Human pathogenic microorganisms have developed resistance in response to indiscriminative use of commercial drugs. Plants produce many secondary metabolites with microbiocidal activity hence their use in traditional medicine. Herbalists in Kenya use medicinal plants including Solanum incanum in treating microbial infections. Though S. incanum has been used to treat different diseases in humans and animals, there is little information on antimicrobial activities of its extracts against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In this study, phytochemical analysis and antibacterial activity of solanum incanum leaves, roots and seeds extracts were determined. Ethanolic and aqueous extracts of leaf, root and seed of concentrations 25, 50, 75 and 100, and amoxicillin 25 mg/ml (control) with three replications were used for antibacterial analysis by the agar-well diffusion method. The results were subjected to analysis of variance at P < 0.05. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, steroids and tannins. Solanum incanum exhibited significant antibacterial effect against the two test bacteria. Ethanol extracts were more active than extracts against the bacteria. Ethanol extracts at 100% inhibited growth of Staphylococcus aureus more than the Escherichia coli. The zones of inhibition for Staphylococcus aureus were 35.0±0.6 mm, 30.94±0.3 mm and 30.14±0.64mm for seed, root and leaves respectively.On the other hand, the zones of inhibition for Escherichia coliat 100% ethanol were 27.20±0.06, 23.14±0.12 and 21.0±0.4 seed, root and leaves respectively.The results validate the use of these plants in ethnomedicine and potential of this plant in treating infections caused by the two bacteria.

Antirrhinum Orontium is belonging to the family Plantaginacea commonly known as lesser snapdragon which is a flowering plant belong to genus Antirrhinum. It was traditionally used in treatment of Tumor, Eye inflammation and Ulcer. Antirrhinum Orontium is contain mostly tertiary alkaloids bases one of them is identified as 4-methyl-2, 6-naphthyridine and Choline is identified as quaternary base. The recent study is to investigate the antibacterial activity of Ethyl acetate, Dichloromethane, Hexane and Water extracts of Antirrhinum Orontium, against the pathogen like Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Both the Soxhlet and Maceration water extract were found most active from the other extract against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus by using agar well diffusion method. The measured zone of inhibition for Soxhlet water extract is 21±0.05mm and Maceration water extract is 20±0.05mm against gram positive Staphylococcus aureus, while for gram negative Escherichia coli 23±0.05mm is measured for Soxlet and 21±0.05mm measured for Maceration water extracts

ABSTRACT  Akway (Drimys piperita) is a woody, evergreen and aromatic plant that belongs to family winteraceae. This plant is used by Sougb tribe lived in Sururey village, District of Anggi, to enhance the vitality of body. The objectives of the research were to determine antimicrobial stability of akway bark extracts influenced by heating time of 100OC, levels of acidity (pH) and salt contents.. Antimicrobial assays were done by using agar well diffusion method against four species of bacteria, i.e.  Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Bacillus cereus ATCC10876, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923. The results showed that ethanolic extracts of akway bark only inhibited growth of B. cereus and S. aureus with minimum inhibitory concentration 0,99% and 0,89% . The levels of concentration and acidity of ethanol extracts  influenced the antimicrobial capacity of extracts.. Whereas heating time on 100OC during 25 minutes and salt contents  up to 5% of extract solution did not influence the antimicrobial stability of  akway bark extracts. Key words : akway, extracts, antimicrobe, pH, Heating, salt ABSTRAK Akway (Drimys piperita) adalah tumbuhan berkayu, aromatik dan hijau sepanjang tahun dan tergolong dalam suku winteraceae. Tumbuhan ini digunakan oleh Suku Sougb yang bermukim di desa Sururey Distrik Anggi, untuk mengobati malaria dan meningkatkan vitalitas tubuh. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan stabilitas antimikroba ekstrak kulit kayu akway pada waktu pemanasan ekstrak pada 100OC, tingkat keasaman (pH) dan kandungan garam. Pengujian antimikroba dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode difusi agar terhadap empat spesies bakteri yaitu Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Bacillus cereus ATCC10876, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etanol kulit kayu akway hanya dapat menghambat bakteri Bacillus cereus dan Staphylococcus aureus dengan konsentrasi hambat minimum masing-masing adalah 0,99% dan 0,89%. Tingkat konsentrasi dan keasaman (pH) mempengaruhi kapasitas antimikroba ekstrak etanol kulit kayu akway. Sedangkan perlakuan pemanasan pada suhu 100OC dengan lama pemanasan sampai dengan 25 menit dan penambahan garam NaCl sampai konsentrasi 5%  tidak berpengaruh pada stabilitas antimikroba ekstrak etanol kulit kayu akway.

