Phytochemical and Pharmacological Evaluation of Alternanthera pungens

The aim of the present study was to evaluate pharmacognostical and antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory activity of ethanolic leaf extracts of Alternanthera pungens. The collected plants were washed, dried, cut and ground into coarse powder and macerated with ethanol and extract was dried by rotary vacuum. Phytochemical screening of ethanol extract revealed the presence of steroids, flavonoids, saponins, glycoside, phenols, and proteins. However, alkaloids and glycosides were absence in this species. The ethanolic extract of whole plant of A. pungens was subjected to column chromatography to separate pure compounds. Invitro antioxidant activity was performed by 2, 2 -diphenyl- 1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, hydroxy radical scavenging method and superoxide radical scavenging activity. The ethanolic extract of A. pungens was evaluated against antimicrobial activity against two fungal and four bacterial strains. The extracts showed remarkable inhibition of zone of bacterial and results were comparable with that of standard drugs against the organism tested.

This paper presents a comparative study about the evaluation of antioxidant activity and corrosion inhibition in Kenitra, Marrakesh and Taiz. An interesting topic, indeed polyphenols can improve or help to reduce oxidative stress in the treatment of digestive problems, weight management difficulties, diabetes, hypertension, arteriosclerosis and damage fatty tissue. Therefore, the authors deal with the measurement of polyphenol content and evaluation of the antioxidant activity of lemon peels in Kenitra , Marrakesh and Taiz.The authors performs empirical analyzes on lemon peels. The total polyphenol contents of the ethanolic extract of lemon peels were measured. It was to be 30. 23, 26. 346 and 20.961 mg/CE/g in Kenitra, Marrakech, and Taiz, respectively. Moreover, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of ethanolic extract of dried lemon peels was higher than 200μg/ml concentration. They were 73.47%, 47.36%, and 32.09in Kenitra, Marrakech, and Taiz, respectively. Also, the IC50 values of ethanolic extracts calculated from the percentage inhibitions at the same concentration. Inhibition (IC50) which obtained in Kenitra was 123.089 μg/ml. It was lower compared to the ethanol extract of Marrakech and Taiz that were 197.418, 276.750μg/mL, respectively. Therefore, the extract which is containing a high amount of phenolic is showed high radical scavenging activity. In addition, the maximum inhibition efficiencies for 2 mL L-1 of the inhibitor at 298 k were 98, 12% and 84, 85 % in Kenitra and Taiz, respectively. These values obtained through polarization curve measurements.

In Vietnam, Selaginella tamariscina (Beauv.) Spring. has been used as a traditional medicine for osteoarthritis, haemorrhage, hepatitis, burn, … However, Selaginella tamariscina is less studied than in other countries. Therefore, this research focuses on study some bioactivities (such as antioxidative, antibacterial activities, and inhibition of albumin denaturation) and preliminary phytochemical screening of six extracts (ethanol extracts of root, leaf, whole plant, petroleum extracts of root, leaf, whole plant) of S. tamariscina collect from Co Thach, Binh Thuan Province. The preliminary phytochemical screening results show that Selaginella tamariscina extracts have most of secondary metabolite groups such as phenolics, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, and lactone. The antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract of root is higher than that of other extracts. Moreover, the ethanol extract of root also has the highest reducing ability and free radical scavenging activity, with EC50 = 1.590 ± 0.091mg/ml. In the anti-denaturation of albumin test, the petroleum ether extract of whole plant has the lowest IC50 at 99 ± 5μg/ml.

This study was designed to examine the in vitro antioxidant DPPH free radical-scavenging activity, and the total phenolic and flavonoid content of ethanol and methanol extracts of Salvia amplexicaulis Lam. in the whole plant and different parts, leaves, stems and flowers. The largest amounts of extract yield were obtained from the flowers, 14.14% and 12.00 % (w/w) in the ethanol of methanol extracts, respectively. The ethanol extract of leaves (16.07 ?g/ml) and methanol extract of the whole plant (21.28 ?g/ml) showed the highest activity against the DPPH radical. The ethanol extract of the leaves was the richest in phenols (222.40 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (49.81 mg QE/g), whereas the methanol extract of the whole plant contained the highest amount of phenolics (180.89 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (38.15 mg QE/g). A very strong linear correlation between antioxidant activity and the phenolic content of the extracts was established. The obtained results suggest that S. amplexicaulis could be regarded as an important source of natural antioxidants.

