There are 90% diabetes mellitus sufferers in the world. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a degenerative disease that has increased every year in countries. Diabetes Mellitus if not handled properly will lead to complications. Cooperation between patients and families is expected to prevent chronic complications of DM, by providing information through health promotion. In this study using "pre post test non control group design" where a group before a certain treatment (x) is given a pretest, then given treatment and after the treatment is carried out a post test or a measurement to determine the consequences of the treatment. The independent variable is family health promotion, while the dependent variable is the management of patients with Diabetes Mellitus. This study uses "purposive sampling". In this sampling, families that meet the criteria and can represent the characteristics of the population are selected, namely a family with one of the family members suffering from Diabetes Mellitus. Family health promotion significantly provides a change for the better towards improving the role of the family in the management of family members with DM as shown from the pre-test and post-test data which is then tested with the Kendal tau test on all components of the management of family members with DM. There is a significant influence between family health promotion on improving the role of the family in the management of family members with DM at the Kebakramat 1 Health Center where there is an improvement in the role of the family in the management of family members with DM.

The objective of this study was to determine the magnitude of nonadherence and its contributing factors among diabetic patients attending the diabetic clinic in Adama Hospital.Methods.This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among patients with diabetes mellitus attending the diabetes mellitus clinic of Adama Referral Hospital. Every other patient was selected and data regarding their medication adherence was collected using a structured interview. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS-16.Result.The response rate from this study was 98.3%. A total of 270 patients were interviewed; 51.5% were males. A total of 68.1% of the patients included in the study were married. 14% were younger than 40 years, and 50% were between 40 and 60 years. 21.8% of the participants ascribed their nonadherence to forgetting to take their medications. Patients with duration of diabetes≤5 years (82.07%) were more compliant to their medication than those with>5 years (60.8%), which was found to be statistically significant(P=0.003). Insulin, 47%, and glibenclamide plus metformin, 43.7%, were the most commonly prescribed mono- and combination therapies, respectively. Common comorbid conditions include hypertension, 148 (54.82%), and visual impairment, 89 (32.96%). The proportion of male patients adherent to their antidiabetic medications was found to be lower than 69.78% compared to the female patients (74.81%), but the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).Conclusion.Most diabetic patients are currently being managed with the most effective available drugs. However the result from this study indicates that the desired blood sugar level could not be controlled and maintained adequately. This was because of poor adherence to the prescribed drug regimen and poor knowledge and practice of successful self-management.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the access to drugs for hypertension and diabetes and the direct cost of buying them among users of the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. METHODS: Population-based, cross-sectional study of a systematic random sample of 785 patients with hypertension and 823 patients with diabetes mellitus who were registered in 208 randomly selected FHS teams in 35 municipalities of the state of Pernambuco. The selected municipalities were classified into three levels with probability proportional to municipality size (LS, large-sized; MS, medium-sized; SS, small-sized). To verify differences between the cities, we used the χ2 test. RESULTS: Pharmacological treatment was used by 91.2% patients with hypertension whereas 85.6% patients with diabetes mellitus used oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs), and 15.4% used insulin. The FHS team itself provided antihypertensive medications to 69.0% patients with hypertension, OADs to 75.0% patients with diabetes mellitus, and insulin treatment to 65.4%. The 36.9% patients with hypertension and 29.8% with diabetes mellitus that had to buy all or part of their medications reported median monthly cost of R$ 18.30, R$ 14.00, and R$ 27.61 for antihypertensive drugs, OADs, and insulin, respectively. CONCLUSION: It is necessary to increase efforts to ensure access to these drugs in the primary health care network.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. It develops in nearly all individuals with type one diabetes and in more than 75% of individuals with type two who survive for over twenty years with the disease. Objective: To clarify the importance of early detection of DR, and specifically to determine its prevalence among type one diabetic patients. Methods: A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted on all registered type one diabetic patients attending Al-Shohada family health center (FHC); during the period from June to August 2015. The study included 105 patients with type one diabetes mellitus. They were subjected to a predesigned questionnaire, and their data were retrieved by checking their files. They were referred for fundus examination by an ophthalmologist. Results: The prevalence of DR among type one diabetic patients was 51.3%, and it was 62.8% among the patients who had never undergone fundus examination before. In 57% of the patients, the barrier for DR screening was negligence and lack of awareness about its importance. Prevalence of DR depends on the duration in addition to the degree diabetes control. Conclusion: Most of type one diabetic patients are aware of its complications; however, there is little awareness about the importance of screening for DR, which together with negligence constitutes the main barriers to its screening. Therefore, the family physician plays an important role in dealing with these problems for early detection and management of diabetic retinopathy.
