Phosphonitrilic Fluoroelastomers—A New Class of Solvent Resistant Polymers with Exceptional Flexibility at Low Temperature

Abstract Many commercial elastomers exhibit good solvent resistance and high temperature stability but have limited use at low temperature. Fluorosilicone, which exhibits good low temperature properties, is limited in many dynamic applications by its poor physical strength. Phosphonitrilic fluoroelastomers are being developed for applications which require solvent resistance, low temperature flexibility, and good physical strength over a broad range of service conditions. A brief description of the synthesis and characterization of these new polymers has been presented in the forms of chemical, chromatographical, spectroscopical, physical testing, and rheological studies. The main object of this paper has been to provide an introduction to the art of processing, vulcanization, and reinforcement of these elastomers to produce useful commercial items. These fluoroelastomers can be processed on conventional equipment for dry-mixing rubber. Vulcanization can be effected with either organic peroxides or sulfur-accelerator cure systems. These vulcanizates can be reinforced with silicas, carbon blacks, or silane-treated clays to give stocks with a wide range of modulus, strength, hardness, and service temperatures (−80 to 400° F) in many service fluids and atmospheres. The exceptional solvent resistance, low temperature flexibility, and wide temperature service range indicate that phosphonitrilic fluoroelastomers should find use in items such as O-rings, Arctic fuel hose, lip seals, gaskets, and vibration damping services.

Cold recycled mixes using asphalt emulsion (CRME) is an economical and environmentally-friendly technology for asphalt pavement maintenance and rehabilitation. In order to determine the optimum range of cement contents, the complex interaction between cement and asphalt emulsion and the effects of cement on performance of CRME were investigated with different contents of cement. The microstructure and chemical composition of the fracture surface of CRME with different contents of cement were analyzed in this paper as well. Results show that the high-temperature stability and moisture susceptibility of CRME increased with the contents of cement increasing. The low-temperature crack resistance ability gradually increased when the content of cement is increased from 0% to 1.5%. However, it gradually decreased when the content of cement is increased from 1.5% to 4%. Cold recycled mixes had better low-temperature cracking resistance when the contents of cement were in the range from 1% to 2%. The results of microstructure and energy spectrum analysis show that the composite structure is formed by hydration products and asphalt emulsion. The study will be significant to better know the effects of cement and promote the development of CRME.

Additives on low temperature compaction and performances of compacted mixtures, the author devised low temperature environment compaction test, and then, comparison tests of volume parameters, high temperature stability, low temperature crack resistance and water sensitivity were conducted. Tests results showed that the wax additives and the surface-active additive can significantly contribute to mixtures low-temperature compactibility. The wax additive helps to improve high temperature stability obviously, and has no significant contribution to low temperature crack resistance and water sensitivity. The surface-active additive directly reduces water sensitivity, the wax additive indirectly plays the role of reducing water sensitivity by increasing the density of mixture, and the foam additive has no obvious effect on the water sensitivity.

Abstract For very large structures and parts in critical environments, a materials solution often cannot be found by using one material. The specific desired properties for those structures, like stiffness, ductility, high temperature stability, corrosion resistance, etc. are difficult to fulfill with only one material. In this case a solution may be found by using coatings and design their specific properties to replenish each other by their combination. The Thermal Spraying processes offer the necessary flexibility of producing thin to thick, ductile, soft to hard coatings while due to the wide range of process temperatures it is possible to process a wide range of materials, both as coating and structure. In this paper the some recent and important developments in Thermal Spraying to produce coatings for technical demanding structures will be described. These developments consist of High Power Plasma Spraying, powder- and process control development. To ensure process consistency during long spraying times and to apply reproducible coating quality a suitable process control is of great importance and the development of temperature control by Pyrometry and Thermography will be presented. The example will be drawn according to the application of a coating on a ball valve for off-shore and ship diesel engine parts (piston and valve).