An integral part of nature is herbal plants which contain natural substance essential to promote health. The focal point of this research resides on the phytochemical, antioxidant and antibacterial investigations of Rhus leptoditya leaves. Hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, acetone, and methanol solvent extracts were tested for their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Phytochemical analysis of R. leptodictya extracts revealed the presence of phenols, tannins, saponins, and flavonoids. Acetone extract with total flavonoid contents of 18.22 ± 2.1 mg/g while methanol extract with phenol contents (0.38 ± 0.002 mg/g) exhibited the highest amount amongst the studied extracts in the preliminary phytochemicals screening. The antioxidant activity of the plant extracts was evaluated using TLC based standard qualitative 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The methanol and acetone extracts showed maximum antioxidant bands compared to other selected solvents and promising radical scavenging activity at par with the standard antioxidant ascorbic acid (IC50 = 0.125 ± 0.013 mg/ml). The bioautography assay also demonstrated the bacterial growth inhibition of active compounds present in leave extracts. Acetone and ethyl acetate fractions showed the highest number of antibacterial active compounds against S. aureus. Minimum inhibitory concentration of the extracts examined using microplates of 96 wells containing Muller-Hinton methods against some bacterial strains, revealed methanol and acetone fractions with the lowest MIC value of 0.04 mg/ml against S. pneumoniae, while methanol extract possesses 0.008 mg/ml against S. aureus and B. subtilis. Results from this study project the R. leptodictya leave extracts constituents as health supplements that could be useful in food industries and in the treatment of various infectious diseases.

Aim: The present study is carried out to explore the preliminary phytochemical screening and free radical scavenging activity of the whole plant Drosera indica L. Methods: a) Phytochemical screening – The qualitative analysis of secondary metabolites is carried out by the standard qualitative methods. b) In vitro free radical scavenging activity of the ethanolic and aqueous extract of the whole plant Drosera indica L is used for the analysis .Various concentrations (100 – 500mcg/ml) of the ethanol and aqueous extracts of Drosera indica L. are used in the various antioxidant assay methods such as reducing power, ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP), nitric oxide (NO) radical,2,2’ azinobis-3 ethylbenzothiozoline-6 sulfonic acid (ABTS+) radical, hydroxyl radical (OH.), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydroxyl (DPPH) radical , super oxide radical and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is carried out with the standard protocols. In all the assays ascorbic acid is used as the standard antioxidant. Results: Phytochemical screening of the plants reveal the presence of numerous chemicals including flavanoids, tannins, polyphenols, cardiac glycosides and saponins. The ethanolic extract of Drosera indica L. shows better ability to scavenge ,1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydroxyl( DPPH)radical, hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide radical and superoxide radical. FRAP and the reducing power abilities of the ethanolic extract is increased with the increase in concentration of the plant extract. Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of Drosera indica L. shows better ability to scavenge the free radicals than the aqueous extract. From this study, a conclusion is drawn that Drosera indica L. can have more beneficial effects with respect to the presence of many active secondary metabolites which may likely to combat with the oxidative stress diseases like diabetes, cancer, cardio-vascular diseases and in general boost the immune system.