In order to authenticate and ascertain the various claim by the rural dwellers that depend on chewing sticks for their oral hygiene and protection against innumerable diseases, the antibacterial activity of the roots of Fagara zanthoxyloides and Distemonanthus benthamianus were evaluated. Preliminary phytochemical screening was carried out using standard methods. In-vitro antibacterial activity of the methanol extracts of both plants was also carried out using the agar well diffusion method against standard strains of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Salmonella typhii ATCC 14028, Citrobacter freundii ATCC 8090 and also some clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis at different concentrations and ratios. Preliminary phytochemical screening showed that the extracts contained alkaloids, saponin, tannins, steroids, flavonoids, anthraquinones, cardiac glycosides and phenol. All the test microorganisms were susceptible to the inhibitory effect of the extracts at concentrations of 200 mg/ml and 500 mg/ml. F. zanthoxyloides had better antimicrobial activity with zones of inhibition ranging from 21.0 to 26.0 mm at 200 mg/ml and 24.3 to 29.3 mm at 500 mg/ml while D. benthamianus had zones of inhibition ranging from 17.7 to 26.7 mm at 200 mg/mL and 19.0 to 26.7 mm at 500 mg/mL. Some of the test microorganisms were resistant to the standard antibiotics (cefuroxime, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin and gentamicin). Combinations of the extracts in ratios 50:50 and 75:25 yielded no increase in activity. The MIC and MBC for D. benthamianus ranged from 6.25 mg/ml to 100 mg/mL and 25 to 200 mg/ml, respectively while that of F. zanthoxyloides ranged from 1.56 mg/ml to 12.5 mg/mL and 50 to 200 mg/ml, respectively. The antimicrobial activity demonstrated by F. zanthoxyloides and D. benthamianus indicates that they would be valuable in the management of urinary, respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts infections while at the same time helping to mitigate the problem of antimicrobial resistance. The aim of this research is to investigate the antibacterial activity and identify the phytochemical constituents of Mangifera indica leafs on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus using disc diffusion method. The sample was collected fresh from the premises of Bioresources Development Center (BIODEC), Katsina, Katsina State and was dried and pounded into powder. The powdered leaves were extracted using ethanol and aqueous solvents. Various concentrations ranging from 500mg to 62.5mg were prepared. Test isolates were obtained from the Microbiology laboratory, Umaru Musa Yar’adua University Katsina (UMYUK) and were further authenticated using Gram staining and biochemical test. The bacterial inoculums were standardized to McFarland scale 0.5. Zones of inhibition were read after 24 hours at 370C. The results of the antibacterial study revealed that the ethanolic leaves extracts at 500mg/ml had effect on P. aeruginosa and S. aureus with zones of inhibition of 12mm and 6mm respectively. The results of the phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids and phenols where only alkaloids was found to be absent in the aqueous extract. There is no significant difference between the solvents and various concentrations used base on t-test data analysis.

