Background: Over the past decade, there has been a growing interest in sea bivalves, which are an inexpensive and easily accessible source of high-quality proteins, lipids and secondary metabolites with antimicrobial and anti-fungal potential. Farmed Black Sea mussel (M. galloprovincialis) are promising objects for the study of their antimicrobial potential. Purpose: The aim of this work is to determine the antibacterial activity of different extracts from the Black Sea mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis tissues by using the disc diffusion method with cultures of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Material/Methods: Extraction of mussel tissues was done with different solvents: ethyl acetate (100%), methanol (100%), glycerol:water (50%, 1:1 v/v), ethanol (50%), acetone (70%), hot water. Antimicrobial activities of these extracts from Mytilus galloprovincialis was assessed by the disc-diffusion method. Results: Testing antibacterial activity of black mussels revealed that ethyl acetate extract showed the highest activity against Еscherichia coli (13 mm) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (11 mm) and no activity against Staphilococcus aureus. The glycerol: water extract showed growth inhibition effect against Staphylococcus aureus (11 mm) and Escherichia coli (10 mm), but no effect against Klebsiella pneumoniae. Conclusions: The preliminary information presented in this study showed that the Black Sea farmed mussel could be an interesting source of antibacterial compounds. The glycerol-water extracts of Mytilus galloprovincialis had low antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus and more important against Escherichia coli.

Human pathogenic microorganisms have developed resistance in response to indiscriminative use of commercial drugs. Plants produce many secondary metabolites with microbiocidal activity hence their use in traditional medicine. Herbalists in Kenya use medicinal plants including Solanum incanum in treating microbial infections. Though S. incanum has been used to treat different diseases in humans and animals, there is little information on antimicrobial activities of its extracts against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In this study, phytochemical analysis and antibacterial activity of solanum incanum leaves, roots and seeds extracts were determined. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts of leaf, root and seed of concentrations 25, 50, 75 and 100, and amoxicillin 25 mg/ml (control) with three replications were used for antibacterial analysis by the agar-well diffusion method. The results were subjected to analysis of variance at P < 0.05. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, steroids and tannins. Solanum incanum exhibited significant antibacterial effect against the two test bacteria. Ethanol extracts were more active than extracts against the bacteria. Ethanol extracts at 100% inhibited growth of Staphylococcus aureus more than the Escherichia coli. The zones of inhibition for Staphylococcus aureus were 35.0±0.6 mm, 30.94±0.3 mm and 30.14±0.64mm for seed, root and leaves respectively. On the other hand, the zones of inhibition for Escherichia coliat 100% ethanol were 27.20±0.06, 23.14±0.12 and 21.0±0.4 seed, root and leaves respectively. The results validate the use of these plants in ethnomedicine and potential of this plant in treating infections caused by the two bacteria.

An exploratory study based on laboratory experiment was carried out to determine the antibacterial effect of Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) extract of Aloe vera leaf gel (DAE) against standard strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae in the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics in collaboration with the Department of Microbiology, Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. DMSO extract was used in five different concentrations (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 μg/ml). Dose dependent inhibitory effect was seen against the test organisms using disc diffusion method. Zone of inhibition (ZOI) were 8 mm, 13 mm, 15 mm, 16 mm and 21 mm against S. aureus; 0 mm, 8 mm, 13 mm, 15 mm and 18 mm against P. aeruginosa; 8 mm, 11 mm, 13 mm, 16 mm and 20 mm against E. coli; 0 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 14 mm and 18 mm against K. pneumoniae at 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 μg/ml respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was assessed by broth dilution technique. The MICs of DAE for S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. coli and K. pneumoniae were 300 μg/ml, 400 μg/ml, 400 μg/ml and 450 μg/ml respectively. From the study it was observed that DMSO extract of Aloe vera leaf gel possesses antibacterial effect against the test pathogens. The findings highlight the need for further extensive study to detect and isolate the biologically active ingredients present in the Aloe vera leaves which are responsible for antibacterial effect. Hopefully, that would lead to the discovery of new and more potent antimicrobial agents originated from Aloe vera. Mediscope Vol. 7, No. 2: July 2020, Page 67-74

Erbium(III) complexes of 2-hydroxy-l,4-naphthalenedione-1-oxime and its C-3 substituted derivatives are synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthalenedione-1-oxime derivatives are analysed using H1 and C13 NMR spectroscopy. The molecular composition of the synthesized complexes is found to be [ML3(H2O)2]. The antimicrobial activity of these complexes is determined by well diffusion method against the target microorganisms- Staphylococcus aureus, Xanthomonas campestris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. The antimicrobial activities of 2- hydroxy-1,4-naphthalenedione-1-oximes and their complexes are compared. It is observed that 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthalenedione-l-oximes exhibit higher antifungal activity as compared to antibacterial activity. These activities are reduced upon complexation of these oximes with Erbium.

This study aimed to determine the effect of concentration ethanol extract from tembelakan leaf (Lantana camara Linn)  on bacteria growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Extraction was done by maceration using ethanol 96% and then separated using rotary evaporator. Antibacterial activity test of the ethanol extract by Well agar diffusion method. Variation in crude extract saponin used in this study was 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and positive controls were used for comparison with Amoxicilin and Chloramphenicole concentration of 25 µg/mL and DMSO as a negative control. The results of antibacterial activity test is indicated by the formation of growth inhibitory region S. aureus and E. coli. The result of growth inhibitory regions was analyzed by One way ANOVA. One way ANOVA test results indicate that there are effects of ethanol extract concentration of tembelekan leaf (L. camara Linn) against S. aureus and E. coli. Effective concentration of ethanol extract tembelekan leaf (L. camara Linn) when compared with positive control to inhibit the growth of S. aureus and E. coli is at 25% with a relatively strong antibacterial activity. Test with phytochemicals screening method which is showed that tembelekan leaf contains the flavanoid, saponins, and tannins compounds as antibacterial

Wound infections have become life threatening as a result of treatment failures caused by multi-drug resistant pathogens. The search for newer compounds potent against antibiotic resistant bacteria associated with wounds is crucial. Hence this study investigated the application of antibacterial photodynamic therapy using meso tetra-(4-phenyl) porphyrin (TPP), metallated with zinc, tin and silver (ZnTPP, SnTPP and AgTPP), meso tetra-(4-sulphonatephenyl) porphyrin (TPPS) and the corresponding metallo meso tetra-(4-sulphonatephenyl) porphyrin (MTPPS) as photosensitizers. The in-vitro toxicity and photo-toxicity properties on four chronic wound colonizing multi-drug resistant bacterial strains: Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella sp., Proteus sp., and Escherichia coli were assessed using agar well diffusion method. Photo-toxicity of the compounds was investigated using 100 Watt tungsten lamp. Inhibitory activity of porphyrins tested against these bacterial strains showed Staphylococcus aureus to have both lowest (11±0.0 mm) and highest (33±1.1 mm) susceptibility to SnTPPS and ZnTPPS respectively. The sequence of data also showed appreciable improvement in the antimicrobial activities of five metalloporphyrins (SnTPP, AgTPP, ZnTPPS, SnTPPS and AgTPPS) exposed to light rays than when tested against bacterial strains in dark condition. ZnTPPS exhibited the best activity with improved photo-toxic activities against all bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus 33±1.1 mm, Klebsiella sp. 32±0.7 mm, Proteus sp. 28±0.7 mm and Escherichia coli 30±1.4 mm) examined in this study.