Wafer thinning has been effectively used to improve heat dissipation in power devices and to fabricate flexible substrates, small chip packages, and multiple chips in a package. Wafer handling has become an important issue due to the tendency of thinned wafers to warp and fold. Thinned wafers need to be supported during the backgrinding process, lithography, deposition, etc. Temporary wafer bonding using removable adhesives provides a feasible route to wafer thinning. Existing adhesives meet only a partial list of performance requirements. They do not meet the requirements of high-temperature stability combined with ease of removal. This paper reports on the development of a wide range of temporary adhesives to be used in wafer thinning applications that use both novel and conventional bonding and debonding methods. We have developed a series of novel removable high-temperature spin-on adhesives with excellent bonding properties and a wide range of operating temperatures for bonding and/or debonding to achieve a better processing window.

Fiber asphalt concrete has been more and more widely used in highway construction. For analyzing high and low temperature performance of fiber asphalt mixture, rheological properties of fiber asphalt mortar were studied through indoor test. Impact of Rheological properties of the fiber asphalt mortar on high temperature and low temperature properties of asphalt mixture was analyzed. Results showed that the larger fiber content was, the better performance of asphalt mixture's high temperature stability, fiber asphalt mortar rut factor and rutting tests results of asphalt mixture were linear correlation, reflecting the high temperature performance of asphalt mixture; With the increase of fiber content, variation of stiffness modulus, creep rate indicators and mixture low temperature performance was consistent, and rheological properties of fiber asphalt mortar could characterize low temperature performance of asphalt mixture.

Adding sulphur dilution asphalt modifier SEAM to asphalt mixture is not only a modifier of asphalt mixture, but also an additive of asphalt mixture. When the modifier is added into the asphalt mixture, the road performance of the asphalt mixture can be improved. This paper studies SEAM modified asphalt mixture the Marshall property index, temperature stability, Water stability and fatigue feature in the Laboratory. On the based of the result of the experiment and analysis, SEAM can improve the high temperature stability, Water stability and fatigue feature. But the low temperature stability can’t improve.

Hexaaluminate catalysts offer excellent high-temperature stability compared to the equivalent metal-based catalysts. Their stability also lends well to use as a catalyst support. However, use of novel hexaaluminates is limited in fuel processing for fuel-cell applications. In this paper, we report on the performance of hexaaluminates as a catalyst support in the steam reforming of methane. The hexaaluminates are synthesized by a metal-exchange process using alumoxane precursors that enable a wide range of metal substitutions. Performance is evaluated using a unique stagnation-flow reactor that enables detailed probing of the boundary layer above the catalyst-impregnated stagnation surface. Experimental results are compared with models to understand fundamental reaction kinetics and optimize catalyst performance. RhSr-substituted hexaaluminates with a Rh impregnation are shown to yield the best performance. Scanning- and Transmission-Electron Microscopy are used to characterize the different types of hexaaluminates, and to examine the effect of aging on catalyst structure.

This paper used one kind of organic additive LEADCAP to reduce the compacting temperature of SBS WMA mixture, and compared the WMA mixture compacted by superpave gyratory compactor (SGC) with HMA mixture to determine the compacting temperature of WMA mixture. Rutting test, low temperature bending test, freeze-thaw indirect tension test, Hamburg Wheel-Track test and dynamic modulus were carried out to evaluate the road performance of WMA mixed with LEASCAP. The test result showed that the WMA mixed with LEADCAP had well performed high temperature stability, low temperature stability, water stability, rutting cracking resistance, and high dynamic modulus, the compacting temperature were 127 °C, and affectively reduced the compacting temperature of SBS WMA mixture.

Natural mineral fiber with good performances of mechanical properties and environmentally friendly, pollution-free especially have gradually aroused extensive concern. In order to improve the quality of asphalt pavement, explore the applicability of nature basalt fiber in enhanced asphalt mixture performance, this paper investigates two typical asphalt mixtures and contrastive studies pavement performance of asphalt mixture by high temperature stability, water stability, low temperature anti-cracking and fatigue performance between basalt fiber modified asphalt mixture and base asphalt mixture, and then study the basic principle of fiber reinforcing asphalt mixture. The research show that basalt fiber modified asphalt mixture has a better pavement performance than base asphalt mixture, its dynamic stability is 1.6 times than base asphalt mixture, low temperature anti-cracking performance increased by more 25% and fatigue life is more 2 times than base asphalt mixture. And the basalt fiber can be used in the road engineering as an additive material that enhances the comprehensive performance of asphalt pavement.
