My name is Natasha Lepore and I am a 4th year student in the Honours Specialization in Medical Sciences program. I started volunteering at SARI Therapeutic Riding six years ago. I got involved with this organization because of my desire to make a difference in the community. SARI is a therapeutic horse riding centre whose mission is to improve the physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth with special needs. My experiences with SARI has complemented my understanding of various diseases and disabilities that I have learned about in university. However, SARI has also shown me the importance of approaching the treatment of certain diseases in a more holistic fashion. Specifically, my experiences at SARI have demonstrated that Hippotherapy is an effective approach to improving the quality of life of children with disabilities.

There is a growing body of literature exploring the general population’s use of social media for assistance in dealing with stigmatized health issues. This study presents novel research examining the relationship between social media use and young adults. It utilizes a therapeutic affordance (TA) framework. Quantitative results from this study are complemented by qualitative data. The relationships between distinct social media and their TA (a–b) are presented to highlight their potential to impact positively on social and emotional well-being outcomes. Evidence includes broad support for “connection,” “narration,” and “collaboration” TAs in this context and the relationship between the use of distinct social media and perceived quality of life (QOL) outcomes (a–c). TA provides an appropriate and valuable theoretical framework which is useful for the development of an evidence-base from the analysis of young adult’s social media usage. An analysis of the association between social media and their QOL outcomes is presented according to the TA relationship pathway (a–c–b). The adoption of a TA framework enables a nuanced analysis of significant associations between specific social media, TA, and improved QOL outcomes. This study demonstrates the significant association between social media and perceived QOL outcomes in young adults.

In connection with the increasing the number of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who enrolls in educational institutions of Ukraine, the issue of individualization of physical education (PE) of children with ASD in the school process becomes important. There is little data on the quality of life of schoolchildren with autism spectrum disorders. It does not allow to draw individual trajectories of physical education of such children, to help them to improve their adaptability. Most of studies have been performed on males. Objective: to analyze the level of cognitive, physical, emotional, social functioning and functioning in school of girls of primary school age with autism spectrum disorders and compare them with typically developed peers. It was found that there were no differences between the rates of girls with ASD and girls with typical development in walking and running, feeling of pain and low energy levels, the frequency of school absences due to doctor visits and the frequency of forgetting things. However, the level of development of cognitive, social and emotional functioning of girls with ASD is significantly lower than the indicators with typical development by all criteria. To overcome the problems with cognitive, social and emotional functioning of girls with ASD, it is recommended to select appropriate means of PE. In oder to improve the cognitive processes (attention, memory) of girls with ASD, we recommend to increase the amount of means that promote the development of coordination in PE classes; to improve physical functioning - exercises for developing muscle strength and endurance. The game activity with normal girls will help to improve the social well-being of girls with ASD. We should use oriental martial arts and oriental gymnastics to improve the psycho-emotional state of girls with ASD.

The objective of this systematic review was to examine the relationships between objectively and subjectively measured sleep duration and various health indicators in children and youth aged 5–17 years. Online databases were searched in January 2015 with no date or study design limits. Included studies were peer-reviewed and met the a priori-determined population (apparently healthy children and youth aged 5–17 years), intervention/exposure/comparator (various sleep durations), and outcome (adiposity, emotional regulation, cognition/academic achievement, quality of life/well-being, harms/injuries, and cardiometabolic biomarkers) criteria. Because of high levels of heterogeneity across studies, narrative syntheses were employed. A total of 141 articles (110 unique samples), including 592 215 unique participants from 40 different countries, met inclusion criteria. Overall, longer sleep duration was associated with lower adiposity indicators, better emotional regulation, better academic achievement, and better quality of life/well-being. The evidence was mixed and/or limited for the association between sleep duration and cognition, harms/injuries, and cardiometabolic biomarkers. The quality of evidence ranged from very low to high across study designs and health indicators. In conclusion, we confirmed previous investigations showing that shorter sleep duration is associated with adverse physical and mental health outcomes. However, the available evidence relies heavily on cross-sectional studies using self-reported sleep. To better inform contemporary sleep recommendations, there is a need for sleep restriction/extension interventions that examine the changes in different outcome measures against various amounts of objectively measured sleep to have a better sense of dose–response relationships.

Family–professional partnerships are a key support for families of children with disabilities, but little is known about families of children with deaf-blindness. This study examined (a) the factor structures of the Beach Center on Disability Family–Professional Partnership and Family Quality of Life (FQOL) Scales utilizing a national sample of families of children and youth with deaf-blindness (age birth to 22 years), and (b) the relationship between family–professional partnership and FQOL at the subdomain levels. Results suggested a two-factor solution for family–professional partnership (Enhancing Connection and Enhancing Capacity) and a three-factor solution for FQOL (Family Interaction/Parenting Well-being, Social/Emotional Well-being, Physical/Material Well-being). Enhancing Capacity Partnership moderated the relationship between Enhancing Connection Partnership and Family Interaction/Parenting Well-being FQOL. The significance of these findings in light of the existing family–professional partnership literature is discussed, and implications for research and practice are offered.

Background/Aim. As significant advances in cancer treatment have occurred over the decades, the crucial questions in oncology nowadays are not related only to the treatment of illness, but also to the quality of life (QOL) of patients. The goal of our study was to explore which set of determinants (clinical, functional, affective, or social) has the greatest impact on explaining QOL in women who live with diagnosis of breast cancer in Serbia. Methods. The research was conducted on 64 women (Mage=58.36, SD=11.30) while undergoing radiation therapy at Oncology institute of Vojvodina. QOL-BC was used as a measure of physical, psychological, social, spiritual and general well-being, UEFI was applied for the assessment of the upper extremity function, DASS-21 was used for measuring symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, MOS-SSS served as a measure of social support, while demographic and clinical data were also collected. Results. ANOVA with repeated measures, F(2.03, 127.80 )=20.24, p<.001, showed that in our sample, physical QOL was significantly better from all other domains, while social QOL was significantly lower from both physical and psychological aspect. A hierarchical regression analysis, F(8, 55)=7.16, p<.001, R2=.51, showed that patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy, who experienced high levels of stress and poor social support, tend to have diminished general QOL. Intoduction of affective-related variables, ?R2=.16, p(?F)<.01, and social support, ?R2=.05, p(?F)<.05, led to a significant increase in proportion of explained variance over and above clinical and functional variables. Conclusion. Our results indicate that psychological and social resources are more important in predicting QOL, compared to clinical and funcitonal factors. At the same time, social, psychological and spiritual well-being of patients is significantly worse compared to physical QOL, meaning that there is still much left to be done regarding the progress from a purely somatic to a holistic approach in treatment of breast cancer.

As health practitioners, having a holistic approach to patients is critical. Patients are a complex interplay of physical, emotional, and social well-being. Limiting treatments to only some of these domains will inevitably yield suboptimal health and reduced quality of life. Thus, it is imperative that we advocate for acne-prone individuals so that they can receive the well-rounded care they deserve.