Bacteria of the genus Thermoactinomyces have the ability to produce antibacterial bioactive compounds. This bioactive compound can be used for combating diarrheal agents such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the metabolite extract from Thermoactinomyces sp. (H24) against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Methanol was used as a solvent for the extraction of bacterial bioactive compounds. Antibacterial activity was analyzed by the diffusion method with several extract concentrations (0.75 mL, 1.5 mL, 2.25 mL, and 3 mL), 10% DMSO as the negative control, and ciprofloxacin as the positive control. Our result shows that Termoactinomyces sp. (H24) extract has an inhibitory effect on the growth of  E. coli and S. aureus with an effective concentration of 2.25 mL (inhibition strength: very strong).

A study was conducted on the antibacterial activity test on n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extracts of ebony bark (Diospyros celebica Bakh.) using a diffusion method. The purpose of this research is to know the antibacterial activity of ebony bark against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria using n-hexane, ethyl acetate dan ethanol. The method of extraction used in this research was maceration method with three polarity levels of solvent. The antibacterial activity test was performed by diffusion-well test. The results showed that ethyl acetate extract gave the highest inhibition of 26.14 mm in gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) and ethanol extract of 25.97 mm in gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli). ABSTRACTLissoclinum badium is a type of ascidian that contains bioactive compounds. This study aims to determine of presence of antibacterial activity from extracts and fractions of Lissoclinum badium collected from Mantehage Island Manado against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Samples were extracted by maceration method using 95% ethanol solvent and fractionated using solvents of chloroform, n-hexane and methanol. Antibacterial activity was carried out by the disk diffusion agar method. The results showed that the ethanol extracts an methanol fraction had activity to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria with strong category. Meanwhile, against the Staphylococcus aureus the ethanol extracts, chloroform and n-hexane fractions had ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria with weak category.. Keywords: Antibacterial activity, Lissoclinum badium, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus.  ABSTRAKLissoclinum badium merupakan salah satu jenis tunikata yang memiliki kandungan senyawa bioaktif yang dapat digunakan untuk pengobatan berbagai penyakit. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui adanya aktivitas antibakteri dari ekstrak dan fraksi  Lissoclinum badium yang diperoleh dari Pulau Mantehage Manado terhadap Escherichia coli dan Staphylococcus aureus. Sampel diekstraksi dengan metode maserasi menggunakan pelarut etanol 95% dan fraksinasi menggunakan pelarut metanol, kloroform, dan n-heksan. Aktivitas antibakteri dilakukan dengan  metode difusi agar cakram kertas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etanol dan fraksi metanol memiliki aktivitas untuk menghambat bakteri Escherichia coli dan Staphylococcus aureus dengan daya hambat kuat. Sedangkan untuk fraksi kloroform dan fraksi n-heksan memiliki aktivitas untuk menghambat bakteri Staphylococcus aureus saja dengan daya hambat sedang. Kata kunci: Aktivitas antibakteri, Lissoclinum badium, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus.

Escherichia coli is one of the bacteria that cause infections in the human digestive tract such as diarrhea, while Staphylococcus aureus is one of the bacteria that cause infections in the skin injury such as boils and pimples. This study used Syzygium zeylanicum leaves because it has potential as a antibacterial because it contains active compounds. This study aimed was determine the antibacterial activity of the fraction and the active compound in Syzygium zeylanicum leaves against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Research conducted on November 2015 to January 2016. The method used in this research were extraction by maceration, fractionation by liquid fractionation, antibacterial activity test, and determination of minimum inhibitory concentration with the diffusion method and isolation of active compounds by column chromatography method. The bacteria used in this test are Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Data are presented in tabular form based on the average value of the inhibition diameter and deviation standard. The results of this research showed the water methanol active fraction against the bacteria that used in this test. The methanol water fraction had obtained one antibacterial compound in bottle 1,3,5 which shows the value of tannin Rf 0,416. The minimum inhibitory concentration of water methanol of water apple leaves is 1000 µg/mL for Escherichia coli and 500 µg/mL for  Staphylococcus aureus. The minimum  inhibitory concentration of the active  compound  to  Escherichia  coli  and  Staphylococcus  aureus  in  500  µg/mL.  The fraction and the active compound of water apple leaves have an antibacterial activity with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and the active compound is tannin.