Oxidative stress resulting from accumulation of reactive oxygen species has been associated with disease. The search for natural antioxidants of plant origin is necessitated by the side effects associated with synthetic antioxidants currently available. The objective of the study was to determine the antioxidant activity of Combretum zeyheri, Combretum platypetalum, and Parinari curatellifolia extracts by determining nitrite radical scavenging ability. The nitrite radical scavenging assay was used to evaluate the antioxidant potential of the extracts. The total flavonoid content of P. curatellifolia methanol extract was determined by the aluminium calorimetric method. The aqueous and ethanolic leaf extracts of C. zeyheri, C. platypetalum, and P. curatellifolia extracts exhibited nitrite radical scavenging activity. The results show the scavenging activity in the order of potency: P. curatellifolia > C. platypetalum > C. zeyheri with concentration values of 103 µg/mL, 158 µg/mL, and 188 µg/mL for the ethanol extracts and 92.5 µg/mL, 97.5 µg/mL, and 198 µg/mL for the water extracts, respectively. P. curatellifolia ethanol extract was the most potent and the total flavonoid content was estimated to be 0.4 ± 0.05 mg/g quercetin and could account for the activity. Thus, our findings provide evidence that C. zeyheri, C. platypetalum, and P. curatellifolia leaf extracts could be potential sources of natural antioxidants.

Background: Curcuma longa Linn. (Zingiberaceae family) plant or turmeric is known to possess pharmacological properties at relatively nontoxic doses. The study was carried out with the aim to evaluate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of C. longa L.Methods: Ethanolic rhizome extract was applied against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi using disc and well diffusion methods. Antioxidant of C. longa L. was determined by measuring 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity.Results: The ethanolic extract of rhizomes showed inhibitory activity against Gram-positive S. aureus bacteria, whereas the Gram-negative S. typhi bacteria were resistant toward the ethanol extract. Zone of inhibitions against S. aureus were 7 mm and 11 mm by disc and well method, respectively. For antioxidant activity, DPPH radical scavenging activity of ethanolic extract of C. longa L. was set against butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). It was shown that the value of half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of rhizome extract was higher than standard control. The dose response curve was utilized to determine the half maximal IC50 value for each sample. The IC50 of rhizome extract is 21.25 µg/ml, while the value IC50 for BHT is 12.42 µg/ml.Conclusions: The finding suggested turmeric rhizome-extract as a good candidate in the search for a natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agent.

In this paper, Epilobium angustifolium L. in Turkey was investigated for total phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanin amounts. Furthermore, the ethanol extract of the leafs was evaluated for antioxidant activities as ABTS, hydroxyl radical scavenging, superoxide radical scavenging, power of reduction, and bleaching of beta-carotene. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents of the ethanolic extract were found to be 468,11± 1,53 micrograms of pyrocatechol per milligram of the extract and 103,05 ± 2,36 µg catechin per milligram of the extract, respectively. As the extract concentration increased, the amount of anthocyanins showed a decrease (17.92±8.08 and 13.56±8.22 for the 1 mg/mL and 2 mg/mL concentrations, respectively). In the β-carotene bleaching test, higher activity was observed than BHA ( 1.540±0.053 and 1, respectively). The results of the reduction power, hydroxyl radical scavenging, and ABTS tests gave either very close values or higher than the standards chosen. Superoxide radical scavenging activity gave a lower value than the Trolox selected as standard. Antioxidant activity of ethanol extract was found to be 94.22±0.05958 (ABTS), 78.77±0.84099 (hydroxyl radical scavenging) and 47.86±0.03915 (superoxide radical scavenging). The experimental data indicate that Turkey Epilobium angustifolium L. ethanol extract can be used pharmacologically.

Schisandra chinensis Fructus (SCF), a well-known traditional medicinal material, is a rich source of dibenzocyclooctene type lignans and polyphenols, which are important ingredients in SCF and show various activities. SCF also contains about 18% organic acids, mainly citric acid, which makes the fruit and extract taste extremely sour and limited its application in beverages or food industries. In the present study, a chemical deacidification method was applied to defatted and non-defatted ethanol extract of SCF, and the effects on organic acid, lignans, and phenolic compounds were evaluated. Free radical scavenging activity and acute toxicity in mice before and after deacidification were also compared. Our results demonstrated that chemical deacidification significantly decreased the contents of organic acid and lignan compounds and markedly improves the safety of the ethanol extract of SCF, which will facilitate the comprehensive utilization of SCF extract in food and beverage industries.
