicum recorded the highest prevalence ratio in the tail by 51.6% and 43.6% respectively, and the highest prevalence of H. anatolicum and anatolicum species was found in the back by 72%, while the highest prevalence of B.annaulatus was found in the udder and Axillary of 57.9% and 56.4% respectively. Nevertheless, the results illustrated that no significant difference had been found regarding the distribution and prevalence of tick species in the eastern and western regions of the city of Mosul.

This study aimed to understand post-agricultural natural forest regeneration in the Southern Brazilian Atlantic Forest and its possible role as a cost-effective, passive approach to forest restoration. The study characterized vegetation structure, floristic composition, and the dynamics of secondary forest chronosequences. Data were collected from 159 plots (10 × 10 m each) across forest remnants in Santa Catarina State, covering forest ages that ranged from 2 to 60 years of regeneration after swidden agriculture. Only areas with no signs of degradation were sampled in order to provide a description of vegetation characteristics that could be used to identify and monitor natural regeneration. A total of 11,455 woody plants were identified and classified into 334 species representing 71 families. As the succession process unfolds, the continuous turnover of species makes forests more diverse and structurally complex. Floristic similarity among forest types is observed during the early stages of succession, but decreases over time. Pioneer species dominate young secondary forests, representing about 40% of the basal area up to 10 years of regeneration. Shade-tolerant species start colonizing the sites at early ages; however, they become more important structural elements only after 30 years of succession. The observed patterns of forest structure and species diversity largely conform to the post-agricultural succession seen in many tropical forests. The high species diversity found in this study highlights the importance of natural regeneration as a strategy to restore ecosystems. Floristic data can be used as a reference for choosing suitable species for active restoration, as well as contributing to the design of integrated restoration strategies. We herein reinforce the potential of natural regeneration as part of large-scale restoration programs, which would be particularly attractive to family farmers by the low cost of supplies and labor.

This article deals with the results of study of species content and basic peculiarities of beaked mites-Phytoseiidae in plant associations of one of the regional centers of Ukraine. The species composition and distribution of mites-Phytoseiidae (Parasitiformes, Phytoseiidae) in plantations of Brovary town of Kyiv region were determined. Fourteen species of 8 genera of phytoseiid mites were found. Index of their existing and relative biotope connection of each registered species to vegetation types and plant species were computed. The study was conducted according to the results of material treatment on the territory of the mentioned city from 25 species of plants (16 species of hardy-shrub and 9 of herbaceous vegetations). The studies of distribution of plant-living mites-Phytoseiidae were conducted separately for hardy-shrub and herbaceous plants). The collection of faunistic material was executed during the vegetation of periods of 2011 and 2013. Within the city the collection of the material was conducted with hardy-shrub plants and herbaceous type of vegetation along the streets, in parks and squares of Brovary city of Kyiv region, district center, one of the satellite-cities of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The study of species complexes characteristics of mites was conducted with usage of data calculated on the basis of frequency index (Is), degree of relative habitat confinedness (F) (Pesenko, 1982) and domination index Paliy-Kovnatski (Di) (Shitikov, 2003). Only on one species of plant (F=1) 6 species of mites-Phytoseiidae were found – T.сotoneastri on blue spruce, T. laurae – on common spruce, T. aceri – on ash-leaved maple, P. incognitus – on dog-rose, P. soleiger – on mulberry-tree, A. caudiglans – on sea-buckthorn. These species can be related to stenoecic. The mentioned species are stenotopic only in relation to the sample of plants from the plant associations of Brovary, as in other regions these species of mites can populate the other species of plants. The rest 8 species, being registered on two or more types of plants, are related to euryoecic. Among them there is a group of 6 species with “positive tendencies to population of plants”, owning the indicators of habitat confinedness 0<F<1: A. andersoni (0,92–0,96), A. rademacheri (0,85–0,96), N. herbarius (0,92–0,96), T. tiliarum (0,66–0,77), A. pirianykae (0,73–0,99), A. clavata (0,82–0,98). The rest species, E. finlandicus и K. aberrans, have the expanded range of indicators in relation to habitat confinedness (-0,71<F<0,55 и -0,16<F<0,88), that specifies on their ability to populate the big quality of species. E. finlandicus has the negative indicator of relative habitat confinedness in relation to the plants of herbaceous morphotype that serves confirmation of the ecological peculiarity of the species detected earlier. The data of relative habitat confinedness of mites to certain species of plants shows availability of stenoecic (T.сotoneastri, T. laurae, T. aceri, P. incognitus, P. soleiger, A. caudiglans) and euryoecic species (A. andersoni, A. rademacheri, N. herbarius, E. finlandicus, K. aberrans, T. tiliarum, A. pirianykae, A. clavata).
